EIII harddisk boot problem

EIII harddisk boot problem

2003-02-13 by brian_ronn <brian_ronn@...>

I have the OS2.42 boot disc (the latest OS) for the EIII. I've set
the scsi id this way: floppy id=0, hd=1 and EIII=6 but the EIII
won't boot from the ST51080N hd. I have also formattet the hd and
copyed the software from diskette to hd, but the EIII won't boot
from the hd only from floppy. I can access banks on the hd and
access any module via the frontpanel but just won't boot.

Do you know the jumper settings on the Seagate ST51080N hd?

I'm thinking about putting the hd to an external hd-case and I would
want to disconnect the power of the center ventilator which cools
the hd (because of the noise), would you advise me not to disconnet
the ventilator maybe because of the heat level on the pcb boards?

Thanx

Brian

Hi There
do not put the disk in the floppy drive so it will search for the one on the HD.
Cheers

The bootrom version on my EIII is 1.0. Can that be the problem?

Re: [emax] Re: EIII harddisk boot problem

2003-02-17 by John Silveria

I think this can be the same problem the Emax II has with slow SCSI devices. There is a
chance at power up the drive is not up and spinning yet by the time the EIII looks to it for
the OS. On the Emax II this can be solved by assigning it to boot from a different SCSI
ID then waiting for it to cycle around back to the ID of the HD. EG: if the internal hard
drive is SCSI #1 tell it to boot from SCSI #3 and when that fails it will look through the
SCSI chain for another device to boot from and when it gets to SCSI #1 the hard drive
will be ready to go. This seemed to be a common problem with older Maxtor hard drives.

Hi again,
Try a new install and set the HD to ID 01. Tell the EIII to look ID 01 on bootup.
Hope this helps.

Re: EIII harddisk boot problem

2003-02-18 by brian_ronn <brian_ronn@...>

I've tried to set the HD to ID 1 and 4 without any boot success. When
I set the ID to 1 or 4 the EIII waits 3 or 4 times longer before it
proceds scanning the scsi chain. I've tried with 2 different Seagate
ST51080N hd's which should work with the keyboard, but not in my
case. I then tried to install one of the ST51080N disks in a EIIIx
(modul) with success. In the EIIIx the hd boots as it should.

When I insert the original 43 Mb hd in the EIII the EIII will boot.

I can't figure this out.....

Thanx for helping out

Brian

Re: [emax] Re: EIII harddisk boot problem

2003-02-18 by Colin Ross

Hi Brian
Did you change the jumper settings?. I will have to check if there's a auto detect on the EIII and get back to you. Have you tried contacting Rob on the Emu Archive site? He's the man who can really guide you.
Cheers,

Colin

  Brian

Re: EIII harddisk boot problem

2003-02-21 by brian_ronn <brian_ronn@...>

Hi Colin

Thanks to you and everybody else who is trying to help me out here.

Yes, I've changed the jumpersettings on the hd so that the EIII can
see that the scsi id on the drive has changed. I can also see when
the EIII scans through from 0 to 7 and that the id on the hd has
changed.

I've been e-mail corresponding with the very helpfull and skilled
guy Rob from emulatorarchive along with you in this group. we
haven't come up with anything concrete yet but we are now focusing
on the boot rom version 1.0. Maybe a boot rom version 2.0 will help
but that mean that 2 new proms are going to be programed. That's for
the moment too hardcore for me.

I've been ill for a couple of days, that's why I haven't been
replying. But now I'm fit for fight again :)

Best regards

Brian
