Final info needed on Starter setup - Please Help!!

Final info needed on Starter setup - Please Help!!

2005-04-17 by Paul Prowse

Hi all,

I have been searching and searching to try and work out the best way to go
to start quality B&W printing I have made my decision mostly but I need a
little extra help...

My system will be an A3 printer, with to start with MIS Eboni black inks
with the OEM colour inks that come with the printer printing Black Only
until I can afford another A3 Printer to dedicate to colour (Probably an
Epson R1800 if it works out well for colour), then I will turn my origional
printer to a B&W outfit using MIS Ultratone Inks.

Here is my questions, if I put a cartridge of MIS Eboni Black into the
Printer (Epson) will it still work for colour images if I use the OEM inks
and this new black? Can I get a set of UT inks (6 or 7) and swap them over
when I need to print colour (will the carts keep or dry up out of the
printer)?

My final and most important question is which printer to go for, I am
stumped between 2 both Epson's; either the 2200 or the 1280 most people tell
me that there isn't much noticeable difference in the output between the 2,
is this correct? If it is then I will go for the 1280, I know that the dpi
of the 2200 is higher than that of the 1280 but as most of my images are
worked on at between 300 or 600 (onscreen) will I see any difference?

Thanks in advance - I'm almost there!!

Cheers

Paul

Paul,

Your plan is well thought out. I would recommend the 2200 as it will
give you slightly better BO output than the 1280. Another major
difference is speed. The 2200 is much, much faster. The 1280 is one
of the best printer for conversion to b/w inks. But it is showing
it's age in the speed department. Additionally, you will be able to
get very good b/w prints using QTR on the 2200 using just the
standard Epson inks.

Good luck.

Paul,

Some other important things about the 2200:

1) It has individual carts for each ink.

2) The color inks are pigment.

3) It is made for pigments and there seems to be fewer reports of
clogging problems.

4) It has a rear feeder for thicker papers.

As for using Eboni instead of MK with the UC color inks - a number of
people have mentioned doing it, and I haven't seen anyone say anything
bad about it.

I have one and it has been a very fine printer. It hardly ever clogs.
I think a 2200 is a good investment.

Regards,
Clayton

Clayton,

Thanks for your post, I think I¹m sold on the 2200. A couple of questions
arise from your post, forgive a newbie on some of these but my head is
spinning from all of the info I have consumed over the past couple of weeks!

Firstly you refer to Eboni instead of MK, is MK the ink that ships with the
Printer from Epson? And like wise are UC the inks that ship from Epson for
color?

I didn't know about the rear feeder which will mean I can use heavy Rag
Paper which is a bonus - thanks for that!

Could you let me know if I can swap the inks so say I brought a full set of
UT7 from MIS can I swap them around when I need to print color from the
Epson OEM's that ship with the printer and if so can you leave cartridges
out of the printer after you have started using them and they not dry up?
I'm guessing it's best not to do the above but I might (hope) be wrong.

Finally I am interested in experimenting with QTR, do you use it and is it
good for the 2200? Can you tell me what set up(s) you have for your 2200.

Many thanks

Paul

[Digital BW] Re: Final info needed on Starter setup - Please Help!!

2005-04-18 by Shilesh Jani

Paul,

MK (matte black) is the Epson ink for use with matte papers, It does
not ship with the printer. The black that ships with the printer is
PK (photo black) to be used with resin coated (RC) papers. UC inks
are the Epson "Ultra Chrome" PIGMENT inks which are standard with the
2200.

Epson MK is a warm black, and so is the Epson light black. So BO
prints with MK will be warm (but very nice). The Ebony ink from MIS
is a cool overall, and can appear warm depending on the paper (see
Clayton's web site for details).

I would suggest initially to load all Epson inks. Try the warm BO
method and the share-ware QTR for a number of tones. If you are
dissatisfied with them for any reason, then you can try other inks
like UT7. I will tell you from experience that IF QTR does not work
for you overall (i.e., contrast, punch, the inkjet b/w "look"), no
amount of ink swapping will work any better. The differences in the
print between QTR+UC and UT7 is relatively minor. So when you get a
new 2200 printer, the default advice is to go with the Epson inks,
play around with BO, QTR, and ask yourself if it is worth going the
more complicated route. If you find BO is your preferred method, by
all means go with MIS Ebony for a more neutral print. But if you
find QTR prints (cool, cool-selenium, warm, sepia, and many
combinations of two of the aforementioned) acceptable then you are
better off staying with Epson inks.

When you are playing around initially, use Epson Enhanced Matte paper
exclusively. It is readily available and inexpesive to boot.

Good luck.

Shilesh
