Guys,

I have a laptop 486-Dx50 with windows 95 but without a sound card. Can I still use it on my Disklavier? I have installed dkvutils and put all my eseq files in the hard drive. If yes, can anybody help me with the procedure in setting it up to the disklavier. I also have a midi cable. Thanks for any help.

Anybody,
I have a disklavier that plays only Eseq files. Recently, I have found a 486-dx50 laptop with windows95 but have no sound card in it. Can I use it with my disklavier even without a sound card? I have installed dkvutils program and copy all my eseq files in the hard drive. I try to install cakewalk but won't run because there is no sound card. If I can use the laptop to play my disklavier from the hard drive, can anyone help me with the procedure in setting it up. By the way, I have a midi cable too. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Allan,

Yes, you can play your DKV using your laptop. (This task does not
require a high performance machine at all.) You will need to get an
external MIDI interface for your laptop. It doesn't sound as though
your older laptop would have a USB interface, so you will probably want
a 1 X 1 MIDI interface such as a Midiman Portman PC/P MIDI Interface
which connects to your computer's parallel port. Once the interface is
installed, Cakewalk will no longer complain about the lack of a soundcard.

You will need to convert E-SEQ files to MIDI in order to play them using
Cakewalk as a sequencer. You can convert E-SEQ files to SMF1 (MIDI)
using the Giebler Utilities (www.giebler.com).

There is not much to setting it all up. Connect the laptop's MIDI
output to the DKV's MIDI input. Set Cakewalk so that the piano part of
the file is directed to channel #1 and set the the DKV's MIDI input for
channel #1. If the file you are playing also has continous pedal data
directed to channel #3, set the DKV's MIDI Input instead to CH=HP.

Even though your Disklavier only plays ESEQ files from floppy disks, it will
play standard MIDI files from a laptop computer. You do not need a
soundcard to do this, however, you do need a MIDI interface - with either a
parallel or serial port to connect to your laptop. You only need one MIDI
cable that connects from the MIDI OUT on the interface to the MIDI IN on
your DKV.

You will want to acquire a MIDI jukebox player. You can get one for cheap
or free at www.musicsharewaremachine.com I believe the VanBasco Karaoke
player will do this for free - available in the dkutils which is different
from the dkvutil.

You will need to convert the ESEQ files to MIDI files first to put them into
the jukebox program.

Thanks for your help. I do have a USB port at the back of my laptop, is it the same as the USB interface you are referring to?

Allan,

You might consider a MIDISPORT 1X1 made by MidiMan. It does require
Windows 98. It uses the USB port of your laptop which powers the
interface, so that you would not need to deal with a "wall-wart" power
supply.

Re: [disklavier] Laptop

2003-04-09 by Carol Beigel

The problem with a laptop running Windows 95 is that the operating system
does not support USB even though there may be a USB port on the laptop.
Also, with laptops that old, there is a power problem using the USB port.
Usually, one has to go out and buy a powered USB hub to get enough power to
run such a device.

It is much simpler to buy a MIDI interface that has EITHER a parallel or
serial port.

Re: [disklavier] Laptop

2003-04-09 by Robert Welcyng

Allan,

You will need the MIDI interface if you wish to drive the DKV and/or the
MU-90 Tone Generator from your laptop using a sequencer such as
Cakewalk. Think of the tone generator as another instrument in parallel
with the DKV.

Carol has a good point that you may wish to get a MIDI interface such as
a Midiman Portman PC/P MIDI Interface or a Roland interface that
attaches to your computer's parallel port. That would avoid the risk of
the USB port (on your older model laptop) not being able to supply
sufficient power. You would also be able to stay with Win 95. A
parallel port is likely to be a little less fuss getting installed than
a serial port. A non-USB interface will need to be powered by a wall-wart.

Re: [disklavier] Laptop

2003-04-11 by Carol Beigel

You still need a MIDI interface. Since your laptop runs Windows 95, this
does not support USB. Therefore, buy a MIDI interface that is either for a
serial or a parallel port. You might need one with 2 MIDI OUTS - one for
the Disklavier, and one for the tone generator. Otherwise, I think you just
run a MIDI cable from the interface to the tone generator, and another cable
from the MIDI pass thru to the DKV.

Laptop

2003-06-03 by Allan Zalamea

Everyone,

Finally I am now using a laptop for my Disklavier using midi interface. I only have one question- Why is it that whenever I stop the play in Vanbasco Player my piano stops with a continous humming sound and the keys of the piano is deppressed, looks like the piano hungs? but when I play it again it plays normal. Will the deppressed keys bad for the solenoid or disklavier itself? Pls help.

Allan,

I'm glad you got things working, did any of my "wordy" suggestions
help or did it just confuse you?

As far as the MIDI tone and the keys being pressed...

I've run into this problem before. I believe it has something to do
with the fact that your stopping the MIDI stream before it can send
the "note off" information.

When you play through the disklavier, it automatically does a reset
when you stop. What I've done is set up a midi file that is only a
reset. When you stop a MIDI file, if this happens you can quickly
send the reset file to shut everything down. You may be able to
configure your MIDI editor to send out a reset when you interrupt
playback.

When you start again you said it plays fine. Most MIDI sequences
reset everything before the song begins to play, this is probably why
it works.

