a new Snare for my DTXpressII

a new Snare for my DTXpressII

2006-09-17 by re_ispanico

Hello from Italy.
I play in a band performing only 80's and pure 70's Rock.
DTXII has very good sound set to play this music.

My real problem is the SNARE. Often my snare miss some beat...
or it reproduces Ghost notes.

I think it's time to change the normal Yamaha PAD and buy a new one.
I would Pintech SNARE... but i don't know if "Pintech Acoustech
Electronic Piccolo Snare" plays better than "Pintech Concertcast"

What is the best choice ??

Considering in Italy there is no way to buy it, can You tell me where
can i take it ONLINE ??

Thanks for all.
Cikko

Using a snare on a snare stand can certainly help.

Or a TP100 pad from the DTXtreme?

Pintech have an EU site but it is down for some reason at the moment.
 Try emailing Ranald Mackay ranald@...

I have the TP100 and the 10" Concertcast and keep swapping them
backwards and forwards - I haven't yet made up my mind which I prefer.

Cikko,

My wife bought a Pintech Concertcast snare for me as a present. (I
also use the DTXpress II.) I found it to be too big and out of
proportion for the set. I also found the mesh head to be too
different from the 'feel' perspective, compared to the rest of the
pads in the set. I returned the concertcast and went with the Yamaha
TP100. It is slightly larger than the other pads and has similar
response. I am very happy with this combination.

Good Luck,
Randy

Randy,

I am guessing the Concertcast was not the 10"? I was advised to keep
to a 10" to prevent it being oversized compared to the rest of the kit
so the size is not a problem - the same as the TP100.

I am still comparing the two. The Concertcast has less stick noise
and is bouncier. The volume varies considerably as you go from the
centre to the edge (more so than the Roland mesh pads, I am told).
This can be used to your advantage or it can be a nuisance, depending
on your point of view. I have the dual zone Concertcast, but it needs
either two inputs or a "magic box" to get the rim sound because it is
dual piezo. Doing cross stick sounds requires proper drumming
technique (and bashes your sticks to bits due to the metal rim)
whereas with the TP100 you can just hit the rim how you like. The
volume knob on the TP100 is handy.

I have only been drumming for a couple of years and only on electronic
kit, so my experience is rather narrow.

Keith.

Rubber rim strips can be had that will eliminate the "bashed stick"
and noise problems from the rim. I have Hart Dynamics Pro Snare and
Toms and they all have the rubber rim strips. It helps a lot.

I'm not positive, but I think I've seen it listed on the Drumbalaya
web site. I believe it will work with the Pintech snare rims -- ask
Drumbalaya they will probably know for sure.

You can just go to an auto parts store and buy a coil of the appropriate
size rubber tubing and slit open one side and then put it over the rim.

Thanks, I will have to look into something like that while I still
have some sticks left.

Hi Cikko,

just got my "extended" DTXpress3 special yesterday. I had my dealer
beef it up with another PCY130 mono crash as well as a TP120 snarepad!
I`m very glad that my dealer convinced me to shell out those extra
bucks for the TP120 instead of the TP100, which was also my original
choice- the TP120 feels a lot more snare-like, maybe just because of
it`s size and weight? I initially also didn`t want to bother with a
separate snare stand no more, but the solid feel while working the pad
makes more than up on it, I´d say.
On my old TD-8 set the whole rack was shaking while drumming on the
snare (and I`m not a hard hitter!), what I`ve got now feels a lot better!
So my recommendation for you is to even spend a little bit more and go
for the TP120 instead of TP100!

have fun!
Wolfgang

Hello Wolfgang and thanks for the reply.
You convinced me... i'll buy TP120... and put it on a snare stand.
Last question... are You able to use the 3 different snare zones with Your DTXIII ?? ... also the red trimmer ??

Cikko,

The three zones will work and there is a volume control on the
TP100/TP120 that will also work on the DTXpress, but the red knob will
do nothing on the DTXpress module.

Keith.

Hi Cikko,

I can use the three zones of the pad but not the red knob as far as I
know. this knob will only work with the DTXtremeII!
Otherwise you`ve made the right decision- you`ll be as happy as I am
with that pad!!!

Have fun!
Wolfgang
