If Kirkland is made by Ilford, do you think this may be the paper: http://www.ilford.com/html/us_english/prod_html/galerie/CS/Home.html Ilford has a contract division that can package paper to your specific size. If it is Ilford making the Kirkland, I wonder if it would be possile to have that same surface coating put on a 100% cotton base? Scott

Scott if it is made by Ilford it is heavier stock then any of the Ilford papers. On the Costco web site it lists the thickness as # 10 mils and the weight as 260g/m2 While Ilford Classic Gallery glossy is 9 mils and 240g/m2 I'm going to check this paper out the price is just to good to pass up even if I only end up using it for junk. If it is a decent paper I could be quite happy making prints for this cost. Mark W. 10--- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "scott_now_coming" <scott_now_coming@y...> wrote:

I picked up a package yesterday while shopping at Costco and I am stunned. It provides, hands down, the best color and black and white photos on glossy paper that I've been able to produce on My Epson 2200 and Epson 4000. As much as I prefer matte papers, my customers prefer glossy for portrait type photos. I've been a bit frustrated, and quite frankly, embarrased with the results I've had to sell thus far using a variety of papers. I've been tried all of the following: Epson Premium Luster Epson Premium SemiGloss Ilford Galerie Smooth Perl Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss Pictorico Gallery Glossy And the Kirkland paper is does better than all, in my opinion. Using QTR, "Premium Glossy Photo Paper" media source, Photo Black Ink, 1440 super, better speed, ordered dither, UC-EPhotoPaper-neutral curve at 100%, ink limit and gamma adjust at 0, I get the best looking, neutral black and white prints of the bunch. The blacks are deep and rich, and the tones very pleasing. Using the Epson drivers and the Epson 4000 "Premium SemiGloss" color profile I get very good color match to my profiled monitor (so good I wonder if I will even bother investing in a custom profile). The same print side by side an Epson Premium Luster and the only thing my customer will notice is the difference in finish (which is personal preference and likely a toss-up) and the almost complete lack of bronzing on the Kirkland paper. I wish I could say the same about Epson Prem. Luster. Last, compare the cost: Epson Premium Luster packet: 50 sheets 8.5x11 paper: $35.00 == $0.70 / sheet Kirkland Photo Paper packet: 125 sheets 8.5x11 paper: $18.99 == $0.15 / sheet There are two things I wish about this paper: 1) That it was archival. It says "professional" on the box, but I doubt that means it qualifies as archival, so I assume it isn't. Acidity? Lightfast? 2) That is was available in larger sizes / or on roll. Well, Costco is only about 20 minutes away and since I'm currently out of paper and Not working I think a short drive into the big city is in order. Of course as soon as I figure out how I like it on my Canon i960 I'll run out of ink LOL. Bill, > ... I am stunned. [Kirkland Signature Professional Glossy Inkjet >Photo Paper] provides, hands down, the best color and >black and white photos on glossy paper ... Yep, it's almost shocking. If Costco can sell this for $0.15/letter size sheet, it says we have a very good future ahead in terms of glossy photos, which, as you note, the public prefers. Getting the inksets good on glossy paper has been a major push of mine for the last year. I think these "barrier" papers have a huge potential. Resistance to light fading is virtually a done deal now. Gas fading and physical damage may be more serious, and I like the idea of encapsulating the carbon pigs between polyethylene and a lacquer (or acrylic) coating -- at least for the serious prints. Who has the room to store all the print in glass frames? For the quick and easy photos, getting rid of the bronzing and susceptibility to fingerprints in the dark areas without any spray is needed, and the Costco paper does well in those areas also. >... >There are two things I wish about this paper: >1) That it was archival... See my earlier post. My Abbey test pen says it's acid free paper on the inside. >Lightfast? Pigments are much less sensitive to paper variations than dyes. I will try to give it a fade test in the near future, but note that Epson Premium Semigloss, coated with PremierArt Print Shield tied with Epson UltraSmooth as the best I've tested. So, RC papers can be very good indeed. I suspect, however, that the Kirkland paper has OBAs in it. Those could be a negative, but EEM also has them and does well in fade tests. However, I'd like an OBA-free version of this paper. >2) That it was available in larger sizes / or on roll. I've been in touch with Costco, and the paper buyer is not interested in helping us there. Hopefully one of our usual inkjet resellers will convince Ilford to sell a similar paper. It's just a matte of time before this technology spreads. It's not Costco's, after all. It's Ilford and Epson from what I can see. The Costco paper is just the first to hit the market -- they couldn't care less about making their existing inventory obsolete. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

