K7s a little flat

K7s a little flat

2006-05-13 by KevinG

I've just installed the K7 inks in my 2200. I'm running a few test
prints and I'm generally pleased but they seem flat. I hadn't
noticed this with the UC inks where the match to the calibrated
screen was generally very good.

It is, however a new flat panel ( apple cinema ) screen and I may not
have looked that closely at the other prints before installing the K7
inks.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I believe that the Cone folks designed the K7's to provide a long, smooth tonal gradation.
You can always add contrast in a situation of that sort. I've made prints that are quite
contrasty with the K7's; it's just a matter of working on the file while viewing through the ICC
profile, either the generic one that comes with the QTR download, or one you've made
yourself with the ICC creation tools that are included in the download.

Kevin

If you haven't tried the QTR Gray Lab working space, you might try
that. I get a great print to screen match using it as my work/print
space on a 2200.

I'll take it further. Black and white prints from Qimage often appear flat to my eye when printed using the Epson R2400 and K3 inks compared to what I see on the screen and what I get when printing directly from Photoshop.

My system is fully profiled and I'm pretty sure that the correct profiles are in place and that the printer is set the same in both situations.

I, too, would like to hear some ideas.

Dave.

OK. Thanks.

All of the files are currently in a grey gamma 2.2. I assume the
process to go throught is to 'convert to profile' to the QTR grey lab
and then when printing to use the qtr grey matte a the print space
( with black point compression ? ).

That has produced better but not perfect results.

Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and buy an eye one and make icc
profiles. I have one question about the eye-one products. I assume
that all I need to make the B&W icc profiles is the measuring
device. Is this true or do I need to purchase one of the Eye-One
packages ( design, photo, proof etc )?

I vote for PrintFIX PRO by ColorVision - third the price of Eye-One:

http://www.colorvision.com/profis/profis_view.jsp?id=521

Been using it with QTR and InkJetControl. Builds excellent color profiles too! If you shop
around you can find it for under $400.00....

Just went to eBay, one vendor is selling it for $366.04...what an odd number!

Do a search on eBay for: PrintFIX PRO Datacolor 1005

The Suite adds the Sypder2Pro for the monitor...same vendor has it for $445.99.

Search for: PrintFIX PRO Suite w/Spyder2

Thanks John. I like the sound of 1/3 the price. Are the equivalent
instruments in terms or accuracy and usability for the purpose of
creating B&W icc profiles?

Re: K7s a little flat

I know with my setup the profile that is recommended to send to QTR is
NOT GG 2.2 but rather Roy's profile named QTR GREY MATTE PAPER. It is
installed in Color Sync folder automatically when using installing the
software. I have really nice blacks using this, with custom curves and
without. But then I'm on a larger printer and with 6 channels not 7.
You should try this and make sure you max black areas read 0 in
greyscale photoshop reading. My 0 is really black, I love it and need
no more.

You really should make a custom curve for a particular paper though
for best results in achieving the best subtlety.

If all else fails you may try turning off all the QTR curve management
by choosing QTR RAW as the curve to see what that does.

I was in the same dilemma as you and was looking at the Eye-One to tweak my B+W. Then
PrintFIX PRO came along and I tried it....works great. It's at least as accruate as the Eye-
One.

Here's some reviews:

http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/Printfix%20Pro.shtml

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/printfix_pro.html

I'd say the only negitive thing about it is that it's a one-click-per-patch reader... It's only
an issue for making color profiles that have a 200+ or 700+ patch target. Unlike the Eye-
One where you move the spectro across the row to read - with the PrintFIX spectro you
need to click the spectro once for each patch. BUT if you are on a Mac I wrote an
AppleScript to automatictaly read each row.

http://homepage.mac.com/johnvito/printfix_applescript/printfix_pro_applescript.html

If on Windows there is a program called HotKeys that can do the same.
