Costco paper... be careful!

Costco paper... be careful!

2004-11-22 by John Broski

Hello All,

I just bought a box of the Costco paper (from the San Ramon, California store... SF Bay Area). I was careful to get the "Made in Switzerland" version, with no "Made in Japan" sticker. But the paper inside is clearly the premium glossy lookalike... very plasticky RC surface, no Epson imprint on back. Disappointing! I really like the "fiber-base look" of the plain old Epson Photo Paper. I guess I'll use the new one for color work.

So maybe, before stocking up, you should slit the tape on the boxes and take a peek inside. Costco may be inconsistent in their labeling.

John,

I just spoke with the Costco inkjet paper buyer. Unfortunately, he would
not be very forthcoming. Here is what I was able to get: The old "Made in
Switzerland" paper ran out before the new supplies were available. (He
could not explain the "Epson" logo on the back of the Swiss paper at all.
That should not have happened.) At any rate, they turned to another
manufacturer on a temporary basis. This is what is in the "Made in Japan"
boxes. (He could also not understand how I got one of these on line, since
that department was not supposed to have any of the Japanese paper.) The
new "Made is Switzerland" box has a paper that does have different
specifications than the old Swiss paper. A Costco store might well have
the old and new papers on the floor at the same time.

In general, the conversation with the Costco buyer was not very re-assuring.
The new Swiss paper may be a stable, consistent product for a while, but
given their way of doing business, the product in the box might change at
any time without notice.

I guess we're getting what we pay for.

I think there must be a way to find out what the swiss paper actually
is. Isnt there only one photo paper company in switzerland? It probaly
is also sold under several names. It looks like regular glossy paper on
the front, not too glossy, but more glossy that cheap epson glossy.
When you spray the costco with print sheild, it is a bit less glossy,
which is almost a good thing, although a lot of images prob dont need
to be sprayed......but either way, the paper is nice to feel, and
mainly, the best thing is that the image looks real good. As good as
photo rag let's say. Of course they wont last forever, but probably for
headshots and such, plenty long enough! Right now i cant remember if
the box i got says anything on the back, but think it was blank. That
seems weird if i am following paul right when he says that his said
epson on the back......hmmmm....if it said epson, wouldnt that mean
that is an epson paper? that we can get somewhere else?.....but at five
times the price?......keep you posted DM

Ilford is the major Swiss paper source, but there is at least one other --
Folex.

I've requested some samples of Ilford papers that appear to be different
from the Galerie series. So, we'll see what I can get.

Ilford could well be the source of some Epson paper.

Not too much Epson paper I hope. I have become a little disillusioned
with Ilford.

I have been printing on Ilford Smooth Heavyweight Matte paper, and
have come to realise just how poor quality it is compared to EEM
(Still called archival matte over here). Ilford SHM is cheaper,
brighter, and double sided if you want that sort or thing, but the
surface seems too smooth, and areas of dark tonality get blotchy. It
doesn't give good tonal transitions.

The Ilford Smooth Pearl needs a better colour profile that the one
that Ilford supplies, which results in a green tinge. (Yes, I know
that this is a B&W group.)

So at this stage I wouldn't like to see Ilford supplying too much
paper to Epson.

I have no idea, Paul, I was obviously thinking of the Japanese
Epson papers in general. Mitsubishi makes a wide range of papers for
a lot of outlets, and many of them are first rate. I wouldn't mind
testing a few, I'm not entirely happy with EEM for one. It does
print well, but why waste ink and effort on a paper that can yellow
in as little as a few months under the right (wrong?) conditions? I
guess the great paper chase goes on....

Epson Semimatte paper [was Costco paper... be careful!]

2004-11-23 by Paul Roark

Steve,

>...
> I guess the great paper chase goes on....

And it probably will continue for a long time.

Speaking of which, I've been printing different papers with the little C86,
and one thing that struck me was that it was actually up to printing an
essentially perfect "glossy" print -- something I've really not felt the
other printers I have are up to. The 2200 at 2880, with HS un-checked is
close. The 4000 samples I've seen are also very good, although, oddly, do
not have a great dmax.

With the C86, the weakness is that the pizza wheel marks show in solid black
areas with Premium Glossy paper. But, they don't show with the Premium
Semimatte.

With all Epson Premium papers the Epson UltraChrome Photo K gives a much
better dmax than MIS's PK, at least with the C86.

So, the combination that looks the best to me with the C86 is UC PK with MIS
EZ-N on Premium Semimatte. Under glass, as it would be as a display print,
I think it looks so much better than the matte papers that I suspect it will
be a top paper for this use. And it has a Wilhelm ">200 year" paper life
rating, which is the same rating Wilhelm gives cotton papers. In fade tests
the Semigloss was about as good as the UltraSmooth. Neither have OBAs.

In short, the combination of Premium Semimatte, UC PK, MIS EZ-N, & C86 makes
arguably the best looking prints I've seen.

Re: Epson Semimatte paper [was Costco paper... be careful!]

Yep, I noticed the difference immediately when I ran out of the
original UC inks for the 7600 and switched to MIS. I haven't needed
to do RC papers with it for a while, though, so I switched the K to
Eboni. But I'm still getting much more use out of the 7500 with UT-
1, so I'm considering selling the 7600 and getting the new 24" HP
with the 70+ yr dye inks for the color display prints my commercial
clients like. Perhaps when MIS finds a source for an equivalent dye
ink?

Is the UC PK the same ink as the Durabright K, or are you refilling?
Also, is the C-86 doing a better job than the C-82 you started the
EZ-BW set with?

HP dye & UC PK {was Epson Semimatte paper}

My impression is that the relatively long fade resistance dyes can now get
is due largely to the swellable papers. I tested the HP grayscale inks on
several versions of the swellable papers, and they were about the same and
not bad, but not close to UT pigments.

>Is the UC PK the same ink as the Durabright K, or are you refilling?

PK is not the same as the DuraBrite black. That one is a hybrid pigment-dye
"universal" ink. I'm filling the new C86 empty carts with UC PK from a 7600
PK cart.

Yes, I think they are improving the breed. The resolution keeps going up
and the dmax is better.
