RE: [Fairlight-CMI] Fairlight Serial numbers

Speaking of Fairlight Serial numbers and the original owners, did anyone ever supply this list? I know it's been mentioned many a time and I recall Peter Wielk saying he had all the original purchase details 9not sure if this was just for the SIII), but did we ever receive it?

Cheers,
Peter

Most likely they are manufactured on january 5 1980 and february 10 1980.
There must be quite a few, more than 50.

Black sounds like a refurbished (repainted) one.
Tan sounds about right for a series I, II and IIx keyboard.

They can all be used for I,II and IIx. They are more or less identical.

I would presume more than 50 are still around.

Harald.

Hi peter,

I asked for this several times, but no, I don't think it was revealed.

Best regards,
Harald.

I can tell you where CMI 218 (Series III) went - I still have it. Think either 217 or 219 went to Lindsey Buckingham...

It would be interesting to know the original owners and the history if
there is a list...with the exception of Big Al's III and IIx! It's
like seeing pictures of abused pets.
Did Depeche Mode use a CMI on "Behind the wheel"? Sounds too posh to
be an Emax....and since it's not a dull sound it can't be an EII!

You're right about the EIII. I have the keyboard version as well.
One of my all time favs besides the IIx. Maybe some Sequential folks
started working for E-mu then!!! The Studio 440 is the MG of the
sampler world. (No offense to MG owners..I'm fixing a friends) The
EII is my least favorite of the older E-mu's. I prefer the Emax I.
I'm still betting it's Fairlight on that Depeche track!:-)

I'm thinking it probably was an EII. It's just a
guess, though.

I have an EII+ (as well as a CMI IIx) and I've always
thought that it kicks the crap out of the CMI
sample-quality wise. I mean, I love my Fairlight and
all but I think the EII is by far the best sounding
8-bit sampler. MUCH longer sample time too. Too bad
the file handling's so wretched.

Just my opinion, of course. :-)

EMU was notorious for rushing products to the market early but they
were by no means the only culprit. Ensoniq, Kurzweil, Sequential,
and
most other smaller manufacturers were left with little choice because
they did not have the capital necessary to finalize R&D and work out
all the bugs before marketing the product. It sucked for those of us
who spent thousands of dollars on their products only to buy a
headache, but in the end it was often remedied. My EII+ and EIII had
serious issues, mostly software related, but eventually they were
fixed
and I was happy with the instruments.

I've owned my Studio 440 since it was first introduced and have never
had a single issue with it. Today its still my primary drum machine
and sequencer and in mint condition. Other Studio 440's I have used
have also been rock solid so I'm not sure why you equate the Studio
440 to an MG?

With any fine instrument treat it well and it should last a long time
and perform as expected. I can't count the number of synths, drum
machines, and keyboards I've seen people beat to hell and expect them
to work. Maybe that method works for others but I prefer to keep my
instruments as new.

MG's and 440's

2005-08-08 by lairdfairlight

My apologies to MG owners and Sequential gear owners. Being a mechanic
and an electronics tech I had no right to make that comparison. :-)
What I meant to say is that if I ever have an important show to play I
hope I'm traveling there in an MGB and will only be using 'Old
faithful' a studio 440 to play it.
Easy now...just kidding around!
