moving modules within 12 or 18 systems - ?

2008-06-04 by cellabbee

I saw a few posts where members referred to moving modules into different places as "pretty
easy" (with a few exceptions).

I would like to re-position several modules so I have unscrewed the faceplate on 291e and I
see there is a series of wires coming out and attaching to the inside of the case. That's as far
as I got.

What next? DIsattach those wires and re-attach to new position? Or does the whole unit
unplug? Anyone know??

thnks... dimitrios

I think you should be able to just unseat wiring connector that extends from your 291e and connects to your cabinet's buss board.

I'm guessing that the module you unscrewed was at the right side of
your case. Am I right?

Those wires are terminated in a plug, which plugs into a "buss board"
on the back of the cabinet. The buss board doesn't quite run the whole
width of the cabinet, so the plug may be plugged in under the module
to the left of the one you removed.

thanks guys -- so the plug is the long green piece the wires attach
too, and can be un-plugged easily/safely? Then plugged back into the
buss at new position (I plan to move module to a different boat,
otherwise the wires might just be long enough to leave plugged in )?

So can the plug be plugged in to any available spot on the buss?

Is this procedure something I can screw up and damage any of the
modules? I don't have much experience with electronics so all tips and
suggestions welcome.

thanks (and ps, to paint the overall picture -- I wanted to move the
281e and 292e up to top row left, then move the 291e down from top row
to middle row left, and, finally, shift the 250 left one space so it
is situated dead center.)

All true. The "long green piece" slides on to fingers on the edge of
the "buss board". Just pull it in the plane of the buss board, and it
should slide off fairly easily. The green edge connector is keyed, so
you can't plug it in backwards.

The only exceptions to this are that some modules have other
connections to to connectors on the back of a boat. Modules that have
this sort of extra connection include the 227e, the 225e, and the 222e.

I dont think anyone has said it yet cause its kinda
obvious.. however.. its a good plan to turn off the
system before you attempt swapping modules around..

also. take measures to make sure to reduce static
while handling the boards... not dragging your socked
feet along the carpet while holding the module would
be one thing you can do for instance... anti static
wrist strap is another..might seem a little over the
top but certainly can't hurt unless you get tangled in
it..

Probably best to unplug the system. Even when the power is off, there is still juice flowing.. I
forget which rails are hot, but this is evident with the 222e as the ring charging lights are
active even when the power is off.

its a DC supply (+12volts) unplugging might be good but I seriously doubt the DC is gunan bite you.. figured that ground wire was kinda handy

I have question regarding my own system plans.

If I get a 12 or 18 cabinet intending to fill it over time, are the
mentioned 3 modules user installable?

In other words, say I purchase a partially filled cabinet, would I
need to ship it back to get certain modules installed at a later date ?

I have moved around my 227e and 225e several times, no problems. I
cannot say about the 222e but i assume it wouldn't be a problem.

Each of them has a circuit board that mounts on the back panel. The
cut-outs are already in the panel, so it shouldn't be too hard to
install, just a little harder than a normal module.
