proper folder location

proper folder location

2005-03-07 by Bob Boilen

I just reinstalled Logic Pro on my Quicksilver Mac.
I run 10.3.8
It put my EXS files in the system library in application support for
Logic.

This folder is owned by the system and doesn't allow me write access.
Now I can change the access to the folder (in fact I did )
but this doesn't seem right.

Where do your EXS Samples and Sampler Instruments belong?
Each time I want a new sample, it takes a while for it to load.
I thought i set up the project manager to scan all of this so it would
know where to look and cut down on load time..
What am i missing?

Bob,

I'm assuming you are running LP 7, right?

A better place is the same folder in your user directory.
( yourname/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments)
You may have to create the a folder called "Sampler Instruments".

See above. Your samples can be anywhere though. I keep all my samples
on a separate drive. Easier for me to stay organized, easy backup etc.
If you only have one drive, you may want to just create a folder for
your samples,
but it's just a matter of preference.

Open project manager, navigate to your "sample instruments" folder.
Functions > "Find unresolved file references for selected items".

This is in the manual, by the way. :)

You don't need to change permissions. The (factory) files go here, the
ones you create should go into the equivalent folders on the user
library. (That's where user instruments, presets etc default to saving
to) See:

for more info.

Other folks have answered the folder location question.
I though I'd just add that if you have LOTS of sample files and
instruments, it's definitely worth getting EXSManager. It's a 3rd
party app which resolves and manages all your EXS24 stuff, but about
100 times faster than Project Manager (no kidding).

Check it out:

This app has saved me DAYS of wasted time....

Having had the questionable pleasure of working with Logic 7 for the first time a few days ago, I must say that this new folder
location thing along with the inability to use aliases for certain things has got to be the the worst improvement in quite a while.
It defenitely doesn't help to keep your system clean and tidy (which allways was very well possible with previous Logic versions).

FWIW, I didn't like the other changes (especially cosmetical ones) they did to Logic either. What once was a brilliantly and stylish
looking GUI is now coming in some colors making you feel grumpy allready the first time you start it (I haven't tried modifying
anything as it wasn't my machine).
Apart from the great new plugins (and perhaps some other changes that I haven't had the time to look into as we were recording),
Logic 7 felt pretty much like a rather big step backwards.

I still want to buy a G5 2x2.x one day (right now I actually have access to them more than often enough, so there's no immediate
need), but seriously, Logic 7 made me think whether I really love the program as much anymore as I once did - and it'd be the only
reason to buy a Mac.

Sorry for the rant,
Sascha

In L7 you can find all the default file paths in the L7 HELP menu under 'last minute
additions' (or somethin like that).
It is a very important doc to read - besides the reference manual under L7s help menu
too... Some changes are due to the fact that in OSX there is general system AND User
folders of the same type... makes sense after some thought. :)

BTW, some folders STILL can be alias's but others only work if you use a 'Symbolic Link'
(unix alias type with absolute paths, can't move em around)... there's a Finder contextual
menu plugin that helps making Symbolic Links very easy.. (Search VersionTracker for it)..
blablabla.. not soo terribly bad...