I hav e posted many times about the high quality of images on the costco glossy. I just showed a couple the 8x10s from thier wedding all on costco. (I am a musician, and only occasionally do weddings) The reaction is much better than any prints I've shown on photo rag without glass in front. I still prefer the tone of velvet fine art, but the costco has a really nice color if you let it be warm. The smoothness is really creamy, and deep. I still spray them if people will handle them. Well, I know color is not the focus of this group but I'm going to pickup a couple of packages of this paper tomorrow and I will let you know what I think about it with Canon BCI color inks. Finding out that it is so simular to the Epson glossy which I have tried and really liked is a big plus. If this paper is as good with MIS UT-2 it would sure make life easy around here same glossy for both printers. Then I just have to find the prefect Luster (gonna try the New Kodak Pro E surface) and then the Mattes. I will most likely use the Canon Matte as the cost is very reasonable. Although I did a couple of prints on EEM with the Canon in color and my neighbor who does printing for a Package lab (schools) was very impressed when I showed her. OK went out and bought a couple of packages of this paper today and first prints while looking great dead on have what appears to be a roller mark. Except it moves as I rotate the file.(the files are all slide scans) So it an't a roller mark it ain't in the file as I printed these same files yesterday on Epson Premium Glossy and they look perfect. I did the first ones through my Canon i960 (color printing of course) and then I tried printing the same files with my Epson 890 (still color as I'm not setup with B&W ink yet) And instead of one mark I get a whole bunch of them. They all run vertical smae direction as the print. NOW the weird thing I printed a file from my digital camera and no marks!!! These marks can only be seen with glare from my overhead lights across the print dead on they look beautiful. I'm going nuts here any ideas???? Mark W. Like the paper but think this is weird.

I had the exact same result. Very strange. I also created a color profile for this paper. It is very close to Epson Premium Glossy in gamut. Kirkland is able to achieve slightly deeper blacks and saturated colors in the 3/4 tones, but EpPremGloss does a little better in the lighter shades. Kirkland is a great bargain at 15 cents per sheet, but the marks are or some concern. I also agree that the bronzing is less than EpPremGloss. Lou, Can you possibly guess why the prints from a digital camera would not show these marks???? Could it be we are printing at to high of quality? My digital is only a 4Mp and I've been printing 6X9" prints. The last print I just did with the epson only shows the faintest of lines. So maybe it's some weird thing that will clear up. Gotta love these ink sucking problems. I bet the facotries have guys sitting around trying to build this into the system LOL Mark W. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ldina" <lbdina@c...> wrote:

Mark, I only printed one large scanned image. The original was a 4X5" color photo, and I scaled it up to 8X10 at 300 ppi, 42 bit during the scan. I processed the hell out of it in PS, but it looked tremendous on screen. Actually it looked great on the print too, with the very minor exception of the lines. I haven't tried a digital image yet, as I just bought the paper today. The lines are only noticeable in bright light when held to an angle, and I only see them in the darkets black areas. Kind of weird. They run the length of the print, so they are opposite the travel of the ink jet mechanism. Ahhhh....technology, what a joy! :O) Lou --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "awahlster" <awahlster@a...> wrote: > > > > > Lou, > Can you possibly guess why the prints from a digital camera would not > show these marks???? > > Could it be we are printing at to high of quality? Lou, I had one print with lines in dark areas, I changed the setting to uncheck "high speed," even though the paper's instructions said to use high speed. This took care of the problem, and it hasn't recurred. I haven't used high speed again. Sarah --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ldina" <lbdina@c...> wrote:

