[EXS] Emperor vs. Old Lady

[EXS] Emperor vs. Old Lady

2004-11-23 by james page

As you have probably already seen, Michiel Post is now
offering the Emperor for $80. As someone who purchased
the Old Lady in the recent group buy, I'm wondering
how these 2 pianos compare. Anyone care to chime in?
Thanks, JP

IMHO the Emperor is brighter, and a bit more "brittle" to my ears. (Whether
this is a positive or negative attribute is up to the listener.) I think the
Old Lady has more body to it, and so I chose it in lieu of the Emperor. No
doubt you'll find others that disagree...

I find the Emperor brighter than the Old Lady. Best thing for you to
do though is to check out the demos that are at the PMI website. They
have the same compositions played by both pianos so that you can
compare. That should give you a pretty good idea as to how they
compare. FWIW, I ordered both. :)

I have both and would use them for different funcions.

Actually the names are quite good descriptors, the Emperor is more
aggressive, better for rock and has a bottom end growlly "rumble". The
Old lady is gentler, I would prefer it for solo lyrical stuff and
jazz. I would also use it in mixes to where the piano needs warmth to
distance it from rhythm guitar or organ, some bright pianos can be
murder to get sitting nicely.

BTW I have posted an environment for download for using the sustain
pedal to trigger the sampled pedal noise that comes with the old lady,
but can be adapted for any EXS piano:

Does anyone know the difference(s) between the Emperor and the
B\ufffdsendorfer 290? They're both B\ufffdsendorfers and both by Michiel Post, so
how different can they be?

Great - thanks Pete! :-)

They're reallllllly different! The Emperor is really in-your-face; sort of
a zingy and bright sound with a bass that's got a nice thickness & edge to it.
The PMI 290 is still my most-used piano sound tho -- it's a little more
tame and has different variations on the tone & different presets you can use -
dark piano, bright piano, etc. Emperor would be great for straight
classical recordings in a hall setting, and while the PMI 290 would be equally as
good, it's a little more versatile if you wanted to use it for film-ish sounds,
pop, or if you wanted a nice solo piano in that George Winston sort of way. If
you're doing a big orchestral mix, the Emperor would be the one to use - it
definitely sticks out more.

Thanks Kerry. :-)

Already got the PMI290, so I didn't want to get the Emperor if it was
virtually the same. $80 is a fantasic price, but it's still $80, ya know?

I've now got them both, side to side.

The 290 has a more brittle top with less undamped sustain ringing. The
middle is warmer but less focussed.

The low end of the 290 is also warmer, not that the Emperor low end is
brighter overall, the Emperor has more low and more high. It still has
a lovely bass sound but seems to have more brightness in with it at
the same time if I'm making myself clear.

Thanks Pete. No, it's not *that* clear, but if I imagine two different
piano sounds I really don't know how I'd describe the differences. So I
reckon you've made a terrific attempt! :-)

I spose the real point is: are they different enough to warrant having
both? Sounds like "yep"...(?)
