Which B&W printer for my purposes?

Which B&W printer for my purposes?

2005-08-18 by Jason

Howdy all - I just got introduced to this group.

I'm currently studying photography at TAFE (tertiary education), and
at the moment we're concentrating entirely on B&W (so this group
should be quite useful!).

Now, the printer I currently own is a Canon i70 (I use a DSLR), but
I want to upgrade.

I also want the printer to be good at colour, as well as printing
good, neutral B&W. Because of that I'm not willing to go and
dedicate a printer entirely to B&W, so I need something that can do
both (besides, I'd have to import the inks from the US - bit of a
nuisance, and I need a new printer ASAP).

I've been looking around at various Canon, Epson and HP
printers...my budget? Well, to make it easier (due to differing
currencies), the Pixma iP5000 is comfortably within my budget. I
could be convinced to spend the equivalent of the iP8500. I don't
really want to spend the money on the i9950 (I believe it's the
i9900 in the US), but I could manage it if I had to...

Any recommendations?

I've had the HP 8450 recommended to me. The Epson 2100 looked
decent (I've had the 2200 recommended to me, but I don't think that
model is available in Australia), but I have no idea how much that
costs, and it's been discontinued anyway

I think the Epson 2400 is the one, if it's in the price ballpark.

I'd love that printer. Unfortunately it's well out of the ballpark.

I was just looking at a review the Epson R800, but apparently that's
a little disappointing with B&W.

RE: [Digital BW] Which B&W printer for my purposes?

2005-08-18 by Paul Roark

I don't think there is any printer that can do excellent color and B&W aside
from the 2400 (and its larger versions) without switching inks. The 2200
with QTR can do a good job and would be the second best choice if ink
switching is out of the question. The color inksets really have trouble
with B&W if they don't have at least one gray ink in addition to the black
ink. Color tints, cross-overs, metamerism, etc. just can't be avoided
without a gray ink.

Re: [Digital BW] Which B&W printer for my purposes?

2005-08-18 by Jason

What's QTR?

As I mentioned, I was also looking at the epson R800, but I think
the Matte black cartridge is used for text with the photo black
being used for photos, meaning it may as well only have 1 black
cartridge for photos.

I've had the HP 8450 recommended, but is that only 1 black ink as
well?

The Canon Pixma iP5000 seems to be the only other printer with
a 'photo black', though the normal black is used for text according
to a review i've read, with the photo black being for photos - so
again it's only really using 1 black for photos, if my understanding
is correct.

I know that I can't get spot on B&W and colour without spending big -
but I need better prints than what I've got now.

The i9950 does decent B&W from what I've heard....I'll be looking at
profiling my printer once I get it, if that helps.

I'm assuming that getting a set of quadtone inks and simply
switching the ink cartridges over when i need B&W or colour isn't a
good idea, correct?

RE: [Digital BW] Which B&W printer for my purposes?

See http://harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html

It is a way to control the 2200/2100 such that the B&W image is made mostly
with the Light Black ink.

I would stay away from B&W images made with color-only inksets or dyes.

Lots of people do it, including me. The poppet valve carts are easy to pull
in and out. If I were doing both color and B&W all the time, I'd just have
2 printers, but for occasional color printing switching carts is no big
deal. The C86, having only 4 carts, only three of which need to be
switched, is the easiest one to do this with. The modern printers with
light inks can make a slightly smoother print, but the little C86 is
amazingly capable, especially for B&W. I'll be trying to mix an inkset for
the R200 very soon also. It might be even better, since it has the light
inks.

RE: [Digital BW] Which B&W printer for my purposes?

2005-08-18 by Daniel Staver

Hi Jason,

you might want to consider ink costs in addition to the printer costs. The
cost of the printer itself will pale in comparison to what you'll spend on
ink an paper during a year if you print a lot.

I don't know what ink prices are like where you live, but here in Norway a
single cartridge for the 2100 (2200 in the US) costs almost $20 USD. I
easily run through a full set of seven cartridges in a month, so that would
be a cost of $140 per month. By ordering ink in 4oz bottles from MIS and
refilling my own cartridges I reduce the cost to about 1/10 of that. Much
more reasonable.

