I have the same printer and inks and the same problem. In my case there are
two types of lines. One is a single distinct line that looks like someone
used a ruler and a #2 pencil and drew a straight line from the top to the
bottom of the image. This line is most obvious in areas like skies but it's
always there and always in the same place on the image. The other type of
line isn't as distinct, isn't of uniform width or intensity, and tends to
appear in groups.

I haven't found a fix for the first kind and I suspect it's a mechanical
problem with my scanner (you don't say whether you use a flatbed scanner or
not, if you do and if the lines appear on your monitor screen as well as the
print then it may just be a matter of keeping the scanner clean, even small
amounts of dust can create lines in the image). The second type of line or
groups of lines has been fixed by properly aligning the heads (I put the
paper on a light box and use an 8X loupe).

Do your lines look like they could be smears or one nozzle that fires
continously? If it looks like one nozzle firing, do they extend
outside the print area on one side? In either case it probably has
nothing to do with the ink but I'd try putting color dye carts back in
to be sure.

If it's a smear, you need to clean the bottom of the heads with a
windex soaked paper towel.

If it's a nozzle firing, you're really out of luck as it's an
electrical connection problem between the printer and the heads and is
unrepairable. I had this and got Epson to do a warranty replacement.
This problem was discussed quite a bit recently over on the Epson
priter Yahoo group.

That's exactly what I get.

It's not a scanner problem as two if the images came form a digital
SLR. My guess is that the carts are not 100% compatible. I just put
my color catridges back in and the problem disappeared. When I
reinstalled the MIS carts the lines reappeared. I am going to
contact the company and request a new set.

I've had a number of problems with the MIS cartridges over the years and
they've always been very good about replacing them. Their customer service
in my experience has been great, you talk with real prople and they're very
nice.

Quick follow up. I e-mailed tech support at MIS and this was their
reply:

This problem can be caused by a slightly over filled cartridge. It
does not pose a problem and can usually be cleared by running three
cleaning cycles. You may repeat the process if necessary and you may
also print our purgeblack page to prevent the system from trying to
spray extra ink.

It wiill clear up by the time you have finished these steps.

You down load our purge files at this link....

[Digital BW] Re: Epson 1280 Thin Black Lines on Printout

2004-11-30 by Michael Hung

Did that fix it for you? The thin-lines/microbanding just came back
last night on my 1270.. wasted 2 13x19 prints already.

Slightly over-filled carts? That's strange. My old cart is close to
finish when that happened last night so I replaced it with a new one.
And it is still there. I switched with a OEM 007 cart and it's working
fine. But once switched back to the new UT2 black cart it's back. (And
I did cleaning cycles and purge prints).

Anyway, I gave up last night and did a tiny test print this morning
before heading to work. It seems to be working ok again.. (But then it
could work fine for half a 13x19 and the 2nd half is bad).

I am getting quite sick of the problems. Would a UT2 CIS work better
or worse? Or should I just dump the setup to get a 2200 and stay with
Epson ink and print with QTR or BlackOnly..

Michael

You could end up with similar issues with Epson inks also. Did you make sure that you
looked carefully up there around the head and paper feed area to see if there was any ink
build up there that is transfering to the paper? I've had this issue with Epson inks when
black ink got built up in the printer and when the paper rubbed across it it transfered to
the media. You might need a strong light to look up in there.

I have had the very same problem. After listening to the techies at Epson through enumerous cleaning cycles, head cleaning, new cartridges etc., I took it to an Epson certified repair facility and they diagnosed that it was a motherboard problem. That would have required an expense that was very close to what a new 1280 would cost. So I have been using the 1280 solely for text printing and a 7600 for printed images.

Don't be fooled by the those equally spaced lines being printed across the page which will sometimes not be there. You will only be frustrated when you think you have the problem fixed plus you will be spending a great deal of money on paper and ink.

I have had this problem, on and off, with my 1280 with
the MIS CIS UT2 inkset. For the first six months it
was great and I was finally getting the kind of prints
I had been looking for. Then it started putting those
narrow black/grey lines in a print. I tried the clean
cycles and the PURGE6 images from CIS. Sometimes it
actually got worse. Right now, if I print at 360dpi
it will print without the lines, but if I try 720 or
1440 the lines are back. I am currently working
around the problem by printing in BO as I get no lines
  there.

I have read somewhere that this is caused by a failure
in the PC board inside the printhead which results in
one or more nozzles being always on and not being
controlled by the driver. If true, it means the head
is toast and the printer will have to be replaced. As
a last effort I am going to remove the CIS and replace
with the OEM inkset and see if this fixes the
  problem..... we shall see.

Michael..I haven't tried it yet. When I switched back the inks from
my swap test the problem abated although I'm sure it will come back.
I hope to not give up on it since I also have a 2200 and used QTR
with both setups and prefer the UT2 printouts vs the UC inks.

John..Not sure it's an ink buildup problem. It doesn't manifest on
the printout that way. It looks like more of a misfiring nozzle than
anything. The lines are defined. I've had the smear problems you
described with OEM inks and they presented differently.
