No it's there, just not very wide. It's the perimeter of the pad that
surrounds the cloth-looking part. I was told once that it helps to
keep it wiped off with a swab. Not hard to do, I use a foam swab with
40% ethanol to distilled water and wipe around the rim once in a great
while. Ink builds up on it over time. I should mention that it's a
shot in the dark- and since Epson carts work good in your 1280 I
wouldn't suspect it as the problem.
It does have a

And the exit port seals on the CIS carts? The only other thing I can
think of...

Jerry I have reached that point myself in the past. It is a bad place
to get, but giving up image making should not have to be an option.
This is why I went with 2200/IP5 (soon to be 5.5), even at the upfront
expense.
I live with the dots in highlights. I know they are there, I have
compared them with VM output, etc. For me, in real life, when my
prints are on a wall, no one has yet bothered me about dots in
highlights. In comparisons you can see the problem, but if it's a
choice between not being able to do prints from a practical viewpoint
at all (which it is for me) I'll take the dots any day.
You really have to stare at the highlights close up to see them. So
whether it is acceptable is an individual choice I think. They are
close enough to blending into mat paper that it may be a toss up for some.
The perfectionist will not accept them maybe. But Jerry, I look at it
as I do cameras...I can get great shots with an p&s Olympus XA or a
Canon/ Nikon SLR, a MF Mamiya.....or I can buy Leica glass. If I'm a
good enough photog, I can make negs with a milk carton.
Those dots may put it out of the realm of Leica or MF comparison. But
the prints may be equivilant to Canon glass. Is this really so awfull,
if the alternative is abandoning image making? Interesting question...
