Machinedrum and Logic

Machinedrum and Logic

2003-09-12 by dogead2000

Okay, so iv'e got my new Machinedrum and spent many hours programming
beats using the onboard sequencer.
Now what i want to do is start using it with logic but im not sure
how to edit the parameters from Logic on my Mac, i should add that
this is my first bit of midi hardware (peviously iv'e been using
software plugins) so im abit green on the subject.
Im not asking for a long winded description telling me exactly what
to do, just a few pointers to get me going.
Any advice much appreciated.
P.S. Im using Logic in OSX if this is relevant.

First: Use of the internal sequencer with parameter locks is what
makes the MD so special.

But if you still want to sequence in logic with all parameters you
should first reserve 4 midi channels. (1 base channel + 3 following
channels)
You can record the controllers just as notes by turning the knobs.
Track 1/4 to base channel (say 10)
Track 5/8 to base channel + 1 (= 11)
etc.....
Notes are all triggered from all the four channels btw.

You can also make youre own mixermap in the environment.
Just by placing new sliders and setting them to CC with the right
parameters and channel. (see manual for all the parameters)
then you can control all the parameters from the mixermap en record
it as mixer automation.
Maybe you can search the internet for this mixermap, sometimes they
are already made by someone and shared.

Succes,
Grtz. Ronald.

Do you not find theres a slight delay in playback when the MD is used
as a slave to logic, this is the reason why i was going to try using
it as a sound module triggerd by logic/

I wouldn't know because i don't use the MD slaved to my PC.
But, the MD is in perfect sync with other gear as far as I tested it.
As a workaround for this kind of problems Logic offers a feature to
alter the midi out clock (for external gear)
You can add or substract a couple of clock ticks.
This way I once solved the known midi timing bug of a Korg ES-1.
(15ms!)
So you should get it right also this way.

My MD is synced to Logic.
I trigger patterns on the MD with Logic: this way I can work on the
song arrangement within Logic and still use parameter locks on the MD.
I can also record CCs in Logic: just hit record and twist the MD knobs:
this lets me add more complex and longer variations, something that you
can't do with parameter locks.

I had no need for a mixermap; anyway I remember that I have seen one on
the net.

Trigger the patterns in logic...how do you do this?

Go in the global menu of the md, then midi -> map editor
There you can choose which key triggers which pattern.

Have fun :-)

check out "mapppings" in the global menu section of the manual. but to
paraphrase, you can assign a specific note to each pattern. when you
send that note to the MD's base channel, it will trigger the assigned
pattern.

This is something I should really try out. I don't use an external sequencer. Does it
act similar to a sampler triggering a drum loop? I was wondering about how the
tempo works. I guess you could alter the tempo while you're at it.

Yes, it acts like a sampler triggering a loop.
Tempo works well - no latency issues with MD and Logic.
Sometimes a pattern gets triggered twice on start: that's because the
MD internal sequencer isn't in "stop" or something else. Anyway
pressing play and then stop fixes this.

I bet you can alter the tempo if you slave the MD and make tempo
variations in Logic.

Now, I'd really like to see this simple feature implemented in the next
MD os update:
- muting should be available (and send data) via midi!
This is the only drawback in my setup (MD synced to Logic): I have to
create a new pattern if I want to mute a track - muting can't be
recorded in the external sequencer.
Does anyone else need this?
