some more questions by possible MD owner

2003-08-18 by fotofono

thanks to everyone who replied in my previous post.
i have some more questions though:

.when playing back a pattern, can you simultaneously trigger
additional notes from an external sequencer or midi keyboard?

.does the MD receive program change for selecting kits?
do the kits load instantly or do you wait for some time?

.on startup, is the MD as it was when shut down?(global setup, and
the kit last used, or do you have to load a kit each time you
startup?)

.when triggering patterns via midi notes, does the MD respond
instantly? (like triggering a sample)or do you have latency?

.does it sync to MTC? or only midi clocks ?

.are the lfo 's fast enough to be used on very short percussion
sounds? or are they useable only on sounds with a big decay?

thanks in advance for anyone who answers!
be good.

yes, no problem.

Hmm, never tried it, don't know if it's possible either.....

Yes. But kit settings are as last saved.(i think...)
Save a lot, that's the key.
When you accidently change pattern with a different kit youre changes
are lost forever! Elektron has confirmed this.

Yes, so you can start patterns or retrigger them whenever you want
with no apperent latency.
But!! I tried it and i got double first notes when triggering the
same pattern at the beginning of a measure. I haven't found a
solution for this and Elektron didn't or couldn't help me with this
one.

Yes, very fast. Not very, very slow (to bad)

On tip from a very happy user:
Use the machine's internal sequencer synced to whatever.
It's at it's best then.
The parameter locks are very powerfull!!!
Just buy it, after some time you'll be hooked.
I know some people who sold their MD after some time just because
they didn't spend enough time exploring the true power of this
machine.

I don't believe you can load kits via a MIDI message; however, you
can change patterns, and in Extended mode patterns are tied to a
kit. I use this feature very often. The new pattern loads
immediately when the current pattern is done playing, with absolutely
no latency between them.

The MD responds to standard program change messages on its base
channel, only. (Using these is actually the fastest way to flip through a
bunch of kits, if, say, you've forgotten what that kit has the BD you're
looking for).

Someone said if you changed the kit without saving, you lose what you
didn't save. Not true. Use the buffer save. It is the first in the
kit load menu.

The lfos are quite fast. They made it as a drum machine foremost.
Most of the parameters are for short envelopes. Did we forget to
mention you can use the lfos on other gear?

Someone said how they feel sad for the people who dismiss the thing.
I'm just figuring out the parameters in the master effects section. I
had it for about a year.

someone also said that if you don't save and you shutdown, then your
kit settings are lost; which is untrue. they're *only* lost if you
change kits before saving any changes. but as you said, they can still
be restored from the buffer save (undo kit).

in short...when you power it up, the MD is *exactly* like you left it
before you shut it down (which I think was the original question).

yes, but they're syncable to the sequencer; which is nice :-)

but it still functions well as a synth + general purpose electronic
fantastic noise maker.

I really need to get into those as well. I've explored the reverb and
delay engines in depth (and with a large smile on my face) and I now
use the EQ instead of external EQ. but I haven't done anything with
the compressor yet; mainly because I don't know anything about
compressors :-)

Sidstation adapter?

2003-08-19 by V Silly

Hi folks,
I have just purchased a used Sidstation which is currently on its way
to me.

The former owner made the comment that he bought a new Radioshack
adapter for it because the Elektron adapters were not good quality and
caused crackling. Is this true? Or is he just making an excuse for the
non-original adapter?

Does Elektron sell the Sidstation adapters separately? I couldn't find
them on the web site.

Thanks!
-V

not quite so in my experience. I have found that if I
shut it down while in pattern mode, then what you say
is true... but if I shut it down while in song mode,
then it reboots in pattern mode, set to pattern A01.

Ahhh...OK. I usually don't work in song mode; so I forgot to consider
this case when I made my statement. that's interesting that it doest
that, though.

Re: Sidstation adapter?

When Elektron first sold the SidStation they didn't have a 115Vac adapter for the USA so you had to buy your own here. I have a Radio-Shack adapter on mine that is rated at 800mA, twice the current rating of the factory unit. It works fine. I wouldn't worry about power adapters; just use one with a filtered output. They're all made in China so units don't vary too much. One with at least a 400mA rating is recommended.

too bad :-P

the compressor on the MD will make your beats "punch" trough a mix and
give consistency to hats and snares.
try it with short attack, long release, hard knee, hp set so that the
bd doesn't influence the compressor.

adjust the gain parameter to compensate for the loss of volume.

you won't regret it :-)
