16 bit greyscale / Ultrachrome / QTR

16 bit greyscale / Ultrachrome / QTR

Does anyone have any idea from practical experience if it makes any
difference at all if I send a 16 bit greyscale file over to the 9600 through QTR
rather than the 8 bit greyscale file? I usually scan and set up everthing in 16
bit then print out 8 bit. It is slow enough as it is and I don't want it any slower
for these larger size prints I have to do tomorrow unless it is a sure thing
super-ultra-pro-giclee improvement.

Nope. No difference really. I send 8bit to my printer. Make sure that
you flatten when you convert from 16bit to 8bit though. Otherwise it's
pointless. If you have blocked shadows to begin-with with noticeable
banding, keep it in 16bit. 8bit conversion will just worsen that
problem. (I've had to do 16bit with only 3 photos in the last two
years. It doesn't really come up much.)

take care, Walker

Re: [Digital BW] 16 bit greyscale / Ultrachrome / QTR

2005-03-17 by john dean

Thanks Walker. Sometime when I have time I will do a 16x20 test but I don't
imagine the printer can process that extra information anyway. However, I
assume each rip is different in the way it rips greyscale information.

Re: [Digital BW] 16 bit greyscale / Ultrachrome / QTR

2005-03-17 by Walker Blackwell

Yes and no. A "quadtone" setup relates to grey-scale bit-depth a bit
closer than UC inks (because of ink-tone combos vs color combos) and
I'm sure RIPs do interpret bitdepth differently. But when it gets down
to it, ink is a totally different world and the information interpreted
by the printer is really all the same. When using the RGB engine inside
the 9600 (QTR does, right?), the color information is stripped
slightly, but perceptual tonal "quality" is in the process of making a
good digital file and the difference between a 16bit and 8bit file
(after flattening!) is really nothing if you have a well linearized
system and good profiles. A bad profile takes WAY more information out
of your shadows/tonal "graduality" than a 16 to 8 bit conversion.

peace, Walker

QTR + Epson 10000

2005-03-17 by Ernst Dinkla

QTR shows my Epson 10000 as well in the printer choices. Both are on the
network so that's understandable. I'm wondering if that also means that
there's a driver in QTR for the 10000. I'm not interested in quad
printing on that machine (yet) but addressing the individual channels of
the MIS 7600 inkset may be handy for some experiments in cyan + black
printing as discussed. It will be handy anyway. Otherwise I will use the
other RIP but that is CMYK channel only.

Re: [Digital BW] 16 bit greyscale / Ultrachrome / QTR

2005-03-17 by Scott Graham

Actually all the Epson printers, and probably the other brands, use 8 bit for printing so it
makes no difference. If 16 bit goes to the printer it converts it to 8 bit.

I suppose it is possible that the conversion method varies slightly between the printer and
PS? but wouldn't think so.

In terms of 16 bit to 8 bit conversion I wouldn't think so either. owever I know
when you send a large file over to the 10K which is say 150 ppi or so the
printer software does a remarkable job of ripping that file to 1440 and the
output is a lot better than if you increased this file size in Photoshop to make a
larger print from this less than appropriate file size. The driver does do things
differently than Photoshop but exactly what and how that may apply to high bit
files, I haven't a clue. I belive there are different theories about this.

Actually you are wrong.

The data sent to the printer head is not eight bits. It is only one
bit. It tells the printer to print a dot or not print a dot. Some
RIPs that send this data to the print head do indeed use 12 bits
internally. In some printers you can choose from three dot sizes
which requires 2 bits.

Please know the facts, before posting.

Thank you,

Ray

Actually you are both right. But Ray lets be nice here and have respect for people. Scott
was referring to information sent to the Epson print driver is converted to 8-bit..even if
the file is 16-bit. Sure if you want to break it down to minutiae...yeah one-bit is sent to
the each nozzle to fire it or not...sheesh!

Dear Ray,

If we all knew the facts would there be a reason for this forum? From
my side this forum functions to educate. It does so through the
kindness of those who have great expertise and understanding and who
are prepared to share that knowledge. For this I am grateful.

Ray,

Are you sure?

If the printhead data is only one bit, how does the printer address
the variable dot size capability of the piezo head?

Last time I looked, years ago, the ESCP commands used 2 bit data when
the printer was in variable dot size mode. This would be data into
the printer from the driver, not into the driver from the application.
