Refurbished printers

Refurbished printers

2005-02-19 by Jack Winberg

Hi John:

I sprang for a refurbished R200 from the Epson site - $77.00
delivered. THEN I found I could have obtained a NEW one for $99, and
kicked myself while I awaited delivery. The warranty on refurbs is VERY
poorly and vaguely spelled out.

Luckily, when the printer arrived, it was in perfect shape, and ALL of the
gadgets were supplied. There are warnings that there may be omissions. I
am MOST pleased with the little beast, MUCH higher quality prints than I
expected, quiet and quick in operation. I have not yet tried out the CD
printing, but the needed pieces were furnished.

I have heard of printers arriving non-functional, but apparently Epson
immediately sent out replacements. Were I to do it all again, I would
probably go for the new one, given the very small price difference.

I don't know if I was simply fortunate, or if most refurbished printers
arrive complete and functional.

Hope this helps.............. Jack

A friend of mine just bought a new 1280 thru Amazon - arrived DOA -
Dead on Arrival.

Epson wanted to charge his credit card $400 in order to send a
replacement overnight - a refurb one which my friend refused.

Next day - after several phone calls and hours on the phone - they
agreed to send him a new printer - 5 business days shipping.

A couple of years ago I had a run in with Epson - long story but after
3 months of getting nowhere, I told them it was either a brand new
printer - the new model I expected would come out very shortly - and
which they denied having any knowledge of at all - or I would turn the
matter over to my attorney as well as post it on all internet forums.

The next day they offered to send me a new printer of my choice - and
the week after that the 1280 came out - I then told them to ship one to
me and they did - overnight!..=*^)

When dealing with Epson you have to get past the first two levels in
order to get anything taken care of.

Christer: That $400 is never charged UNLESS you don't return the old
one. That's just to insure you don't try to get an extra printer for free

Christer: That certainly can be the case in sticky situations. I've
had to resort to that once. But again, they immediately did a warranty
replacement when I honestly told them I had damaged the printer by
trying to use a 3rd party flush cart that was missing the chip. It
seems to vary.

Nope - they were very explicit about that - if he wanted overnight
replacement they would charge his card the $400 and when they received
the dead one in return, they would credit him the $400 - if he shipped
the dead one to them first there would be no charge - but he could
expect 5 business days shipping after they received the dead one ...

Absolutely - my friend called several times and spoke to three
different reps - the first two were adamant - no new replacement - only
a refurb - the third one was the one who asked to call back the next
day as she wanted to try to get him a new replacement,

I guess Epson has changed in the last few months. When I got my last
warranty replacement the sent a new one overnight and I returned the
old one in the same box. And, I've never seen a credit card charge. In
fact I was busy for about ten days and took a while to do the swap and
return the old printer. Still no credit card charge / reversal.

I was told that my card WOULD be charged if I did not return the old
printer within a certain time period.