I would recommend the 2100. It can make excellent color and BW prints up to
13x19 without switching inks. This printer has a very large user base and
you'll easily find help for any issues you might have online. Now that the
2400 is out you might be able to find one used for a very good price. There
are many third-party color and BW inksets available.

A dedicated BW inkset will give you slightly smoother highlights and
slightly more arhcival prints, but I suggest you try the standard inkset
with QuadToneRIP first and see whether that is good enough for you. With a
MIS inkset using Eboni black you can also try Clayton Jones' BO approach:
http://www.cjcom.net/articles/digiprn3.htm

MIS just released information about a new color inkset for the 2100:
http://www.inksupply.com/arcink_mispro.cfm

I don't think anyone has tested it yet, but I plan to order one this week
and will post my results as soon as possible.

Hi Paul,

That's one of my un-asked questions aswered.

> It might be even better, since it has the light inks.

This is a B+W inkset? Will this feed back up to MIS? I ask as here in the
UK, there is about £10 difference between the C86 & the R200. So if there is
a B+W R200 inkset in the (near) future, it may change my purchasing
decisions.

Although I'd welcome any guidance anyone has on this.

Chris

Yes, I'll be starting on making a B&W inkset for the R200, probably today.
I tried UT2 in it, and the technical quality of the image was amazing. With
the printer selling at Office Depot in this area for $69, it may set a new
price-quality standard. I think MIS aggress and will mix the set as soon as
I find a formula that works well. On the other hand, we know the C86 works,
and there is uncertainty with this new printer.

The UT2 inkset was a bit too dark for the r200, especially the shadows of
glossy prints, and the shadows were too warm with sepia loaded. So, I'm not
going to just use the UT2 approach. In fact, I'm inclined to go with a C86
EZ approach -- monotone inks where the tone range is controlled by plugging
in different carts and densities are mostly controlled with driver sliders
and settings. If there are any curves, they'll be simple, supplementary
ones like I've made for the C86. I think simple grayscale curves, which can
usually be applied as Transfer Functions in the "Print with Preview"
approach, are the only ones most people can deal with in terms of
fine-tuning ("linearizing") their own systems. And, frankly, the best
prints are usually those using the Epson driver with close to its default
settings.

Would you recommend hanging on for the R200 version then, or continuing with
my plan for C86 (I'm moving into our first house tomorrow - so the printer
purchase isn't immediate!).

Thanks,

Chris.

I'll know about printing quality of the R200 in a matter or a few days. The
issue of whether the r200 is as reliable as the c86 is probably impossible
to answer in the short run.

r200 with QTR

Paul,
For someone who uses QTR, and actually _enjoys_ making profiles, what inks
would you recommend for the r200?

ones like I've made for the C86. I think simple grayscale curves, which can
usually be applied as Transfer Functions in the "Print with Preview"
approach, are the only ones most people can deal with in terms of
fine-tuning ("linearizing") their own systems. And, frankly, the best
prints are usually those using the Epson driver with close to its default
settings.

You could use UT2 or UT7 inks. If you don't use sepia, put either the light
carbon or UT-FS-Y in the Y spot.

I will probably make a unique inkset for the R200, but it's too soon for me
to know at this point.

John,

MediaStreet now sells a b&w inkset for the R200 family. There is both
a matte black and photo black version, plus it has a gloss optimizer ink
for photo paper. There are several ready-to-go QTR profiles for it. See:

Roy,

This new ink set is very intriguing. I'm using the C86/EZ combo now,
and get good results, but I tire of changing cartridges for
photo/matte and for toning. These sound like they'd eliminate that
annoyance.

If you wouldn't mind, a couple questions. First, the site mentions a
gloss optimizer that can be applied via "software control". Where
does this gloss optimizer reside in a 6-position printer like the
R200?

Also, do you know if profiles will be forthcoming for more non-
mediastreet papers?

Thanks for any input.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: r200 with QTR

2005-08-29 by John Moody

Matt,
Please let us know if you try these inks.
They do sound very interesting. I am going with UT7 with FS-Y,
because
.basically, I found very little information on the MediaStreet
inkset. I’m viewing this trial with the r200 as a way to learn, and believe
I may move in a different direction ultimately. With so many people working
with UT7 and variants of it, I figured they might help me find that
direction along the way. The r200 is certainly an inexpensive way to start
exploring!

