Is Anybody Out There

Is Anybody Out There

2005-09-08 by Larry T.

Okay, this group has 1073 members but only owns a total of 133 Casio
Synths/Samplers?????

Whats up with that?

There is a poll, opened in NOVEMBER OF 2003 (!!) to see how many of
what the members of this list have. And while it may not list every
single possible Casio unit, it pretty much covers the bases.

Please, go to
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/surveys?id=1156573
and indicate which unit you own. If you have one that is not listed,
select the closes thing to it maybe?

Since many of us have more then one unit, we should get some
interesting numbers in this poll if everyone will just take 2 minutes
to open their browser and answer the poll.

We may be able to help each other better if we understand what the
distribution of equipment looks like. So please, vote (or oudate your
vote if have already voted) today!

Layering a DX7 + CZ1 = VZ1?

2005-09-08 by M.J.B.

I have a cz-1 and the loveable tx-416 (dx7 rack)

To layer these two together...give or take, do I
have basically the sound of the VZ line.

I love layering them together but I'm wondering
if the VZ would give me any *real* difference?

The VZ neither sounds like a CZ nor like a DX synthesizer, it's comparable with
the difference between subtractive synths...
Copared to the DX the VZ sounds less glassy and punchy but "richer" and rather
digital...

Btw. your question about the D50, I got the D-550 two days ago and it sounds
rather open and punchy compared MT32 and D110...

Hi Larry,

I hear Pink Floyd playing

Anyway, add FZ-10, FZ-20 and PG380 to the list

Maybe people who joined since then didnt know about the poll. Your
reminder should help.

Cheers,

Andrew

Re: Layering a DX7 + CZ1 = VZ1?

2005-09-09 by wadrad

I think we're shooting in the same direction, but where you stated
the VZ doesn't sound like a CZ or a DZ, I would say "yeah, they don't
sound exactly alike, but depending on the patches they can sound
pretty damn similar." There's a VERY similar digital quality on some
of the string patches on the VZ that sound very CZ-like to me (very
static), though some the electric piano patches on the VZ prompt more
of a DX comparison.

Good description on the DX sounds. Definitely the smoother quality
of sound (and "glassy") with DX-FM. I went nuts over the FM sound
(ironically) after hearing Eddie Jobson's "Theme of Secrets" recorded
with a Synclavier II.

Have an FS1R, DX200, CZ-1, and a VZ-10 and they all have different
strengths though I mostly use them in similar roles. My only advice
with the VZ-10 (and it's already been touched on in earlier posts) is
it's not the friendliest beast to program. Easier than a DX (without
software assistance), but still menu/button intensive. My investment
of time tweaking doesn't always yield the usable results I'm looking
for when I just want to make music.

Still, if you're a synth nut, it's a way-cool means of synthesis
that's fun to play with...

Re: [CZsynth] Re: Layering a DX7 + CZ1 = VZ1?

2005-09-10 by Wilson Zorn

Just for my 2 cents, I was a bit disappointed when I got a VZ and compared
it to the CZ's sound, although I do agree some patches are quite similar (I
didn't feel that way about the strings as much as the bells, IIRC).

As to FM, never been a great fan. I like it for particularly odd sounds and
as a layer for others and like anything I'll use it if it's in my hands, but
the sound never grabbed in much of any context. I did get a DX100 since the
price was right and I like having a variety of sounds so it fills a little
gap, but it has been rather rarely used.

I was once (1987?) taught to program a DX7, and I realised that it's very
mathematical. You sort of program how you want the sound to develop, as
opposed to substractive synthesis where you would have a basic sound and
then shape it with modifiers.

I have yet to get into CZ/VZ progamming, but the CZ just sounded naff to me,
however the VZ is excellent, and certainly on a par with DX sounds.

As for layering, I'm currently layering VZ piano sounds with pads on my
OB-12 - I find the VZ and a VA work very well together.
