MIS Clear Carts....

MIS Clear Carts....

2005-04-25 by jeffleeg8

Hi:

Are they self-sealing or do they need the little gromets (in the
bottom) when not in the printer?

Thanks!

They have poppet valves like the Epson carts. As such they are
self-sealing. I, however, rinse the outlets and put tape over them to avoid
the possibility of residual ink drying and getting into the printer inlet.

Epson Pr.Semi matte....Roark workflow

2005-05-01 by Douglas meeuwsen

I was at a gallerie yesterday, and the BW darkroom prints looked pretty
good with a very nice surface, and no glass in front. I asked the guy
what kind of paper it was, thinking they may have been ink prints, and
he said "semi-matte, darkroom".....Anyways, I still have not been able
to get the kind of quality that I get from kirkland from my semi-matte
using the curves for ebony and glop. I suspect that it is The media
setting, which I am not sure of. When I use the glossy film setting,
the shadows are kind of posterized, and when I use the premium glossy
setting the ink is way too heavy. I just did a print with premium
semigloss, and it did turn out quite nice. The glop is less effective
with semigloss that it is with kirkland and semi-matte. I do like the
surface of semi the best, and the glop works great on it.

So I am wondering if I should experiment more with media settings, or
adjust the curves. I almost think that the ilford curves may work
better than the semimatte curve. (accidentally chose the wrong one one
time. It was the ilford carbon curve, looked pretty good, but it was a
diferent image)

So, Paul, or anyone that may be trying this combo, what do you guys
suggest? I have been doing some experiments jsut trying to drain my
last prefilled glop cart. It is finally empty, so tomorrow I will
attemp switching over to the clear carts. Crossing my fingers!

as Usual, all info is much appreciated,

Doug M

Doug,

I use Epson Premium Semimatte (PSM) with the newer UT inksets (not UT1) and
no Glop. I spray it after I print. My workflow is just the normal
Photoshop RGB curves, Epson driver, with Eboni installed but not used. The
black is generated by the 2 dark gray inks.

Because PSM was not available in smaller sizes, I have not made many curves
for it. I suppose I should do that now that more people will be cutting it
down from 17 x 22.

What printer and inkset are you using?

hmmmmm....I have a curve from you (i think) for premium semi and glop
and eboni.....it is only one curve, neutral. I use the 1280, with
UT2/glop. Tomorrow, after I get the clear carts installed I will mess
around with some diferent things, like trying the diferent media
settings on a step wedge etc.......now I wonder where that curve came
from!

RE: [Digital BW] Epson Pr.Semi matte....Roark workflow

2005-05-01 by Paul Roark

Doug,

You're right, I do have a neutral PSM curve for the 1280 and UT2. I also
made a version of that for Glop.

I don't see any notes on media type, so I assume the usual UT2 Curves
settings are used.

I did notice the Green & Red black points on the curves were the opposite of
what usually gives the best dmax, so I made a version 2 with the points
reversed. I'll see how they work today.

Re: [Digital BW] Epson Pr.Semi matte....Roark workflow

2005-05-01 by Douglas meeuwsen

super dumb question:
What are the "usual settings for ut2 curves"?.....for ilford and
kirkland, it is "glossy film", for matte prints it is "matte paper",
and for pr. glossy, semi gloss and luster it is "preimium photo
paper".....so is there "usual setting? I am thinking possibly "glossy
photo paper" or "photo paper"......I'll give those a try when I
getting my new clear carts going today......thanks in advance! DM

Clear carts ....what a mess

2005-05-02 by Douglas meeuwsen

Wow....just filled my clear carts. One of the valves on the bottom must
have been pushed out of whack when we sucked the ink out the bottom,
cuz it just leaked like crazy. I poked the bottom fill snout back in,
Moved it around a little, and it slowed it down a lot....We got it into
the printer ok, and the nozzle checks were good after one cleaning.
Right now it seems to be making a real nice print using glop and Pauls
carbon curve on kirkland paper.......Looks like the system is working
ok. I am assuming that the cart will not leak while in the
printer.....Correct? Man, I HOPE so.....Doug m

Doug,

> What are the "usual settings for ut2 curves"? ...

Under the subtitle #2, "Image Editor Adjustment Curves" the general settings
are set out. The media type, unless otherwise specified, is "Photo Paper."
Note that when Glop is used, the resolution should be 2880. See
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT2-Readme.htm.

Prem Semi-matte experiments.....

2005-05-03 by Douglas meeuwsen

After messing around with UT2/glop and the roark Workflow on the 1280,
my impressions are:

Glop works best on Kirkland paper. About perfectly, and no need for
2880. No need for spray (except protection) Good from any angle, very
slight glossy surface. Real nice feel when handling. Professional, not
"computery"

Glop is pretty good on Epson Prem Semi matte, and the surface has
almost no gloss reflection. There is a slight need for spray to Iron
out some gloss diferential issues. No actual Bronzing with Glop
However. Absolutely needs to be 2880, or the shadows block up, and you
can see Black-only- like dots in the mids. Looks just the semi-matte
darkroom prints I saw and touched last week at a gallerie.

Glop on preium semi gloss definitely has to be sprayed, and then the
reflections are distracting. Good heft, good image, but you can tell
it's been sprayed. The surface feels funny to me.

Looks like premium semi-matte is almost as good as kirkland, but a
little more trouble. Niether of these feels or looks like plastic. (the
premium semi-gloss does though)

For people looking for that darkroom Vibe, These two are pretty close.
Thanks to Mr. Roark for putting the system together, and answering all
my silly questions!

I'm set.....now I can relax...aaahhh