Hope this helps

Brian,

Thanks for all your help. Actually my 486 laptop didn't work probably because it doesn't have a sound card. It register on my disklavier as "Midi input/outputData error". I tried to use a newer laptop with Pentium 4 and it works but with minor problem I have stated. What do you mean by setting up a midi file that is only a reset? How do I configure my midi editor to send out a reset? Sorry but I am not to familiar with this subject. Hope you can help. Thanks again.

Allan,

I'm not sure what MIDI package your using. I have Cakewalk. The
help in cakewalk explains it better (and in less words) than I can.
Whatever package your using should have an equivalent "all notes off"
command (whether they call in reset, or something else). Here's the
text from the cakewalk help...

"Handling Stuck Notes

Under MIDI, the events that turn notes on are separate from the
events that stop notes from playing. Normally, when you stop
playback, Cakewalk attempts to turn off all notes that are still
playing. Depending on how your equipment is configured, it's possible
for notes to get stuck in the "on" position. The Realtime-Reset
command stops all notes from playing.

This may be insufficient for some older synthesizers. If so, set
PanicStrength=1 in the [WINCAKE] section of CAKEWALK.INI. To do so,
you may use Options-Initialization File. Reset will send a note-off
message for every note on every channel of every port. This makes
Reset much slower but will resolve the problem"

Brian,

I don,t know what midi package you are refering to but this is what I have done:

1. I copied all my disklavier floppy to hard disk and convert it to midi files using the dkvutils eseq2mid program.

2. Then load the midi files to the playlist of my vanbasco player and play it.

3. I didn't edit any midi files converted by the dkvutils. I just renamed it.

Sorry if I don't know what you have instructed me to do with midi configuration. Perhaps if you can give me step by step instruction of what to do with my midi files so that it won't have a stuck note problem when I play it. Thank you for your patience in my ignorance on yhis matter.

Re: Laptop

Allan,

Sorry for the confusion, I was trying not to be as "verbose" as I
was on the previous replies, I'll try again.

First, there isn't anything you can do to your MIDI files to stop
this problem. MIDI sends a "Note ON" command which is followed up
later on with a "Note OFF" command. What is happening is that you
are stopping the playback after the "Note ON" command is sent but
before the "Note OFF" can be sent, which leaves the note on.

Second part, I use Cakewalk to edit and play back my MIDI files.
The previous post stated that when you stop the playback Cakewalk
sends a "Note Off" command for all notes that are playing. Here's
the important part, this is a function of the player and not the MIDI
file.

Last part, when I was talking about the MIDI editor I meant your
MIDI player (for me they are one and the same, sorry for the
confusion). I'm not very familiar with the vanBasco player, but I
looked it up. There's not a lot of information on line about the
product, but I did find this little bit about "hanging notes". If
this doesn't answer your question then maybe you could ask vanBasco
tech support if there is any way the player could send a "Note Off"
for any notes that are playing if you stop a song in the middle.

Here is the "hanging note" text from the vanBasco site, hope this
helps...

Problem: I experience hanging notes and/or the player occasionally
freezes and I have to reboot my computer.

Solution: You should first check if the problems occur with all MIDI
files, or just particular ones. For instance, does the problem occur
with the sample files that are included with the player? If so,
please do the following: try changing the output device in the setup
dialog of vanBasco's Karaoke Player. To do that, click the note
button in the top-left corner in the main program window and
choose "Setup...". From the drop-down box labeled "Output Device",
choose "MIDI Mapper" and select "Windows" as reset mode. In addition,
make sure that the SYSEX delay is set to 0, and also try disabling
the option "Start from first note" and "Skip Redundant Data".

Brian,

You are a great help. I will follow your instructions with vanbasco config. If it doesn.t work I will try to do it in cakewalk. Actually I have a cakewalk but not familiar with the program so I used vanbasco which is much simplier. I will update you with my progress. Thanks again.

Play Disklavier through Laptop Computer

2003-07-28 by yg ao

I'm trying to make the Disklavier play a sound on the
computer. Here is what I have:

Disklavier MX1Z (Mark II XG)
Laptop Dell C610 Window 2000
Midisport Uno 1X1 UBS (Cakewalk Express)

I've connected Laptop-to-USB midisport, midi
out-to-MIDI In on DKC500RW XG. What kind of setting
do I have to make on the Disklavier control unit in
order for the piano to play a computer midi file? Can
someone please walk me through? Any advice is highly
appreciated.

The instructions for Receiving Data From A MIDI Sequencer are in the
Advanced Owners manual that came with your Disklavier - my dark red manual
has it on page 72. Basically, the piano keys play whatever is on Channels 1
or 2 of the MIDI file unless you change the settings. You press the
Function button and put the cursor on Piano Part and follow the prompts. To
be sure that all tracks on the MIDI file play the piano, I use the gnmidi
utility software and simple push a single button "prepare program for
Pianodisc". This creates a MIDI 0 file that puts all the tracks on Channel
1.

If you want the Disklavier to play a sound on the computer, you also need to
add an additional MIDI cable between the MIDI OUT on the DKV to the MIDI IN
on your computer interface.

Carol, Thank you. In my mind, making computer to play
DKV is none trivial thing. So I always thought there
are something else there I didn\ufffdt do it right. And I
knew you and others out there always offers great
help. Since it didn\ufffdt work right I used an
oscilloscope to check out the Midisport and realized I
made a mistake. On the Midisport midi out, it said
"to midi out." So I thought that is the midi out and
connected to the DKV\ufffds midi in. What a thoughtful
thinking! It is simple than I thought. Thank God it
works great now! I enjoyed it and thank you all for
your help.
