a spanner in the chicken system

a spanner in the chicken system

2002-08-06 by gristikballistic

Has anybody else out there purchased Translator Mac on the
understanding that it translates Kurzweil to EXS? Their website claims
it does and for the last two months I been receiving email replys from
them assuring me that the new version would be posted "this week" every
couple of days. Now they dont even bother to respond to my emails (just
to add insult to injury). How can these guys get away with this - the
product simply doesnt do what they state it does and theres no
refund.Ever get the feeling youve been ripped off?

It's been delayed, we know. The new version will be posted tomorrow. Our
apologies to all you who have patiently waited, thanks.

In this case, the person had been e-mailing somewhat frequently, and we
wanted to finish the project instead of immediately responding; that would
be in his ultimate best interests. Ordinarily, we respond within 24 hours.

My feeling is, that they do good work and follow through on their
commitments. But it always takes a lot longer for them to reach the finish
line than they often idealize. I'm currently waiting, anxiously I might add,
for Kurzweil, SoundFont and ASR-10 translations to the EXS24. It'll
happen... one day. Sorry, Garth, but it's the truth. "Next week" was months
ago. But as always, keep on pushing and doing good work you guys. I am
looking forward to these capabilities, even if I have to wait a while. I
don't know which is better: never having hope that a product you need will
ever exist or being told that such a product is eminent and waiting an
agonizingly long time for it. This was the case with the EXS24. I heard of
its coming a year before it shipped, and did no music for an entire year
because I didn't want to invest any more effort in building up my ASR-10
library. I waited and it was worth it. The EXS24 was one of the first of
it's kind out of the gate and I got weeks worth of kits built in a matter of
a couple of days, and started making new music like crazy. I guess that's
how I feel about rubber chicken. Better late than never. -Jer

I'd like to add that I certainly don't have the patience or knowledge to do
what they do. And I can say with confidence that I'm very glad that
businesses like Rubber Chicken exist. They are not swimming in startup cash,
and it's hard when you wear as many hats as those guys do. But their work is
of great benefit. -Jer

Well of course Ive been 'emailing frequently' Garth. Dont misunderstand
me, any unrealistic expectations placed upon your product were caused
by you constantly informing me of its imminent arrival...and then,
nothing. If it had been made clear to me two months ago that the
features I require were two months away - no problem.I dont mind
waiting - as long as Im informed. I too run a business and to be frank,
if I made promises like this and failed to deliver I wouldnt have a
business. Its not personel Sonny, its business...yours.

Sidechains in Logic

2002-08-06 by HELP@MusicBootCamp.com

I'm very aggravated with the fact that side-chaining plugins in Logic can
only route to Audio tracks, but not other Instrument tracks. This is a MAJOR
turnoff for me. Are there any workarounds for this problem? Have you
beta-testers or insider tipsters out there know if this is addressed in
Logic 5.2? Thanks. -Jer

Its all very well to be polite and understanding Jer, I appreciate
keeping the peace as much as anyone. But the truth is that CS is a
commercial enterprise like any other business and when you buy
something over the counter that claims to do something and you find
that it doesnt you dont send them a dozen roses and wish them well for
the future. (I dont anyway). I really quite angry about this whole
thing but... I also see that CS have promised the new working version
tomorrow (see previous posts) and that will surely be a wonderful
thing.
Peace, love, and gooey things to all

I hope it materializes. And... I hear you. An over-optimistic timeline can
be aggrivating.

No excuses here. If we'd known there would be a delay then, we would have
told you as well. Delays are a bad deal for everyone - we are sorry they
happened. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

[exs] experienced logic tutor required...

2002-08-06 by Nick Loe

Does anybody know of, or claim to be a Logic (mac) expert?
I've been using logic for 4 years and would like to employ an expert for an
intense 2hrs of imparting your knowledge in a small seminar with me and my
mate Andy (who is also a logic user) so we can have all our niggling
questions answered and perhaps you could show us some amazing tricks too!?

You would preferably be based in London and it can be your choice of venue -
my house (near Brick Lane, London - Logic 4.7, G3 266 - just round the
corner from the famous bodyworlds exhibition - dead people turned into
plastic) or your house (somewhere in London).

I would reccommend submitting your 'niggling questions' to the collective
on the Logic users mailing list as its a lot cheaper and has a _very_ wide
range of genuine experts (& developers!) on it.

Browsing through the LUG archives can often produce a lot of useful stuff.
I'm *slowly* collating it into a FAQ on my web pages although theres a
fair way to go yet.

For general environment goodness, many people reccommend Len Sasso's
book which is v.cheap and online purchasable via www.swiftkick.com
He also has the #1 collection of interesting environment objects on
the same site. Dig around and see what you find that's cool. When you
find something good, poke it and see how it works! There's literally
an amazing collection of environments. Also for a fun read, check out
the recent thread on the LUG about squarepusher type drum programming
with some interesting posts from Sam Watson & Sam Greene about how
to achieve this in the environment, and IIRC a sample environment.

HTH,

~Pev

thanks for the advice - but what about special techniques for areas like
setting up the environment and doing all sorts of clever midi module control
stuff? - I'd quite like someone to show me stuff which they find really
useful. I have my method of doing things but I'm sure there's loads of more
effective ways of doing things.
