Hi all, i encounter the above message when trying to load banks to my VZ10m. I followed the insructions in the Midiox Settings.pdf posted but still I got the same response. Is there a description available for that error message. I'm new to the group and just recently reanimated my VZ Thanks, Pete

Hi I'm new too and i recently aquired the vz10m and have gone through a lot of troubleshooting over the past couple of weeks. I use mac os x 10.8 running snoize and midi quest, but i was getting that same message a lot. I was almost going to give up until i randomly tried changing the midi input and output channel back to its default of 1. I have multiple midi machines and had it on channel 4. As soon as i changed it back, all my sysex dumping from both programs worked perfectly and i could even put the transmit speed back up to 100% on my programs. Hope this helps you or others. Its not really random; at least it shouldn't be. Based on my VZ-8M I made a little If-XXXX-Then-YYYY problems solved with the two main error messages I got. Let me see if I can find where I posted that. Steve --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "cain.project" <cain.project@...> wrote:

It looks like I first posted that in 2004 in reply to a issue phonophobie was having. I am posting the link to that entry point in the thread as it contains some relevant discussion (including an explanation of VZ sysex format): http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/message/2077 In 2005, phonophobie compiled the info from the thread and added some additional material related to editors, filename extensions, and MIDIOX. If interested, go to Files > VZ - Docs and look for the one called "sysex Infos (from archived messages). Hope this helps. Hi Pete, what is your MIDI interface, and do you have the possibility of trying another one? They aren't all made equal, and especially not where sysex is concerned. regards Bill --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "cain.project" <cain.project@...> wrote:

I agree with the USB interface deal... I use a Midisport 1x1 with Midi-Ox and Windows 7. I have a question about the size of your file??? Midi-Ox says 47,176 bytes. All of my VZ-10M sysex files are either 43,094 or 55,958 (with the 8 byte headers) depending on whether they have op-mem's or just voices. This makes me wonder if the file is corrupt. --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "twobeelandscape" <bill@...> wrote:

Hej Bill, I recently acquired a no-name usb midi interface to which I connected one half of the gear including the VZ. I will crawl under the desc to try out my primary interface ( a sonic core ) later and hope it will do the trick. thanks, Pete --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "twobeelandscape" <bill@...> wrote:

I had the same concern about the size of the file. This is what I had based on the VZ-8m: > 65661 = FULL [Voice + Op-Men + Total] > 65644 = VC+OP [Voice + Op-Mem] > 43094 = VOICE > 22672 = OPMEM > The VZ files posted in files are 55958 which I assume is the VZ-1/VZ-10M VC+OP size. So, like Fran, I am wondering about the size of the file you are trying to upload to the VZ. Out of curiosity, where is it from? If you have patches you want to save, se if you can download them using sysex. If that works, save them. What size are they? If they seem to have been saved correctly and/or you don't mind possibly losing them, you could try transmitting any of the banks done by Cliff and posted in the CZ/VZ/FZ files storage group. As for the capability of different usb/midi interfaces to handle sysex data, I have heard of that problem before--esp. with the single 1-in, 1-out low-cost cables. On that note, I discovered some info that >>might<< relate to it in an article for a software utility called TestMidi (http://earthvegaconnection.com/evc/products/miditest/index.html). (For advanced midi users, see sections on DirectMusic and Sysex and Technical Info.) Also, if you want to post the file, I'd be willing to give it a try with both midiox and sonar. One more thought: The VZ-8m has a memory protect setting. Does the VZ-10m have that, and if so is it off? Also, I looked at the files in the overflow group and found one there that matches the size of the file midiox reported to you (RC150-Wonder.syx). I will give that a try tomorrow. In the overflow group (with the VZ files), there are some banks with funny looking file sizes posted in 2005. At least two of them look like they were reposted in 2010 with what looks to be a proper file size and an -OK! added to the file name. For example: RC150-Wonder1.syx 47 KB fish2fish21227 May 30, 2005 RC150-Wonder1-OK!.syx 55 KB warau555 Nov 20, 2010 If by any chance you are using one of the odd size files, try the one that says -OK!. Thank you all for your valuable feedback. From all the files to chose from I actually chose one of the two corrupt files. I exchanged them with - as Steve correctly noted - with the 'OK!' files. Now I still encounter errors ( MIDI Buffer Overflow) but a subset of the voices can be loaded. It seems like the VZ is an exeptionally tricky device when it comes to MIDI. The files I'm trying out are from the Files area here in the group, as well as a dump file which I created from my synth. Which size does the buffer of the VZ10m have? Do I need to decrease the send buffer and increase the timeouts between the buffers in MIDIOx? --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "narfman96" <narfman96@...> wrote:

Hi Steve You are perfecly right, I used exactly these two files, which was One of the problems. Is there a technical problem with this group? I posted two answers last week, which never appeared. Pete --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, "steve_the_composer" <smw-mail@...> wrote:

Why sometimes? In binary and hex worlds always, counting starts from 0. Daniel Forro On 29 Jun, 2013, at 11:43 PM, charlie midi gfa wrote: > sometimes channel 1 is represented as 0 so 0-15 = 16 midi channels

Charlie/Daniel You are both right! In MIDI messages, the channel is encoded as 0-15 (00-0F hex) but is always described in manuals, on synth LCD readouts and in the MIDI spec, as Channels 1-16. A source of great confusion! Bill --- In CZsynth@yahoogroups.com, Daniel Forró <dan.for@...> wrote:

Pete, I'm glad that has helped. I recently bought a no-name USB-MIDI for a few pounds, for use with an iPad. Tested it with MIDI data in and out, monitoring the codes received by the iPad and sent by it to a PC. Any sysex messages, either way, were converted into a bizarre set of note/controller info that was nowhere near the original sysex message. Lesson learned - always try to use decent MIDI interfaces! Again, I want to encourage people who own and use CZs to read the Casio Midi Guidebook (Nov. 1985). (See Files > CZ - Docs, "Casio CZ Sysex".) Page 7 of the pdf, corresponding with hard copy page 6, lays it out in a very accessible manner: The last 4 bits of the "note on" status command shows the midi channel going from 0000 to 1111, corresponding with channels 1 through 16 [aka 0x00 through 0x0F in hex]. Yes, I realize that binary, decimal, and hexidecimal >>can be<< confusing, but I think its only because people don't take the 10-15 minutes it would take to learn binary and hex. It really does not need to be confusing. That is another reason I encourage CZ owners to read the Midi Guidebook. It should not take longer than 30 minutes. I have seen the issue of >>some<< low-cost usb-midi interface cables having problems with sysex in a couple of other forums. It is possible that the issue relates to (1) drivers, (2) running status, (3) both, and (4) other issues. A week or so ago I stumbled onto something called MidiTest. See http://miditest.earthvegaconnection.com/ . In particular, look at the Direct Music and MIDI entry and the September 25, 2005 entry. I am not sure if that's what's going on with the drivers for the inexpensive usb-midi interface cables with the sysex issues, but maybe its related. PLEASE NOTE: I am passing this on for the benefit of people who genuinely understand this technical stuff. I do not pretend to understand all of it.
