68332-SDRAM interface

68332-SDRAM interface

2003-04-08 by shyam_mali

Hi Charles, Robert

Thanks for the assurance, i am keen on starting this project.
To start with the 332, i feel that it might be very helpful to have
an off-the-shelf 168-pin SDRAM module interface as a building block
for future applications.
I will appreciate suggestions regarding this interface... has anyone
tried it yet? What is the most logical way to go about achieving the
requirement? Are there any latches/buffers that support level
shifing? i will need these anyways to interface with the 64-bit wide
bus from the DIMM modules.

Shyam

Shyam,

Do you mean that you want to put Synchronous DRAM, like the kind used in PC's and stuff?

The MC68332 was not particularly designed to deal with DRAM.

Before we start walking down this road, I wanted to make sure that you are talking about DRAM that plugs into the motherboards of PC's.

Regards,

Charlie

Shyam,

I don't think you'll get many responses on using SDRAM with a 68xxx. These
processors have asynchronous external buses. The conversion hardware and
logic would be complex.

[68300] Re: 68332-SDRAM interface

2003-04-08 by Steve Russell

Shyam,

The 68360 is listed as a production part and has a DRAM interface. It also
has a full 32-bit address, if you find that a mere 24 bits cramps your style.

Several years ago, I brought up an Atlas eval board. It only took me a few
days to get the software setup right.

Outside of the embedded systems world, I don't think that people would
consider the 332 able to address "large chunks of memory". By using SRAM
and the built in chip select system, the 332 can get at 11 whole megabytes
of memory, one megabyte being the boot ROM. On the bus with a bunch of
glue...16 megabytes minus the stuff up at the top and minus the boot ROM.

I don't think that you could find a 16MB SDRAM stick if you tried.

If you need large Flash, try a Disk-On-Chip.

If you need large memory plus the TPU, an MPC565 would probably be better.

Shyam,

Yes, it looks pretty complex. The solution appears to include a big CPLD,
the level conversion buffers, and the SDRAM clock. Apparently the CPLD
does the sync-async interface as well as the refresh logic.

You might have picked the wrong microcontroller series. Can you give us
more information on what you want? TPU? More than 16 MB? Only SDRAM?

Jeff

Re: [68300] Re: 68332-SDRAM interface

Jeff,
I got the message, synchronus ram is not the solution
for the 332, i will try some other data storage flash
disk etc. In my case the power is not of much concern
as compared to the cost.
I appreciate the prompt response/criticism i received
from you all.
Thanks
Shyam

Shyam,

Yes, it looks pretty complex. The solution appears to
include a big CPLD,
the level conversion buffers, and the SDRAM clock.
Apparently the CPLD
does the sync-async interface as well as the refresh
logic.

You might have picked the wrong microcontroller
series. Can you give us
more information on what you want? TPU? More than 16
MB? Only SDRAM?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Can you comment on this design, I happened to see this
site after i
read your message.
http://www.users.qwest.net/~kmaxon/page/cont/cont47.htm
. The need for
interfacing large chunks of memory to use the full
features of
microcontrollers like the 332 is apparent and
universal.

Shyam

...if you are not in absolute need of the TPU (assuming this is what
brought you to the '332 in the first place), you should have a look
at a different family of Motorola processors/controllers: the
ColdFire. There are devices with DRAM (MCF5206e) and SDRAM interface
(MCF5307,5407,5272,5282,...). And if you are familiar with 68K you'll
find the ColdFire very easy.
