I'm ready to throw my 1430 out

I'm ready to throw my 1430 out

2013-03-11 by rfsteckmeyer

I'm running a 1430, windows 7, Photoshop CS5, and MIS E4+ ink set. The printer indicated that it needed ink in four positions all at once; Y, B, LC, LM. I parked the carriage, filled each to the top, bled the bottom, reinstalled and it now says that all four are still empty and of course it will not print.

As you would expect the folks at Inksupply / MIS are unavailable at this time. So I have two questions:

Is there any way to make the 1430 ignore the ink levels? Paul says that he ignores them but I don't see how this is possible.

Has anyone found a more responsive supplier than Inksupply for B&W printing?

Thanks

Hi

I had the same problem the first time I refilled my 1430; I stopped the printer, started it, waited to see what light was getting "on". Started the printer, push lightly on the "Ink replacement" button, removed and replaced the culprit. As the printer did his normal routine, another light went "on". I redid the same procedures three or four times. Never had a problem since then.

Hope this helps. I'm running MIS cartridges (EB6).

As far as I'm aware you cannot over-ride the printer from stopping when it thinks a cart is empty. This seems to often cause frustration. I don't know if there is a chip such as used in Continuous Ink Systems, but that may solve this issue, however you'd need to check levels manually.

Did you refill the carts when the supplies facility showed them as low, or did the light go on indicating they were empty?

It seems the printer doesn't always reset if it indicates low, only when the empty light is on and you change the cart indicated by a light on the cart carrier. I now only refill the cart when the empty indicator is showing. They definitely won't reset if the ink level is above 10%.

Are the carts definitely for the 1430? Apparently the ones for the 1400 need the chip to be manually reset, they won't be reset by pulling out and replacing. I believe this is done by "shorting out" the upper two contacts e.g. touching both at the same time with a bit of bent wire or tweezers (metal).

Up until recently on mine, the empty indicator came on after a print had finished, however recently it came on part way through a print. I refilled the cart and it continued without a problem on the print.

Hope this is helpful.

Ross:

I'm feeling your pain. I'm not ready to throw my 1430 out, but I'd trade it for a good used 1400 anytime!

I still have one MIS position that won't clear - black. I'm using Epson ink in that position for the time being and that's working but I'd really like to get back to a full set of MIS cartridges and inks.

I've tried a couple of things to resolve this, none of which worked.

-long power off and restart, no.

-long power off with all cart removed, no.

-remove and replace all cartridges, no.

-re-install all Epson Inks, then re-install MIS inks, no.

-top up black MIS cart, no.

-swap MIS cyan ink with MIS black ink; black LED says on, cyan stays off: that's really interesting, but I don't know what it means. To me it means that the issue is not the black cartridge or chip - but then, what is it?

I'll try your re-set suggestion and see what that does. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct way to reset a cart and explain when it should be done?

Have you tried disabling the EPSON Status Monitor?

Right Click on your printer icon
Select 'Printer Preferences'
Select the 'Maintenance' tab
Find the box that reads 'Speed and Progress'
Click in the box next to 'Disable Epson Status Monitor'. A tick will appear in the box
Select 'OK'

From my basic understanding of electronics, I doubt it. The suggestion is
to short-circuit two contacts, but you'd need some current flow to do that.

I did buy a resetter from Inksupply when I bought a set of empty cartridges
for my 2200 last year. It's got a battery in it and an LED that changes
from red to green when it determines that the reset is complete. It works,
and I've just gotten into the habit of resetting every cartridge when I
refill the inks. No problems in ~4 months.

The previous cartridges I used were from InkJetMall and were truly
auto-resetting (with ~2 years of use), but they discontinued their 2200
supplies. I'm still using their cartridges for my 1400 and don't use a
resetter. I should probably buy another couple of sets from them.

Pete

I can add to my list of things that don't work:

- grounding the two round contacts on the cartridge to 'reset' it

- changing the printer settings to disable advanced printing features; this was as close as I could come to finding a magical setting that tells the printer not to check the ink levels

I don't know what to do with this thing. It just won't recognize a 3rd party cartridge in the black position.

I have a 1430 (upgraded from a 1400) and I can suggest a couple of things
and clear up a couple:

1. Shorting the two contacts will NOT reset the cart.

2. There is no way to tell the printer to not check the ink levels.

Check the chip on your cart to see what version it is. On my carts 'V6.0'
appears at the top left. It's my understanding that this is the latest
series chip for the 1400/1430/??? Series printers and on my 1430 this chip
is recognized as being genuine Epson.

These chips keep track of the ink in the cart by counting head shots which
is very inaccurate and which is probably by design. In my experience when a
cart is indicated as being low there is about 1-2 ccs of ink remaining. My
procedure is that when a cart is indicated as needing replacement I remove
the cart, refill it using my trusty syringe, and replace it. When the chip
thinks that the remaining ink is less than 10%, refilling and returning the
cart to the printer causes a reset to full.

Hmmm

Very sorry it's still not working.

It looks like the cart is not the problem, maybe there's an issue with the contacts on the cartridge carrier? Do they look okay, are any bent? Maybe using a cotton swab with alcohol, in case a drop of ink is on them? Is there anything stopping the chip touching the contacts, e.g. something stopping the cart fulling clicking home?

As I said my carts seem okay, as the other poster said, there is V6.0 written on mine too. They also have 1400 written on them.
