the Right System

the Right System

2007-10-29 by One Westi

Hello to all members, this is Pasha. I will soon purchase a new Apple system & I need some feed back as to which unit will smoothly run Logic Pro Studio 8.
Unfortunately, Mac Pro will be out of budget for now. Here are my choices

1. iMac Integrated CPU/24"-Screen Mac Computer with 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 1GB Memory, 320GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT
w/128MB Memory, Keyboard, Mouse, and Software Suite + 2GB more of RAM $1,799.00

                                                                          or

2. Mac Book Pro 15" Notebook Computer with 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 120GB Hard Drive, 2GB Ram & 15" Wide screen Display $1,999.00.

*** Also what can this unit handle - 13" MacBook 2.16GHz w/ Intel 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, 1GB RAM, 120GB Hard Drive, & SuperDrive - White $1,299.00

       I am also using a MOTU 828MKII w/ Reason 3, Ableton Live6, Trilogy, a plethora of plug-ins, MPC 2000XL Studio +, Trinity TR-Rack, TLM 103,
Aphex 230 Master Voice Channel [next upgrade to a Universal Audio LA-610 or SSL XLogic Alpha Channel w/ a TLM49 or AKG 414BXLII]

Please give me feedback on the Right System

Seriously, between those two, the biggest factor to consider is
whether you'd like a big machine on your desk, or a smaller machine
you can lug around. If you are going to want to work in one place, a
bigger screen is an advantage, and the drive will be bigger and
faster on the iMac, etc. But for some people, especially if you
travel a bit, and do field recording and such, the difference in
productivity can be worth every bit of the reduced peak performance.
For other people, who prefer to work in a set work space with all
their other musical stuff at hand, a laptop wouldn't make any
difference and an imac is a better choice. You are in a better
position to judge how it will work for you than anyone on this list.

	Cheers

I agree with David. They both will work fine, and I doubt you would
be able to tell the difference performance-wise doing music. Also,
they both can be set up for dual monitor, and can run really big
external fw drives, which are two of the big considerations I have
regarding my music. It comes down to "Do you want a laptop or a
desktop?"

You can actually lug around the Imacs. The large screen is really useful in
working on Logic. They even sell shoulder bags where you can port around a 20"
imac - the only limitation being that its slightly heavier, and you have to
plug it in the wall whereever you go. I lugged mine to some coffee shops and to
a conference, and it worked fine in that regard.

However, I find it bogs down fairly easily in Garage Band (2). I am not sure
if Garageband is extremely inefficient, but I suspect that there may be some
other issues like the buss speed, and processors, or Level 2 or 3 cache that
speed up a mac pro or Mac G5 tower.

I just bought a new Mac Pro (2x2x2.6) and I am not all that impressed with
the speed. I think I would recommend getting a used G5 tower 2x2ghz, maybe for
$800 or so used. Unless you absolutely need portability. You can also put a
slew of USB and Firewire connectors - or additional PCI boards, and multiple hard
drives.

Imacs allow "dual monitors" but only mirror mode (same content on both
screens - which is basically useless). Although someone told me there is a shareware
program that gets around this limitation. The Macbooks will run real dual
monitors - but one being attached to the laptop does not allow for convenient
monitor placement side by side.

Another advantage of the G5 and Mac Pro towers is that you can run FW800
rather than FW400, if you are going to run an external drive.

You can run FW800 as well as 400 on a MacBook Pro.

And I find the dual monitor setup incredibly useful. I have the
laptop on an Allsop stand, with a Samsung monitor right next to it. A
nice side-by-side arrangement.

Not so. I have an iMac core duo and the 2nd monitor functions just
like it does on my laptop and, AFAIK, all Macs.

iMacs used to have the "mirror only" limitation, but that was lifted
before they went to Intel processors. iBooks had this limitation was well.

I own a 2 year old 20" Imac G5/2.0ghz, and I was told, I read, and I have
found from trying it, that the second monitor only mirrors the main monitor - its
not possible to have side-by-side monitors for more space. My brother also
has the 17" version and found the same thing, although he found a shareware
program that seems to allow a 2nd monitor non-mirrored.

There is a shareware app callee Spinning Doctor (I think) that allows different content (I was JUST looking at the .dmg on my Powerbook this morning). I will upload later if I can remember....
