Hello All (Probably mostly Paul), I got a 1400 printer and ordered the UT 14 inkset. But, with the current low price on the 1100, I am wondering about a setup where I dedicate one of the printers to gloss and one to matte. I am not opposed to just running through the UT 14 and refilling, soooo.... What is the current thought on the ultimate two printer B&W set up? I am okay with mixing dyes, I think. John

Hi Johnny.. I have 2 1400's..One dedicated to Lyson XG dyes from ink2image.com, (GREAT!) , and the other set up for UT 14inks from MIS(inksupply.com)..From which you can print Glossy, or MATT..No problems and no clogs..Also GREAT..You can usually pick up 1400's for less than $200 with rebates..The most I paid was $179 about 3 yrs ago.. Good Luck! Eddie

Hello Eddie, Thanks for the quick response. I have a 1400 on the way for $219 after rebate, but found an 1100 for $107, so thought it might be a good addition. John --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "edward wiseman" <pahts@...> wrote:

Johnny.. Remember, your printer is ultimately going to be your LEAST expense in printing..INKS and paper will be your GREATEST expenses..Think about it.. Here's a 1400 for $199 after the rebate http://www.atlex.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=C11C655001 Eddie

Hello Eddie, I am pretty good on the basic economics here. For me, the 1400 will cost about $140 more than the 1100 at the moment (I am in Canada but can order the 1100 and pick it up in the US), and a recent post from Paul said, in part, "the 1100 can make the most neutral 100% carbon print that can be made", so I wanted to gain more insight into the options. At MIS prices, $140 buys a fair bit of ink. And please, call me "John". Thanks John --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "edward wiseman" <pahts@...> wrote:

I currently have Eboni-6 in the 1400 (http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf) and Noritsu dyes in the 1100 (http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/1100-Dye.pdf). It could be the other way around, but mixing a single Noritsu LK (30%[13% M + 87% K] + 70% clear base) is a lot simpler than mixing a full hextone set for the 1400. I don't claim this is some ultimate setup. It just is where I am today. I just printed a 17" wide panorama of Paris (see www.PaulRoark.com) that is 10,700 pixels wide. On the metallic paper it is amazing -- detail freaks will love it. This is quick and easy, but probably not what I'll be selling. (Though I am exploring un-glazed B&W dye display options.) I think the Paris panoramic deserves Arches uncoated, with traditional B&W fine art display. I'll do that first on the 1400, which does the best Arches with Eboni-6. So, there are several reasons for me to keep that printer as is and use the 1100 for the glossy B&W dyes. By the way, I was thinking of changing the formula for the clear dye base, but I don't have the time for the testing at the moment, so I'll put the old formula back on the web. It works extremely well. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.) I've been trying to find a way to open this dye printing up to more people (and lower costs), but really, the WF 1100 and WF 30 are so good and easy with the LK mixed with the current base that I just don't have much incentive to do more. The slightly larger drop of the 1100 has a minor advantage on the 1400 with dilute Eboni. I think some of the other variables are more important than the minor tone differences, however. The paper is the huge variable with respect to Eboni-6 tone; the drop size differences are minor. So, I would not make a decision just on that. To me, the ease of a single mixed ink is a large variable where one is mixing their own ink batches. I'm happy to pay MIS to mix my Eboni-6, but I have to do the dyes myself. Time is a very scarce resource at the moment. So keeping it as simple as possible with the dyes wins for me. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Hi John..
Paul Roark is the "GURU" on this subject..NO Question about that..
For me to have a dedicated B&W printer that will give me variable tones from cool to warm with the same inkset, and more warm or cool dependent upon the paper I'm using, and ALSO allow me to print B&W on GLOSSY paper without artifacts is PERFECT..I believe that you would be limited to "matt" finish papers with the 1100 and the MIS "K" dilutions..It depends upon what you are looking for..Prints will probably last longer with THAT inkset..I am not trying to discourage you from either B&W solution..After all, Paul is the "innovator" of BOTH workflows..It's ultimately up to you as to which process to go with..
Just my $2.00 USD's worth..(USD devaluation!)

Even if carbon inks are dedicated to matte papers, it is false to believe that printing on glossy (baryta) paper is impossible. I have a 1400 with Eb1400 kit (Eb5 + UT14-C) and printing on Hahnmühle Fineart Baryta and PhotoRag Baryat works well. Of course, one needs to use Lumijet varnish after printing, but anyway I already do that on matte paper as well. Sylvain. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800-Glossy.pdf. I found if I added PK to the 1800 mix, it was much easier to control the tendency of the 100% black Eboni areas to go a little flat. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/3MK-Glossy.pdf for a solution that used Glop for the overcoat. (I'm not a fan of glop over coats, which I think do not dry to as hard and nice a finish as a spray, and then there are pizza wheel problems also.) Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Hello Paul, That is a very nice image. Is swapping out cartridges, say from UT14 to Eboni6 a recommended approach? I assume there is a fair bit of waste. John > I don't claim this is some ultimate setup. So, there are several reasons for me to keep that printer as is and use the 1100 for the glossy B&W dyes. more.

I do quite a lot of cartridge swapping, but it's a hassle, wastes ink, and fills the bottom of the printer with that waste ink. (I may be on my second reset for that problem on the 1400. I'm waiting for ink to start pouring out the sides.) Compatibility wise, there is no problem among the inks being discussed here. As far as I know the only compatibility issue with Eboni-6 (not Eboni and not Carbon-6 [generic base mix]) is between Eboni-6 dilute inks and UltraChrome inks. Paul www.PaulRoark.com
