new to DTXpress

2003-12-09 by woodybarker

I bought a DTXpress set for my daughter for Christmas. I would like
to get the code up to date and find some pc utitlities for
controlling the unit. Does anyone know of any good sites with links
or utilities to download? I searched for some time through this
group, but found it to be a daunting task.

Hi Woody,

Bucking for father of the year, huh? Seriously, congrats to you and
your daughter. I hope that we can share in some of the excitement to
come. I don't know whether you have any MIDI in your future with the
kit, but if you bought the DTXPress II, the first thing you should
do--before any programming--is a factory set (Utility 1-6 in my old
DTXpress I manual). The module ships with a bug that prevents the
system from setting MIDI note numbers from the outside until you take
this simple step. We all found out the hard way.

Downloading capability on the DTXpress is limited. DTXchange is a
utility that allows you to store kits on you PC, or swap them with
other DTXpress owners. You can find it at our sister site
DTXpressions.com, along with a lot of other useful information. We
won't load you up with a lot of confusing information at this point
(unless you want it), since presumably you won't be unpacking the
unit for another couple of weeks. But the collective resources on
this site are pretty comprehensive should any snags arise (and they
probably will; the DTXpress is a complex piece of equipment). In the
meantime, welcome, welcome, 1,000 times welcome. When the time comes,
please encourage your daughter to visit and participate.

Hi woody, welcome!

In case you haven't discovered it yet, have a look here:

http://www.dtxpressions.com

This is the "sister" site for the DTXpress group and it has quite a few
links to utilities and such you might be able to make use of. If you are
planning to use the PC with your unit, you will need a MIDI connection to
the unit. Though the DTXpress unit has a "host" jack on the back, I've
had the best luck just using good 'ole MIDI cables from the MIDI
interface on my PC to the MIDI IN/OUT jacks on the DTXpress. Good luck
with your (daughters) new kit. My daughter has played on my kit, but I
don't think she's quite up to having one of her own yet:

Woody:

I re-read your message and it occurs to me that you said "get the code up
to date". If by this you mean "flash the BIOS in the module to get it to
the latest firmware", then the answer is you do not need to do this, nor
is it possible.

The firmware/OS in the device is in an EPROM and so far I only know of
one member of the list who has gotten an updated firmware ROM from
Yamaha. This was only to add so rather unique abilities to his
multi-module setup.

Also, in answer to what is usually Question #2 after this one:

There is no way to "upload" new sound samples into the unit. The unit has
a very impressive library of existing sounds that you can modify to a
*very* great extent, but it does not have any "writable" memory into
which you can store or upload new sounds.

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks Vern. I see you have some technical prowless
attacted to your name. I'm familiar with CNE and CNA,
but not a SSE. What is that?

Hey Woody, sadly I don't know what CNE and CNA mean(I
suppouse I should since I work on IT Support), but SSE
it's right there Senior Systems Engineer.

(mmm damn this is off topic, must ask something DTX
related)

By the way, I'm in the need of a Mixer nothing fancy
nothing above $100USD, just enough to connect my
DTXpress(stereo)/guitar(mono)/bass(mono)/mic(mono),
what are your suggestions on this?

I'd like a line out for PC recording purposes, and
another for amplifying purposes......

I guess I'll get a small pa

I'd rather get the behringer 112 ultratwin for my
guitar, the ultrabass1200 for my bass and kb1200 for
drums, but....I guess my wife would be well tempted to
file for divorce....

sadly that would have to wait 'til next year, we still
don't have any children, but my credit card is close
to its limit with all the presents we've already
bought.

I'm confused by your reply. How can you carry a CNE and CNA and not
know what the are? As ODG replied, these are Novell certifications.

Woody,

Vern, the original respondent whose credentials so impressed

I need help

Hi,
I have been playying drum for 13 years and I want to buy an
electronic drum. I have never tried plyying it dough. I can pay
around 1000USD. I am concerned abouth the pad sensivity and
triggering performance regarding the e-drum and roland-v. Thank you
in advance.

Baris,

For that $1,000 burning a hole in your pocket, you can buy a very
good DTXpress II. The Roland V-Club, its most visible rival, will set
you back a little more (and arguably not give you as much). Within
their respective contexts, the triggering performance of both is more
than satisfactory. I personally lean toward the yamaha gum-rubber kit
over the Roland option (not just for price considerations either).
Roland's mesh options paired with the TD-6 and maybe TD-8 are more
refined in sensitivity, but they are more expensive than your budget
allows (and not necessarily better than what Pintech or Hart have to
offer). As Vern and others have so eloquently pointed out on the
board recently, potential buyers should realize that e-drums, despite
similarities with their acoustic counterparts, are instruments in
their own right, which need to be understood and played according to
their own characteristics. You'll find that out quickly if you buy
one, but most people have the time of their lives learning to get
around on their new e-drums. Once they do, practice on the one can
pay dividends on the other.

I should add that both Roland and Yamaha will be offering new kits in
2004. The wait for the Yamaha seems to be until March (see previous
post to J). Right now, the DTXpress II is in short supply (though
Drumbalaya.com might have them). You may have to work hard to find
one (and make sure that you get the truth about back orders if a
store claims to have it). As always, ebay is an option. If you see
something there and have questions about it, by all means ask the
seller, but post the questions here, too. We'll try to help, although
caveat emptor is always the watchword on ebay.

