expression pedal for Matrix 6

expression pedal for Matrix 6

2010-11-01 by steinbergerstyler

Can anyone recommend an expression (CC) pedal to use with the Matrix 6? Will a standard expression pedal like the Yamaha FC7 of M-Audio EX-P work or does it require something more specialized?

Thanks!

I have the same problem...I have never been able to get an expression or volume pedal to work on the matrix 6R.....I don't know how to patch it and control It via midi....any suggestions?

The M6R does not respond to CC 7 or midi volume like the Matrix 1000 does.
This is the chief reason I could not get rid of my M6R fast enough. Great
machine. Nice sound. Liked the Opcode Galaxy editing software. HATED the
fact it had no overall volume.

The only way to make it work is to use your matrix mod and patch a CC to
VCA2, thus using up your VCA2 strictly for controllable volume.

It's way better to just get an analog guitar volume pot pedal (like the
Ernie Ball) if you want vol control.

I actually want to use the built-in CV pedal input to control CC #2--according to the manual this can be done...anyone?

I'm still confused about this process.....you are proposing giving up VCA number two, which would be routed to be controlled by CC#7..is there a block diagram that shows this patch?

RE: [oberheim] Re: expression pedal for Matrix 6

2010-11-02 by LarryS

I"m not "proposing" this, I'm saying it's the only way to do it that I've
ever heard of.

If you want midi input of volume, whether it by pedal, sequencer, or master
contoller, the midi data has to modulate something because NOTHING is
built-in, like you've seen on other synths. In this case, to control
volume, your choices are either VCA1 or VCA2. As VCA1 is best used for
envelope work, the logical choice is VCA2.

Route midi CC7 (or whatever you're using) to VCA2 modulation in the
modulation matrix section of your programming. Easy-peasy. I don't have
one in front of me, but you can surely figure this out.

IIRC, and it's been over 20 years, guys, the CV input is NOT for a "cv
pedal" as such. It's for a control voltage, not a regular pot pedal as
there is no voltage biasing on the jack. You have to squirt some voltage
INTO it, like if it were connected to a modular system. So it's never gonna
work with a volume pedal.

Well, there is a way to work around that.

Take a quarter phone jack and solder to it a standard 9 volt power
connector. Attach a 9 volt battery to it and plug it into one side of a mono
volume pedal. Plug the other side to the CV input jack, and you've just
converted a volume pedal to a CV pedal.

Re: expression pedal for Matrix 6

Is anyone able to answer my original question? I have a Matrix 6 KEYBOARD-not rack. It has a pedal input. What type of pedal is required for this? Will a standard expression pedal work or is there a special kind of pedal that is required?

Thanks.

RE: [oberheim] Re: expression pedal for Matrix 6

2010-11-02 by LarryS

Sorry, I can't.
I had always thought that the keyboard was exactly the same as the rack.
EXACTLY. Same elex.. just had a keyboard strapped on. As was the case with
many synths of the day.

In which case, we've answered this question. Twice.

I guess we could answer it two more times if it'd make you feel better.

The keyboard was available as the Xk-1, btw.

In any case, as I said before, nothing is "built in" to the Matrix 6. Not
volume, not expression, nothing. If you want an input to do something,
expression or anything else, you gotta program it to do so through the
matrix modulation portion of each patch. You have to assign it a paramter
to modulate otherwise it won't, no matter what you plug in.

No, the keyboard has two pedal inputs, unlike the rack. Third try.

You might try a pedal with a 50K pot. I seem to remember this was the standard Oberheim pedal.

According to the manual, page 10: Pedal #1 is the continuous / volume ("rocker-style") pedal input.

Someone on the list was correct: in order for the pedal to have any effect, you must route it to a parameter using the modulation matrix.

According to the manual, page 34: to route the pedal (as MOD SRC) to the destination (MOD DEST), use modulation source #16 (PED1).

Maybe not all your patches have the pedal routed to anything in the mod matrix, hence why you are not hearing anything, if you have even tried it (sounds like you don't have a pedal yet, and are looking to make sure you buy the right kind). I have a Roland EV-5 expression pedal and intend to try it out on my M6 in the next 10-14 hours. Stay tuned.

if it doesnt take a cv pedal
it takes a regular switch like a sustain pedal.

it has to be programmed into the modulation matrix to work. it usually does nothing or unexpected things to the factory patches. -pc

Yeah, the Matrix 6 keyboard has both.

According to the manual, pedal input #2 is a momentary pedal / switch pedal. It also functions as a trigger input. Pedal #1 is the rocker-style or volume pedal. (The manual does actually seem to mix up the pedal inputs in some sections, which is confusing.)

I tried my Roland EV-5 rocker pedal in pedal input #1 but could not get it to do much of anything, no matter what I programmed.

I used a Boss momentary pedal (with switchable polarity) in input #2 and was able to get it to affect the sound as expected based on the settings in the modulation matrix of various patches.

The fact that my EV-5 pedal doesn't work in my keyboard isn't conclusive... maybe my pedal #1 jack is broken, or maybe the EV-5 hasn't got the right capacitance or polarity for what the Oberheim Matrix 6 is expecting -- though if the polarity was wrong, it just would work in the reverse fashion. The EV-5 also has a sensitivity knob on it... adjusting it made no perceptible difference.

Unfortunately I don't have any other rocker-style pedals to try.

I plugged a Yamaha FC7 into the Pedal 1 jack--the Matrix 6 senses it and will transmit the appropriate CC# via midi to my computer but only for value 0-14 (i.e. out of 0-127). The pedal doesn't have any audible effect on the Matrix patches even when programmed appropriately, which leads me to believe it's a problem with the pedal or the Pedal 1 jack.

Is this the wrong kind of pedal? The manual says you should a standard guitar cable for the input (i.e. TS plug?) but as far as I know all expression pedals use TRS plugs.

Any suggestions? Anyone ever get Pedal 1 to work on the Matrix 6 or 6R)?

Okay, if it's a TS plug then we're very probably talking about a CV pedal
instead of an expression pedal. I would suggest the trick I mentioned
earlier to convert a volume pedal to a CV pedal and see if that works --
you're talking a buck or two for the battery connector.

looking for info about OB-1 / FVS cassette interface and OB-1 calibration procedure

2010-11-04 by synthwalker

Dear venerable OB users,

I\u2019m looking for any info / schematics about the OB-1 / FVS memory cassette interface module for a retro engineering project.

I\u2019m also looking for a calibration procedure for the OB-1 / the action of the different trimmers inside.

Cheers,

Eric

yeah, looking on the web a bit you are right, I was under the impression expression pedal=cv pedal, but cv pedals are active.

Are there any manufacturers still making CV pedals?

No !
you are wrong both KBD and rack of the matrix6 have 2 pedals input
both of them, read the manuals carefully

No, the keyboard has two pedal inputs, unlike the rack. Third try.

I can second "steinbergerstyler" from my experience over the weekend.

I noticed my sequencer was receiving Volume Control messages with a value of 0, coming from the Matrix 6 (keyboard) -- with nothing plugged in to pedal input #1. I plugged in my Roland EV-5 and found it could only muster values of 0 through 9.

I like this idea of adding some potency to the pedal output but I'm afraid I haven't got it in me to break out a soldering iron and work some kind of electronics wizardry. Will be looking for recommendations of pedals.

i think there are actually some relatively cheap cv pedals out there, behringer makes one in the $30 range.
