Eboni 6 ink with Mueso Silver Rag

Eboni 6 ink with Mueso Silver Rag

2010-07-09 by Tom

Do any of you have experience with this combination of Ink and paper?
Mueso Silver Rag is advertised as glossy paper but I have tried a
small sample print on my Epson 1400 even though I believe it is recommended that this ink NOT be used with any paper but matte paper.
I very much like the depth, definition and tone of the sample print.
Should I or should I not use this printer, paper and ink combination?
Could it possibly damage my printer? If Paul Roark is reading this
thread, I would like your comment as well as others who may be using
this set-up. Thanks to all.

No, but:

As I understand it, the problem is the Eboni won't bond with the glossy
coating. So you won't damage your printer - you'll just be able to rub
the ink off the paper. I've seen something similar with UT14 purge
patterns on glossy paper: The black channel is very very black, and
comes off on my fingers.

Mike,
Thanks for your reply. As a result, I just rubbed the corner of the test print and you are absolutely right on!
The ink easily smudges. Oh well, so much for that idea. Anyone know of a matte paper with similar qualities?
I like Red River Aurora White and DMax is not bad but doesn't quite, it seems to me anyway, have the feeling or look
of depth.

You could spray the sheet to protect it and stop the smudging.

Yeah; see the bottom of page 9 of PR's Eboni-6 PDF.

Richard, Thanks for the suggestion and the link. I may give that a try if I
don't find a matte paper that offers similar attributes. There are
sooo many out there that surely there is one that is similar to the Mueso
Silver Rag. Heck; I can't really afford to buy it anyway!!
Appreciate your response.

Can you describe what you want from the paper? That you've asked for matte makes any suggestion already distinctly dissimilar from Silver Rag. We could make some good suggestions if you describe what attributes you are after...

Tyler I'm not sure I can give you much to go on except that the Silver Rag seemed to give the impression of depth.
I guess that doesn't make a lot of sense, just my take on it.

Re: [Digital BW] Eboni 6 ink with Mueso Silver Rag

2010-07-10 by Tom Garrett

Also, Tyler, I very much like the Eboni 6 ink set and have my Epson 1400 dedicated to that and it requires matte paper.
A couple of Red River papers (Aurora White & Premium Matte) are satisfactory except that they don't quite have the appearance of greater depth.

Can you describe what you want from the paper? That you've asked for matte makes any suggestion already distinctly dissimilar from Silver Rag. We could make some good suggestions if you describe what attributes you are after...

Try Generations Elise Fine Art Natural or the new Epson Hot Press Natural.

Richard, Forgot to mention that I spent a good bit of time looking at your
work on your website and thoroughly enjoyed it. You have some
really nice stuff there. Flickr is ok but just doesn't seem to display as
nicely as the website. MHO of course and I've been told on numerous
occasions that it's not worth much. :-)

Converting an Epson 2000P to B&W??

2010-07-10 by John K Stacy

Has anyone converted an Epson Stylus Photo 2000P printer to B&W??

Is it just a matter of installing a black inkset??

TIA,

John S.

With Epson 1400 printers available from Epson as refurbs for $149 dealing
with modifying the 2000P is hardly worth it IMO. I mean 7 picoliters for
the 2000P vs. 1.5 for the 1400?

That may be true, but I HAVE the 2000P, and wouldn't I then have to modify
the 1400 anyway??

(Picoliters = droplet size???)

John..

There is NO NEED to modify the 1400..all you need do is get a set of empty auto-resetting chipped cartridges, and bulk ink for refilling..MY source is http://www.inksupply.com ..look for the "UT14" workflow from Paul Roark on their site in the B&W section..Once you get into it, it's pretty much plug and play..The 1400 is a GREAT machine in comparison to your 2000..I wouldn't put my efforts into a machine that no one is supporting anymore..

Good Luck!

Yes, it is a six-color printer, and the only change to the printer is
installing new cartridges. But your workflow will probably change and
might become quite complex: There are several B&W-only inksets for the
1400, with different characteristics (e.g. UT14 can be used on glossy or
matte papers, but Eboni-6 on glossy must be treated after printing) and
which one is best for you will depend on a number of factors: glossy vs
matte paper, desired print tone, tolerance for learning new software,
etc.

There have been quite a few threads regarding the various B&W options
for the 1400, so you should probably search the group archives for more
information. It can be tough to assemble all the information into a
coherent idea of how you go from capture to print - e.g. Paul's UT14.pdf
is more a description for the experienced than it is a tutorial for the
beginner - but the information's out there and many people have
succeeded.

