It all depends upon your pain threshold. BASCOM/AVR has got to be the easiest development systems for the AVR out there. Great hardware abstraction, good support (The update wizard is a bit testy though) and lots of users. But it is basic. If you want to move to C then Codevision

I can easily read data from usual PS2 Keyboards using ATmega16, But when I connect a PC Numpad KeyBoard(USB) using USB to PS2 iterface, I can't see any output scancode from keyboard.

Studio (assembler) and avr-gcc and WinAVR (gcc port to windows) are all free. Plugins are not needed. Studio has its own editor. WinAVR comes with something like Programmer's Notepad. Studio is in the 8-bit micros section of Atmel website. Google will find the others. Jim Wagner

To Clarify - Bidirectional RS232 requires at least 3 connections - Rx, Tx, and Common or Ground. If your cable has no ground wire, it could have worked through the JTAG ground. Removing JTAG would then cause the RS232 to fail. Check your cable with an ohm meter or continuity chec

It might be a good idea to give some info on what crystal frequency you're using, what values you've initiated the UART registers with, and the parameters of the UART you want to use (e.g. 9600 N 8 1, etc.) Do you have hyperterminal set up for the same parameters? Zack On Mon, 14
