1160 clog question

1160 clog question

2006-02-25 by bruce greene

I've just converted my 1160 to FS-UT inks + Eboni black (using No More
Carts CIS).

I'm having a heck of a time keeping the Eboni ink running without clogs.

Previously, I had used Generations black (w/dye ink component).

My question: Is the old dye inks reacting in the parking pad with the
Ebony black and making goo? And if so, how to I remedy this?

Thanks guys!

Probably yes. I found when I rinsed the dyes off the parking pad my old
1280 suddenly stopped having the nuisance clogs of the black jets.

The junk on the pad may have left debris on the head also. So, a bias tape
or folded strip of paper towel, soaked in Windex and wiped across the head
might help.

Thanks Paul,

2 questions:

Where does one get "bias tape" (and what's it used for normally?)?

Do I need to change the parking pad, or is there a way to clean it?

Any sewing shop will have it. Wal-Mart has it. The package I have is
Wrights Single Fold Bias Tape. It's 1/2" by 4 yds. It's just a nice flat
cloth of the right width to put in the channel the print head runs back and
forth is. When soaked with Windex and the printer off, I release the head,
pull it over the tape, grab the ends of the tape and pull it back and forth
across the head. I used to use a folded strip of paper towel to do this.

I think you can probably just rinse it off with Windex. I've never replaced
one.

With the printer off, move the gear on the extreme left toward you to
release the head assembly. You'll see a little peg near the bottom of the
head assembly move down, out of the way. Then you can move the head
assembly to the left. This exposes the parking pad. I use a syringe with
Windex in it to rinse the pad. I sometimes use a paper towel to soak up the
Windex-ink mix on the surface.

For unclogging a printer hear, it is sometimes useful to soak the pad and
move the head back over it so that the head sits in the Windex overnight.

Paul, thanks for the reply, I moved the assembly to the cart changing
position with the change ink button, then turned the power off.I
looked for the parking pads and couldn't see them in the room light,
but with a flash light I did see them but theyre way back down in
there. How do you get back down in there with your fingers, theres not
much room to work down in there.Do I need to take the casing off the
printer? Also will plain ol Windex do the trick for the pads?I have not
used this printer in 5 years and it had sat unused with the original
MIS quadtone pre-filled carts in it all this time.I did buy the MIS
purging carts last week along with the UT with eboni carts and ran
multiple cleaning/purging cycles with the purging carts before
installing the inks.Things printed out good till the ink carts got
down below 1/4 full, then the nozzle checks started breaking up and a
purge print showed no ink coming out of the magenta nozzle.I've got a
new set of UT carts coming in the mail next week and am wondering the
next step to take to get back up and running.Overall this printer has
very few hours on it and I'd like to be able to get it running
smoothly if possible.Thanks again.....Chris

I have an 1160 that I thought was ready for the trash heap, but I put
in clear aftermarket carts w/pigment ink, and now it's back in
business.

The trick I found was after removing the CIS, to run several cleaning
cycles of windex through the heads w/blank carts...this unblocked the
system. (Something epson would never suggest, so you would have to
buy one of their new, more expensive printers, BTW.)

Then replaced with new carts, not made by epson thankfully, with
pigment ink, and am back in business. Producing great prints again
w/this printer.

You mean you bought blank carts like the MIS spongeless carts and
filled them up with windex, loaded them like regular carts, and did
cleaning cycles from the control panel?Did you do purge cycles too
with the windex?Did you use regular windex or no drip? Thanks for the tips!

Re: 1160 clog question

First I used empty clear spongeless carts filled with regular windex,
ran several cleaning cycles. Then I removed the carts, filled up a
syringe w/windex, and attached a 1/2 inch long piece of small flexible
clear tubing, and injected the windex down through the posts above the
heads. Not too much pressure, but enough to force out the clog. Place a
folded up paper towel underneath the heads to avoid a mess. Then I
replaced the carts w/UT ink and it worked fine after that. Before all
this the magenta head was totally clogged.

(This whole procedure is explained somewhere else on this board from a
couple years ago, don't remember the specifics...should come up on a
comprehensive search.)