Ed,

Your last words just saved my soul. My situation is i
am currently working saudi arabia as an expat, basicly
i am Turkish. here there is not much opportunutiy to
find what you want. I live in jeddah the most popular
city but could get only two dealer mostly selling
keyboards and have not more than 2 available drumkit.
also they are on snowcase not in box. I will probably
bargain for e drum i have seen on showcase. But most
important issue is how can i understand that this set
is dtxpressII or not. Is there any remarks on
componenets. I dot belive the seller as much as their
lack of english. this is a very silly situation.
no chance to buy it from internet because here s so
strict customs that the package may not enter the
country. Your kind advice.

Baris,

One obvious sign that you are seeing the DTXpress II rather than the
I is that the module is red and "DTXpress II" is written on the top
and front. The DTXPress I module's faceplate is orange. The II's rack
has a red crossbar and two red diagonal supports to the legs. The
kickpad for the II is round; the kickpad for the I is roughly a hard
rubber rectangle mounted on a metal tower. I wouldn't think that many
I's would still be around, though in S.A. the story might be
different. I'd also be surprised if the DTXpress III were available
there. If it is, gobble it up.

(This is a repost, I know, but it took me so long to write the first time
and it seems spot on for what this guy is getting at... ;)

I've seen this question go by and I always think the same thing. Acoustic
drums and electronic drums are *Two* *Different* *Instruments*! Just as
different as a piano and an organ, an acoustic guitar and an electric
guitar, etc. To take this line of reasoning farther, you wouldn't *need*
to learn to play the piano before you could play organ, but there is a
certain transferability of the skills acquired on each.

For me, I found the move to edrums fairly easy, but then again I never
expected to *replicate* acoustic drums with the edrums, I came into it
thinking about learning a *new* instrument. There are advantages and
disadvantages to each instrument, but for the most part they will each
require you to learn new some new skills and adapt some old skills in
order to be successful.

For me, some of the things I discovered on my new instrument was learning
the dynamics of the edrum set. I found that I was hitting harder than I
needed to and that simply turning up the volume on the module made it
easier on my arms. (Picture a piano player trying to get the organ to
play louder by hitting the keys harder!) :) I also learned I didn't need
to play with the butt-end of giant sticks to get the "big rock sound" I
was used to.

I'd say one of the most difficult learning issues was the hi-hat. For the
most part, the toms, cymbals, kick and snare react and respond like their
acoustic counterparts, so my skills transferred over almost directly.
However, the hi-hat not flexing, giving, moving and changing pitch as the
tension of my foot changed required the most "re learning" and I still
haven't gotten to a point where I'm completely happy with what I can get
out of the set.

However, I picture it as a limitation of *my* playing style, and not of
the kit itself. When I play *just* the hat and concentrate, I can usually
get it to make the sound I am after. This is part of learning a *new* and
*different* instrument. Approached with this mindset, you may find you
gain a new skill (that of being able to play edrums) to add to your
existing acoustic drum playing ability. :)

Ed,
I have checked the available electronic drums at
dealer. It is Dtx V2.0 which is I guess grandfather
of dtxpress. The price is you wont believe 2,200USD...
Besides I have seen the dtxpressIII on web site it
felt me like "sell your accoustic one and buy one of
those"...

This is way too broad a topic to answer in complete detail. You
already must know that the module has a single extra input (9/10)
that allows you to add two single-zone pads via a TRS splitter or one
dual-zone pad (not to be confused with the rubber stereo pads that
came with your set). You can also swap two of your single-zone toms
to 9/10 with a splitter to give you other opportunities for stereo
pads in the toms' vacated inputs (any two of 3, 4, and 5).

Beyond that, you can expand your inputs by adding a second module of
your choice and using a mixer or the aux input on one of the modules
to link them together; by getting a trigger to MIDI interface, which
expands inputs via MIDI, drawing its sounds from the original module;
or by waiting for member Keith Raper's so-called magic box, which
splits stereo inputs (heretofore unprecedented) to be offered for
sale. Search our archives under such topics as dual-zone pads, stereo
pads, TRS splitter, mixer, trigger-to-MIDI device, and magic box for
basic information. Then come back with more specific questions.

The Roland should do, although it has one or two features that may be
wasted on the DTXpress; Yamaha doesn't make one. See if you can find a
used TMC-6, or check with Ed Morin at Drumbalaya.com if he has any in
the bargain basement. An older module like a DTXPressI, Alesis DM 4 or
5, or Roland TD-whatever might even cost less, as would discontinued
trigger to MIDI interfaces like the Aphex Impulse, Kat MIDIkiti, or
Roland PM-16, which would be even more cost effective. All of these
older T to M devices are/were wonderful units; the only drawback is
that all of their inputs were mono--not necessarily a gamebreaker for
an auxiliary trigger interface. The DTXpress Explorer module and the
TD-3 are options for current modules in the bargain category. I'd be
remiss if I didn't mention Keith's invention again, which is in what
looks to be its final stage of testing. If you can wait, it might be
just the ticket. Search the archives under magic box for details, or
just look for our recent Special Notice in the messages.