2005-08-29 by Roy Harrington

The MediaStreet QuadBlack inkset is similar to UT2 and UT7 except that
rather than the sepia ink in Y they have the gloss optimizer. So there's
K (matte or photo), C, LC are 2 cool grays, M, LM are 2 warm grays,
Y is the gloss opt. "software control" just means that it uses QTR curves.
Of the off-the-shelf inksets I think it's the only one with gloss and produces
quite nice prints on photo lustre paper -- no bronzing at all, pretty much
indistinguishable from a darkroom luster RC paper.

The profiles are mostly Mediastreet papers, but Entrada is also there and
Renaissance is H. Photo Rag. I'm pretty sure the Lustre profile would work
with any of the Epson Premium photo papers.

[Digital BW] Re: r200 with QTR

Ah, there's the thing I missed. I had understood that both blacks
would be in at the same time. This is not the case, then, so some ink
switching would still be necessary for matte/lustre conversion.

Thanks a lot for the information. I may have to try these out.

John,

I'll let you know if I try them. In the meantime, I'm also interested
in your solution. I'm familiar with the UT7 inks, though I've never
used them. What is the advantage of using FS-Y over the standard UT7 Y?

I'm hoping you'll be kind enough to release whatever QTR profiles you

RE: [Digital BW] Re: r200 with QTR

2005-08-30 by John Moody

The FS-Y is lighter, so you should have fewer dots visible in the
highlights. After seeing a Tyler Boley print, I realize there is a _huge_
improvement possible from what I have toyed with using UC inks in the 2200.

Anything I come up with I’ll be looking to discuss. Minimizing dither
patters is my goal. The Epson/Roark approach is hard to beat, and will be
my benchmark.

Best regards,
John Moody

r200 with QTR

2005-09-06 by John Moody

I now have a full set of working chips for the r200 with UT7/FS-Y. Perfect
nozzle check on first try, and head alignment repeated 3 times.
I have only printed the Ink Pattern Page on EVFA at 720, 1440, and 2880 so
far, but I have the following observations while waiting for them to dry
down.

The microweave pattern is not perfect, i.e. you can see that it was
obviously printed by an inket printer. The pattern degrades; more banded,
within ~0.6 inches of the paper edge, making the \ufffdgood\ufffd image area about 1\ufffd
less in height than the paper.

It seems the ink dots are too small to \ufffdfill\ufffd the lines. This is seen at
any dpi resolution, but better at 2880.

I printed a purge pattern using the Epson driver on Kirkland to evaluate the
bronzing; it looks very promising as Paul said. The fine microweave banding
shows there as well.

Are other users seeing the same thing with their r200?

Best regards,
John Moody

John,

I have not had time to get back to the R200. With the cheaper printers the
last 1" is rougher because the heads tend to be "vertical," such that they
are still printing after the paper is outside the main rollers.

How close to neutral and a good ramp is the UT7 + FSY with the Epson driver
and Color Controls checked? I have not loaded that combination to see how
it'll look with a "EZ" approach.

2005-09-07 by John Moody

I expected the last bit to be rougher, but I see it on the first bit as
well. I suppose the curved paper path is not the best thing for heavy
papers. At normal viewing distances, it is hard to see. Move in for a
close inspection and it jumps right out.

John,

I just have not had time to look in detail at your results. The ones below
look good at first glance. Frankly, I still think in RGB and Visual
Density, so I'll have to do more comparisons.

Was this with the Epson driver? What settings?

RE: [Digital BW] r200 with QTR and UT7+FS-Y

2005-09-09 by John Moody

Paul,
This was using QTR. For the cool profile, I significantly limited the FS-Y
ink (40%) to allow the UT7-LM to smooth out the Lab-b axis. These results
are from mixing 60% warm profile and 40% cool profile.
I'm very pleased with the dotless highlights; thanks so much for the
suggestion of FS-Y in place of sepia.

Best regards,
John Moody

John,

I just have not had time to look in detail at your results. The ones below
look good at first glance. Frankly, I still think in RGB and Visual
Density, so I'll have to do more comparisons.

Was this with the Epson driver? What settings?
