Mac EXS sample find slowdown

Mac EXS sample find slowdown

2002-08-21 by no_such_user

Hiya,

I imagine this may have been discussed before but I cant find it
searching on Yahoo. My EXS sample patches have always taken 4-5 secs
to load up on selection and I'd always put it down to the fact that
my old B&W G3 wasnt that quick. Ive just moved tto a new Dual 867
now however and the speeds the same!?!? After a lot of swearing and
experimentation, I've found that its because I move the aiff files
for the CD's I've converted to a different location to where they
were put during the conversion. (I always put the samples with the
instrument files so I can archive each *converted* CD to CDR so I
dont have to go through the conversion again on reinstall)

Does anyone know if I can force EXS to 'learn' all the new
locations to get back the faster loading times? It seems a very high
price to pay for not leaving samples in the default location... :-(
Having all the samples all in a mess in one folder is not very
appealing to me...

Ta,

A tip I got from Sascha some time back: set up a midi command for
"next instrument", in the EXS preferences. In the EXS load the 1st
instrument in your instrument list. In Logic create a short sequence
that contains the 'next instr' command just once and assign the track
to an EXS instance. Set the sequence to loop (or enable cycle), and
press play -- and go and have a long, long coffee break.
The EXS will load all instruments in turn, updating the .exs files
(re: location of the samples) in the process. Can take a few hours
though, if you have many instrument, so you might wwant to do this
overnight, or while watching a movie or so.

Hey, thanks thats a good tip - I didnt realise it updated after
loading the instrument. However I sometimes get converted samples
with multiple AIFF files (argh!) of the same name where it requests
a manual selection prior to loading up. I assume this will shaft
the whole procedure?

Oh well, another one for the FAQ....

Yeah, that's a problem indeed. While watching the movie and having
your coffee, you have to cast a glance at your monitor from time to
time to see if there's a dialog up, asking for input...

If you know which folder of instruments will run into this problem,
you could start out by removing that folder from the exs-instr
folder, do the suggested trick, and then re-add the folder. Then
pick the 1st instr from this folder, do the suggested trick once
more, but this time stay at the computer to catch any dialogs that
will pop up. Stop Logic's cycling-command as soon as the newly added
folder has been processed.

Yes and no.
Get yourself some tool to find duplicate files. On Windows there's Clonespy,
it's free, I bet there must be something similar for Macs as well. The good
(no, even required) thing is that it doesn't only look for names but for
filesizes too (exactly what the EXS does). Clonespy offers an option to move
all doubled files to a folder of your choice - so in the end you don't risk
loosing anything. On Windows you can also move them to your recycle bin, do
the EXS job and after that say "restore" to the samples in your trash.

Apart from that, it's allways a good idea to find doubled samples - very
often you may not need them.

Sascha

Strings and Orchestral collections for EXS24?

2002-08-21 by Markus H. McDowell

I have been using a Proteus/2 for orchestral sounds for years, mainly
strings. But I am thinking I could probably do better with some ESX24
collections (and the benefit of staying in Logic to work!)

I would like to hear the listers opinions on the best orchestral
collections: mainly strings, but woodwinds as well. Expense is a
concern...ideally I could buy what I need by selling the Proteus/2.
Thanks!
