Yes EXS24 can stream samples.

Download and install Virtual Sample Memory Manager for EXS24 from

http://www.emagic.de/english/support/download/toolsmac.html

When installed set it up by clicking the option button in EXS and choosing
Virtual memory.

Can EXS stream from hardrive?

2002-10-10 by Jason Greenberg

I am wondering if the EXS24 is capable of streaming samples from a hardrive
rather than from internal ram. I currently have 1.4 gigs of ram and am
still unable to use the Malmsjo piano set that I recently bought.
Unfortunately my G4 400mhz has a maximum ram limit of 1.5 gigs so I can't
really upgrade to make much difference.

Streaming would solve my problems.
Thanks,
Jason

I thought the Virtual Sampler Memory Manager was only necessary for pre V5
logic users. Did I dream that, or am I going mad ?

That's not the case. Personally, I'm glad I have a choice, that is until I
move all my samples to a different drive. It chokes my system (disk speed)
otherwise. Flexibility is good. -Jer

...so are there any downsides to installing this ?
Is it totally unnecessary if I were to put all my audio on a dedicated hard
drive ?

Actually, no, you stated the point in your question. If you have a dedicated
drive, then let it do the work of streaming. That's the ideal situation. I
switched it off because it affected my boot drive (samples are stored on the
same drive currently). So if you have a dedicated drive, by all means
install/activate the feature. -Jer

RE: [exs] Can EXS stream from hardrive?

2002-10-10 by Murray McDowall

Switching on sample streaming involves a noticeable increase in CPU load --
especially if you normally use 32 bit mode for storing the samples in RAM.
There is a CPU load in converting files to 32 bit float and that conversion
is happening on every voice scrolling from the hard-drive. Of course it is
also a significant load on the the hard-drive and if the drive is the same
one you have your audio tracks on then you will be able to manage a lot
fewer tracks.

Separate drives and a fast CPU/memory system are what is needed to really
exploit this feature. It is great to have it as an option though especially
if you want to work with the big GigaSampler sets. It would be nice if you
could set the option for each tune.

Murray

Thanks a million for the info, Murray. I was wondering why I wasn't getting
the same performance as some other users. Now I know! Still wish there was
more info of this type in the EXS section of Emagic's web site...

Thanks for the info.

Is it a feature that's easy to deactivate if desired ?

Yes -- just open the little menu and uncheck the box. It is also tunable --
different drive speed settings let you vary how much of the samples are stored
in RAM (all these streaming programs store the front end of the sample in RAM
as a buffer and then spool in the rest) / how much of a load is put on your
drives.

If you leave it switched off and then try to open a tune with a couple of gigs
of instruments in it you machine will have fun trying to load them into RAM.
You can't intervene in a songs load cycle AFAIK to cancel out of this futile
process - that's with LAW anyway. That's why setting this preference on a
per-song basis would be good.

Murray

Your could check out www.soundengine.com they have a prepared piano AKAI
sample CD that could be worth a try. I know they also sell their products
on eBay at a reduced price so try their to.

Luke.

It's not EXS but the best beaten up piano sound I heard lately is in the GEM
Promega 3 (honky Tonk). That's a real junk one they sampled from. Not just a
detuned sample with extra highs, like in workstations.

Try to borrow one for a weekend... :-).

Yeah, that sounds great. Did you see the price though? I'd settle for
a sample that I could load into the EXS that sounds half as good.

Roland Super Sound Set board for the JV series has a couple very good patches-
honky tonk, and one called something like "Dusty Upright"- it has that dull,
out of tune, church fellowship hall sound to it, I've used it on some stuff
with good success. Two other ideas that also work- take a patch like this, and
double it with a good piano patch and adjust the volumes between the two to get
the desired "age". I've also taken a good piano sample in an Akai sampler,
used the scale tuning page to detune some of the notes, dulled the eq at the
mixer, and blended this with an in-tune piano. Each of these does a good job
of getting away from that bright, fake honky-tonk sound.
