QT Rip and large black areas

2005-09-11 by mltphoto

I have been printing the same image with my Epsonn 2200 and now my 4000
using enhanced matte and the epson profiles. This image has a very
large solid black area and with the Quadtone Rip I am getting very
faint horizontal bars in the black area. I have done several test and
it is for sure the QT Rip that can't seem to lay down a solid black
area. What can I do to correct this, I realy like using the QT Rip over
the Epson Profile? Thanks, Matthew

Select the solid black and add 2% noise - it is a problem with Gimp

Where do you select solid black and add 2% noise? Its not an option
on my interface.

Got it, but I also noticed other areas in the black areas that were
like spots of light grey, will this fix that as well or is there
something else I need ot do. Thanks again, MAtthew--- In

I don't know what the spots of light grey are - are they in the original
image or only in the print? There is a known problem with QTR/Gimp with
large patches of solid pure black, eg a black background. The dither breaks
down and evenly spaced lines perpendicular to the path of the print head can
appear. Adding a little noise fixes this.

I am trying the noise solution right now, I have printed this file
for over 3 years now and the black night sky has always been perfect
until I used QT Rip. Let you know what happens in a few. Thanks,

Steve,

When you add noise, which type do you use, uniform or gaussian?

I just used Gaussian. But I have also noticed that the issue does not seem
to appear with the 4800 printer that I now use.

OK, I tried 2%, 4%, and both types of blur,it did reduce the lines by
at least 50%, and will probably not be noticed behind glass, but they
are still there. Anything else I can do? MAtthew

Re: QT Rip and large black areas

-Correction, I just made another print, I lightened my midtones
because I felt the QT Rip darkened my print a little, and the bar
lines came back even stronger, even after adding noise - Gaussian.
The only time I never got the lines is when I boosted the "Ink Limit
Adjustment" when printing. This made the QT Rip lay down more blank
ink in the shadows, which worked great in my black sky, but over all
lower contrast because it added extra black in all shadows. It
appears the QT Rip will not print black all the way black, sort of
when you try to lift extra detail in your shadows and you get that
weird noise, sometimes with lines. So what is next? I am getting
desperate

I think you need to post an image of the issue you are having. Are the
lines perpendicular to the print head or parallel?

I haven't had the specific trouble you're having, but you might try using
even more noise, then constructing a mask so that it only applies to the
black areas.

Have you tried printing out of QTR at the maxiumum resolution, say
1440 highest quality, or even 2880. I haven't had that problem either
with large black areas. I would certainly make sure your heads are
perfectly aligned too if you haven't already done so. The most common
reason for this kind of effect in my experience is either misaligned
heads or, even more common, a slightly clogged nozzle in one of the
black channels. That will do it every time.

John

The other thing I just remembered is your profile. It must be grey
gamma 2.2 greyscale. If you send an rgb file over there it wouldn't
work right.

An RGB file is converted on the fly so no problem there. As I said, I think
we need to see the problem you are having. Perhaps you can post a scan of
the issue on the web where we can take a look.

Converted on the fly to what? If your Mac greyscale workspace is 1.8
then that's not accurate. But he does need to post a jpeg.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: QT Rip and large black areas

Only file numbers are sent to QTR - no profile. A colour RGB image is
converted (not in the profile sense) to greyscale using the default R%, G%
and B% (Roy can tell us what these are if need be). So an RGB image will
still print ok and in fact a grey RGB image where R=G=B is no different from
sending a greyscale - the same file numbers are still processed. The issue
here has nothing to do with RGB vs greyscale and nothing to do with
profiles. It would appear to be a dither, print head alignment or even a
banding issue...