Thanks Mike, I'll do some more digging. I already have the 2000P, so I will search it too. B&W is just an experiment at this point...once I figure out what I'm doing...AND if I LIKE it....I'll go from there, I just don't want to buy another printer.

Thx,

For the record; I use the 1400 with Paul Roark's Eboni 6 carbon ink set and get great results and do not use any curves
etc. I buy the ink set from www.inksupply.com. The type of paper you use will somewhat determine whether it will print
cooler or warmer. Yes, all 6 inks are a variation of black.

I'd second this suggestion, particularly with respect to the Epson Hot Press Natural. Eboni and Crane Museo Silver Rag, however, is not a good combination. Eboni is matte only, and Silver Rag is a glossy paper.

Typically the Epson driver set to "Color Controls" and gamma 2.2 works best as a starting point. I always use the highest quality settings -- the best matte paper they have listed ("Archival Matte" probably), with High Speed off/un-checked, and the resolution set to the highest.

If you like a neutral image, Epson Hot Press natural is what I now consider the best paper. Premier Art Smooth BW should give you an almost cool image, though it does contain OBAs. So, those two papers are the ones I'd start with for neutral-cool matte prints. Many papers will print a medium warm image with the Eboni/Carbon-6 inks.

While adjusting the gamma and other controls in the Epson driver may get you close enough to the monitor's display of the image, I favor ICCs made with QTR's Create ICC (Create ICC-RGB if you're using Lightroom) to perfect the match between monitor and print.

Just my opinion of course but before I spend almost $100 for a cart and ink
set for a 7 picoliter OLD printer I'd consider the overall cost if in the
end I do not like it and decide to go with a newer printer.

Just how old is that 2000P and how long do you expect it to last?

Paul, care to comment on your opinion on 7-picoliter printer vs a 1.5 one
with eboni inks these days?

Re: [Digital BW] Converting an Epson 2000P to B&W??

2010-07-11 by John K Stacy

Let me explain myself a bit better...I will spend the $50 or so to try the
2000P (which is a VERY good color photo printer), if it is acceptable (and
MY acceptable may be MUCH different than yours), I'll move forward. If not,
I will stop and NOT spend money on another printer. B&W is not an
objective, just an experiment.

Hi Richard,

>...

Well, those big old 7 pl non-variable drops, lack of 2880 resolution, and slower printing speeds have their downside. No doubt about that.

On the other hand, the 2000P I had for a while also produced the best dmax on some papers (1400 beats it on Arches uncoated HP), did not have the clogging issues of the 1280 (1400 is probably the best in this regard, however), and, most importantly, may be able to print *dilute* carbon inks more neutrally than any modern printer.

The main reason I got rid of my 7500 was that it could not print as smoothly as I wanted on Arches uncoated watercolor paper. On coated papers like the Premier Art Smooth BW, the 7500 was able to print an incredibly neutral image. See page 7 of http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf

I got rid of the 7500 before I was able to test the differences in tone v. drop size on the new Epson Hot Press paper, but, in general, with dilute carbon inks the larger the drops, the less warm the image.

Then again, with the 1400 and the 1.5 pl drops a black only is almost totally neutral on several papers, including the Epson HP. BO, however, requires a perfect printer to be smooth, and even then with only one dense ink firing the smooth areas may show some grain and un-evenness. A 2% Eboni dilution at 7 pl might make smoother prints.

So, bottom line, for some uses, particularly if the costs can be held down (read Carbon-6), the 2000P might well be worth testing.

I'd use Carbon-6. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Carbon-6.pdf

I'd mix it with the C6b base --
See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Ink-Mixing.pdf

(I don't think the Tergitol surfactant in the C6c base is needed for the 2000P. In fact, the Edwal LFN might not even be needed, but I'd use it.)

For relatively neutral prints on non-OBA paper, I'd use Epson Hot Press Natural. For cooler prints yet, I'd use Premier Art Smooth BW (with OBAs).

For medium warm prints on economical paper, I'd use Red River Aurora Natural.

If I were printing for the local museum I'd use Premier Art Smooth 325, and possibly also Epson Premier Art Scrapbook if the 325 doesn't feed well. I'd buy the non-Red River papers at www.Atlex.com.

The main problem I'd look for is carts that don't fit well and allow air to be pulled into the ink around the inlets. I'm suspicious that these old style multi-ink carts from third parties sometimes did not seal well.

Good luck. Let us know how it all works out.
