piezo inks are.

Jerry

Re: 4: Jerry Olson Re: [Digital BW]

Tim
I found the purple. What curve are you adjusting? a transfer curve or an
adjustment curve? I don't know anything about transfer curves. How are
you adjusting it?

I also found the 4th purple to be the best. Will print again with
different profiles to see if I can get a print to match my monitor. (See
previous post)\

Re: 4: Jerry Olson Re: [Digital BW]

2001-09-15 by Jerry Olson

Just did it Tim, I found the one.

I tried the "Printer Color Management Profile", and purple four duotone.
Results much more closely match the monitor. Then I tried the Adobe RGB
profile, and that was a hair too light. The Generic RGB profile is just
about to come out of the printer as I type.

All three have the desired color. No crossovers. This is absolutely
amazing for a color inkset. Perfect selenium tone prints!!!!!! (epson
archival Matte paper). I'm VERY impressed.

Okay, the Generic RGB profile print just came out of the printer. It
appears to match the monitor perfectly. There does not appear to be any
metamerism to speak of, either.

If you haven't tried third party archival color inks yet, I suggest you
get the MIS set and give these settings a try. I wonder why Adobe just
didn't label these purple colors "Selenium 1, 2, 3, and 4? That's what
these appear to be.

The first three are just a hair too cold and blue, especially the first
one. But that fourth one.! It's perfect.

Of course, I've only tried the one image, but it is a snow scene, and
river, and looks really perfect with these colors.

I'm going to put a print in the south window tomorrow and see how long
it takes to shift.

If these colors hold up, one probably wouldn't even need a quad or
hextone set of inks. I'll be printing on many different papers over the
next few days to see how this workflow holds up.

Hi Jerry,

The curve window next to the color is the one I adjust. My
understanding is this adjusts the distribution of the color
throughout the print. I'm not sure if you can adjust the purple
itself and leave the black alone. You might be able to do this with
saturation I'm not sure. You are far more experienced with PS6.01
than I am. I'm really glad to find that you can get a selenium-tone
from MIS Archival color. Maybe I've finally found my inks. Thanks
again, I really appreciate your help.

Jerry,

What setting are you using. On my 1280 with the MIS Pigments I get purple in the black areas and blues from 75% down to 0%.

Mike, I don't get any purples or color shifts at all with the VM ink.

You are using the VM Black? Not the regular black, or the double
density black?

The epson settings are 1440 DPI, error diffusion On, high speed off,
Photo Quality Inkjet paper setting for Media,
Automatic is checked, and in the print dialogue box, Same as source is
the profile selected.

I have just experimented with the MIS color pigments in my 1160, using
duotones. Photoshop offers about 20 duotones int the "Pantone" duotone
folder. They have 4 purple choices, Purple bl1, bl2, bl3, and bl4. The
bl 4 results in an almost identical selenium tone look on regular photo
paper. I can't believe you can actually get a black and white print with
no color crossovers with MIS Archival Color inks. I've only made about
half a dozen prints so far, but it looks like it will work for most
images. The look is as nice as the paul roark curves with VM inks, so
far. But there's too many variables to make a conclusion, just yet. But
this is certainly worth many more tests. I have to run some even gray
tests to check out the dot patterns, which I haven't done yet. No
noticeable dots on the prints I've made so far, but these have no areas
of smooth gray.

Jerry,

I was referring to the color crossover with the color inks.

I loaded the MIS archival inks into my 1280. Using the color setting recommended (Printed on a 21 step wedge) I am getting deep purples in the shadows, the rest of the steps are lovely shades of cool gray.

Mike