Sarah that did help on the Epson. The Canon i960 is WAY faster then the Epson not sure how I can adjust it any slower I have it on the longest ink dry setting now. It's always something. Lou, Which Kirkland version (Swiss., Japan, old Swiss.?) What printer and ink are you using? Are the lines dark or light ? How many lines? One area or the whole print? Are the lines verticle, in other words, the OPPOSITE of the print head travel? Scott: Japan. 2200, Epson UC with Photo Black Lines are only visible in black areas when held up to light, so it is a slight lightening. I'd say there are about 10-15 lines per inch. Lines are opposite print head travel. The "Japan" paper is pretty decent, I guess, but the one everyone is looking for is the new Swiss paper. Maybe that's reason Costco changed suppliers? I don't know, I'm only thinking outloud here. I can't comment on your "combo" because I'm using MIS EZN and the C86. The following was taken from Paul Roark's wed-site: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "The settings for the following papers are recommended starting points. You may be able to get a better match to the monitor with other adjustments. Kirkland Glossy Photo Paper Media Type is "Glossy Photo Paper." Sliders depend on which batch of Costco paper is used. This paper may convince you that the cheapest can also be the best. What is packaged in the box may differ. Look for the country of origin label on the back of the box. (1) The new Swiss-made paper is similar to Epson Premium Glossy Photo paper, but better. It has a bit less gloss and very little bronzing, which is rare for a glossy paper. I recommend slider settings of Contrast -12, Brightness +8. The paper base is buffered, making this a likely archival paper. The similar Epson Premium Glossy paper has been rated by Wilhelm as having a life of more than 200 years. An archival glossy paper for $0.15 per letter-size sheet is a major value. (2) Older Swiss-made paper that was still in some stores in October 2004: Sliders -- Contrast -12, Brightness -5. This version is very similar to Epson Glossy Photo Paper, below, but with a better dmax and just a hair more bronzing. The paper base is acidic; thus it is not archival. There was an "Epson" Logo on the back of the paper. (3) There was an interim Japanese-made version with the same product number. This was sold about November 2004. Set the sliders as follows: Contrast -12, Brightness at 0. This version is very similar to Epson Premium Glossy Photo paper. There is no logo on the back, and paper interior is buffered acid free." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scott --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ldina" <lbdina@c...> wrote: > > Scott: > > Japan. > > 2200, Epson UC with Photo Black > > Lines are only visible in black areas when held up to light, so it is > a slight lightening. Scott you addressed to Lou but since I kind off started the thread I'll answer for my part > > Which Kirkland version (Swiss., Japan, old Swiss.?) Swiss (I have no idea how to tell old from new Swiss this paper is Costco SKU #26352) > What printer and ink are you using? Canon i960 with Canon ink AND Epson 890 with Epson ink > Are the lines dark or light ? My lines are not really lines but more of a .250 wide scuff or very very light smear type look > How many lines? One area or the whole print? On the Canon the line appear only in one line approx. 1.25" from the right side of a 6 X 9" print centered on a 85. X 11" pc of paper On the Epson the first print had a lot of lines spaced about like the rollers but NOT exactly. Across the width of the print. On the Epson last two prints I made the line was down two one in the same basic position as the Canon prints but down to less then .125" wide and a little lighter in depth? > Are the lines verticle, in other words, the OPPOSITE of the print > head travel? Yes the lines are verticle and oppistite of the way the printers heads travel. The smears lines scuffs what ever are so light that you have to have a strong light source to see then and then only can they be seen while looking across the print like you were looking for bronzing (which there is none I can see. Hope this gives you an idea I tried scanning them but no way they would show on a monitor so that is a moot idea. Mark W. I really really like the look and if this clears up I'll be super happy with the paper so far.
