QuadToneRIP new features

QuadToneRIP new features

2003-08-02 by Roy Harrington

There's a new version now available. Both the Mac OS X version and the
Linux source code are included.

See: http://harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html

The lastest download has a few enhancements.

1) The major addition is an automated Linearization capability. This requires a
densitometer or the Eye-One spectro-photometer. With this feature once partitioning
of gray inks is done, by simply measuring densities and entering them into the
descriptor file a correction curve is generated to achieve the ideally spaced stepwedge
i.e. one that is optimized for equal visual separation throught the range.

2) The ink droplet size for 4 picoliter printers using 1440x720 resolution has been
increased. Several of the most popular printers fall into this category -- the 1160,
the 1270, and the 1280. This means that the potential dMax for these printers is has
been increased when printing at 1440x720.

3) Quite a bit of tuning has been done for the 2200 printer. Both the internals have
been tweaked for greater smoothness and Carl has created all new curves for several
papers.

 4) The Run-Install-Curves script is now automatically run whenever you create a
curve using Run-Quad-Profile. Also a password is no longer needed for this.

-------

Just in case there is a flurry of questions, unfortunately I will be away
for much of August, so I won't be able to answer emails for a while.

I have been playing with this and encourage people to try it. I will
post a few things about it when Roy gets back so he can defend himself <G>
If you are put off by the mention of a densitometer or the EyeOne,
don't be. Everything is there to get good results with only a moderate
flatbed scanner to compare densities, and I suspect you could even do
it by eye. Final linearization is a breeze with an EyeOne, but it's so
smooth before finalizing you can also do that visually.
Try it.

I am a fairly good windows user but know nothing about Mac's or
Linux.
I would very much like to use a printer rip with my 2200 for B/W and
QuadTone can't be beaten on price. The question is, should I run
Linux on one of old pc's and network it as a print server, or,
should I go and purchase a Mac to do it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Barry

The learning curve for Linux/freeBSD is not trivial, unless you already have
some familiarity with UNIX. Once you get beyond the GUI interface that most
distributions install for you they are pretty much command line systems.
You will need to get into the guts of the system to port something like
QuadTone Rip from the Mac to a Linux box. With two good free rips available
for the Mac it would be far easier, but also something more expensive, to
get a used Mac and go from there. I would go that route myself but the cost
of a decent Mac is beyond me for the moment so I will try to muddle through
with a UNIX like system.

Need help with QuadToneRIP

2003-08-02 by John Vitollo

Ok...I've installed everything and have Piezotones on an 1160. I'm using the 1160-
fs.quad file.

All works until I hit Print then Print Center displays "Sending print to file" or "Processing
Page" then just disappears and displays "No job printing."

If I DO NOT choose the 1160-fs curve in the Quad Tone Rip Curve #1 it prints.

Any idea how to fix this?

Re: [Digital BW] Need help with QuadToneRIP

John,

A few things to check. Did you do a re-start after the QuadtoneRIP 2.0
installation? Does your quadtonerip printer name in PrintCenter match
what is in the 1160-fs profile description file (see below)? If not,
change the printer name in the 1160-fs descriptor file to match the
name of your quadtonerip printer, exactly as it is in printcenter and
then re-install the 1160-fs profile with Run-Quad-Profile. May also be
a permissions problem - try doing a repair permissions with Disk
Utility.

Thanks Carl!

I got it working - but I did many things so I'm not totally sure what did the trick.

The printer name was the same as the profile description file - but I renamed the
printer with the underscore for the space. Didn't seem to help.

I was working off a copy of the CurveDesign folder on my HD but kept getting
Terminal errors everytime I dropped the 1160-fs file onto the window.

What worked - I think! - was working from the disk image of QuadToneRip. With the
CurveDesign window openned I dragged and dropped 1160-fs to the desktop to copy
it. Doubled clicked Run-Quad-Profile from the disk image, then dragged and dropped
the 1160-fs copy to the Terminal. That worked. If I dragged and dropped the 1160-fs
file from the disk image to the Terminal window a crash would occur:

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x0000000c

I'll go over the instructions as I probably missed something.

Thanks again,

John V.

Many thanks to Roy for making all this hard work available and to Carl also for doing
the 2200 profiles. I have just one question for Carl. Which of the three sets of paper
profiles would you recommend for use with Somerset Enhanced Velvet from St
Cuthberts Mill?

Cheers

Steve,

I haven't used this paper, but if the dmax is relatively low try the
the BES profiles. The approximate relative dmax order for the three
paper profiles I made are EEM 1.70, HPR 1.64, BES 1.56.

[Digital BW] Re: QuadToneRIP new features

2003-08-03 by kiwikale

Hmmmm.....how would I find out the paper's dMax? If it is any help (UK to US) this
paper is sold exclusively by Legion in the US as Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet
(there is also a Textured variation). I believe it is also the same paper as Epson
Velvet Fine Art (not available in the UK). See:

http://www.inkjetart.com/news/archive/IJN_11-05-02.html

(This page raises another question - are the UT inks pigment or dye?) I am not at all
familiar with Brightcube Eclipse Satine but am I right in assuming from the above
article that the paper would be closer to Hahnemuhle Photo Rag? (which by the way
costs at least twice as much as Somerset in the UK).

Thanks again

Steve

Re: [Digital BW] Re: QuadToneRIP new features

2003-08-03 by Carl Schofield

Steve,

I dug around in my paper drawer and found an unused package of Somerset
Photo Enhanced paper (225 gsm). I believe this may be the same paper
you are using and it is #2 in the list of Somerset papers in the list
at the link you provided. I'm not sure if it is the "Velvet" or
"Textured" surface, since it was purchased a couple of years ago. The
surface looks very similar to the uncoated Somerset Velvet (250 gsm)
which I also have but haven't used. I profiled the SPE paper for QTR
2.0 and uploaded the profiles to my filesharing site. The profiles are
in the "SPE.sit" archive, inside the QuadToneRIP2.0 folder. This paper
does not perform particularly well with the UC inks and it has a dmax
(1.51) even lower than BES (1.56). The blacks are not very deep and
also exhibit some mottling. This is not the same paper as the Epson
velvet fine art, which is reported to have a much higher dmax, closer
to that for EEM. The MIS Ultratone (UT) and Epson Ultrachrome (UC)
inks are both pigment inks.

[Digital BW] Re: QuadToneRIP new features

Carl

Thanks again. You have really gone out of your way and I appreciate it. Thanks also
for the clarification on the paper differences and ink types (I should have read my own
posted reference further which has a good description of what Epson has done to the
underlying Somerset Velvet from St Cuthberts Mill to give it a better dMax). I assume
that the flaking they refer to with the Hahnemuhle paper is not too big an issue and
well worth sacrificing for the deeper blacks etc ? You've got me wanting to give this
paper a whirl...

Cheers

Steve
