Problem with UT2 / 1280

Problem with UT2 / 1280

2004-02-28 by rbehr2001

I recently installed a UT2 inkset in a new factory rebuilt Epson 1280
printer. When I print using Slider Controls or curves, I get very
uneven distribution of densities at the light and dark ends of the
scale as measured with a X-RITE 810 densitometer;

Light Density
0% 0.09
5% 0.11
10% 0.14
15% 0.18
Dark Density
85% 1.71
90% 2.05
95% 2.23
100% 2.24

Between 20-80% the distribution is relatively even. Using curves, the
distribution is even worse. I have reviewed the latest instructions
on the MIS website and I believe I'm following them pretty closely.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

I have some slider setting for glossy paper, UT2 & 1280 at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT2-Readme.htm .

Be sure the settings are as set out in that Readme file.

Let me know if MIS has different settings.

RE: [Digital BW] Problem with UT2 / 1280

2004-02-28 by Paul Roark

I'd re-check the settings and be sure there is no embedded profile in the
file that is being printed.

I don't have an easy way to check ink densities or positions. It sounds
like the positions must be OK. If not you'd have more serious problems.

What paper are you using?

Paul,

I'm working with preloaded cartridges from MIS so ink
density/position should not be a problem.

When I go to "assign profile" (in Photoshop CS) the "don't color
manage this document" is checked which seems to indicate no profiles.
Also, the values are as indicated, i.e. 90%=90%, 80%=80%, etc., on
the info palette.

I'll recheck everything in the morning. I'm using Epson Premium
Semigloss PP. I'll also try a different paper.

RE: [Digital BW] Problem with UT2 / 1280

2004-02-29 by Paul Roark

Bob,

I found my Premium Semigloss test strips with the settings that are in my
UT2 Readme file. As the Readme file indicates, and somewhat consistent with
your readings, the first/lightest 3 steps are lighter and lower in contrast
than my target densities. I measure the paper base (0%) at 0.05, 5% = 0.08,
10% = 0.11, and 15% = 0.14, which is my target for 10%, not 15%. After this
the steps have normal and then higher than normal contrast. At the dark end
I originally had 2.40 at 100% and 2.0 at 95%. These have now dropped to
2.14 and 1.93, which is still reasonably good.

The densities you reported were:

> Light Density
> 0% 0.09
> 5% 0.11
> 10% 0.14
> 15% 0.18
> Dark Density
> 85% 1.71
> 90% 2.05
> 95% 2.23
> 100% 2.24
> ...

I'd guess your system is working about like mine at the light end, but the
dark end seems to be giving significantly different results. The steps on
my tests strips at the dark end appear to be well separated.

Paul,

Sounds like my problems might be a combination of the original curve
being slightly off and minor printer differences. I'm going to switch
to Eboni for Matt and Gloss, retry with Eboni Curves and then fine
tune the results for my printer. Thanks so much for the help.
