Other than Epson Heavyweight Matte and Premium Glossy, are there ANY papers out there available in 11X14 size? It's so strange to me that this size, which a I really like, is so hard to find. Thanks Ginny

Hello Ginny, >Other than Epson Heavyweight Matte and Premium Glossy, are there ANY >papers out there available in 11X14 size? It's so strange to me that >this size, which a I really like, is so hard to find. Those few Epson ones are the only ones I've ever seen. My guess is that for most paper makers it's too much extra burden to maintain another product line (production runs, packaging, labor costs, etc) for such a small difference in size compared to 13x19. They may also figure it would result in a drop in net revenue instead of increase, because rather than attract new customers, a certain percent of current customers would opt for the smaller package. I don't see this as evil intent, but merely trying to stay alive in a highly competitive market by supplying what the printers are designed to handle. What I'm not sure of is the origin of the 13x19 size. It's only a guess, but it allows a 1/2" margin around a 12x18 image, of which the 2:3 ratio matches the 35mm and DSLR image ratios. Does anyone know the history of this? Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

Dear Clayton, For me, the difference between 11X14 and 13X19 is very significant. I do not consider it 'small'. Best Ginny PS-My suspicion is that profit has something to do with the manufacturers choice of paper sizes---'profit' meaning, not what will sell the most but that it might have to do with the raw media they are cutting. Just a gut reaction. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Clayton Jones" <cj@...> wrote: > > Hello Ginny, > > >Other than Epson Heavyweight Matte and Premium Glossy, are there ANY > >papers out there available in 11X14 size? Hi Ginny, I use Ilford Smooth Pearl and it exists in the 11"x14" size you are looking for. My personal struggle has to do with DSLRs 3:2 (1.5 aspect ratio) printed on 6:4 (1.5), 7:5 (1.4), 11:8.5 (1.29), 14:11 (1.27) and 19:13 (1.46) papers. I wish I could process the image once and be able to print it easily on standard paper sizes all having the same aspect ratios. How do you guys handle this craziness? Hello, There is more than a handful to be had by seaching paper size on B&H. I don't use premium, but I use the inkpress heavy matte( I wouldn't know a good paper). http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=search&Q=&ci=1118 gar

Red River Papers sells Dourian and Aurora Art in 11 X 14 sizes: two nice, very different, and reasonably priced matte papers.

It's good to know that more papers are being offered in this size, especially a paper like Dourian Art. It's such a good deal already, being 2-sided, and this just makes it even more attractive. Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

Thanks for this tip Jim. I see 3 if since Dourian is available in both natural and white. Could you tell me more about the papers? Also, does anyone else discount them? Hello Pierre, >My personal struggle has to do with DSLRs 3:2 (1.5 aspect ratio) >printed on 6:4 (1.5), 7:5 (1.4), 11:8.5 (1.29), 14:11 (1.27) and >19:13 (1.46) papers. > >I wish I could process the image once and be able to print it easily >on standard paper sizes all having the same aspect ratios. I too have never liked the longer 35mm ratio. In the film days most of my work was with 6x7 and 4x5. But I was never fully satisfied with the 4:5 ratio either and always thought the prints were a bit too fat. When I got into digicams I was happy to discover they all used the 3:4 ratio, which seems perfect. These images look very nice in the standard frame sizes. So for the past 2+ years I've used a Canon Pro-1 (8mp with 3:4 image ratio) and I consider it to be the ideal format. One of the reasons I delayed getting a DSLR was my dislike of the wider 2:3 image. But that's about to change as I'm in line to get one of the new Pentax K10's when they arrive next month. >How do you guys handle this craziness? I'm planning to get a KatzEye focus screen that has etched vertical composition lines for the shorter format. I'm hoping this will help me to compose the way I've gotten used to. In the past I used Epson Premium Semi-Gloss for color images. After seing image samples using this paper I switched. I've never used it for B&W images. I purchased Epson Enhanced Matt for B&W prints for now. I like the Ilford paper but I'm biased from having used Ilford paper for wet development a long time ago. I've seen a few posts around were some have used this paper for B&W but I suspect that is with a photo black carteridge. After reading Clayton's paper review last fall, I ordered a box of the Dourian and a box of the Aurora Art (then not available in the natural). I still have some of the Aurora, but have been through 3-4 boxes of the Dourian. It is off-white (easy to match with a mat), apparently contains little or no optical brightners, and has strong blacks. Because both sides are printable, I rarely have to throw a sheet away. I use EEM for proofing, with no adjustment needed for the Dourian (unlike the Aurora Art). Clayton's review has more detailed information that will give you a feeling for how its characteristics (and Aurora Art's) compare with a number of other papers. I think these papers may be handled exclusively by RR.

My Epson C84 has run like a champ for 2+ years with a MIS CFS and their EZ inks, producing many thousands of lovely B&W prints. But recently it has gotten a little goofy, giving me "parts are nearing the end of their service life" error messages as it decides to stop printing. I tried resetting counters with the Russian utilities but that didn't fix things. Unplugging it for two days got it working again, but I print about 800 8x8 prints for Christmas books and didn't want to get stuck in the middle of that project with a dead printer. So I ordered a refurb C88 from Epson ($59 delivered) after talking to MIS and hearing that the C84 CFS is basically a drop-in for the C88. Today I did the swap, and was rewarded with essentially perfect prints after running the recommended purge patterns. So if any of you have a C84 that's dying (and maybe this is true for the C86 as well), or maybe you just want to be prepared for the day, this is a very simple way to keep going with your EZ system. (NOTE: I don't know if I'd get the same results from a C88+ - not sure what they did to the 88 to make it a +, and didn't ask MIS about moving to that printer.) Cheers, Kip

Obsessive 35mm photogs often wet-darkroom printed 9 X 13.5 on 11X14, when they obsess on full format. 11X17 is for me at an optimum price point and IMO is MUCH more impressive than "11X14" ever was with full 35mm format (eg 10.5 X 16.75)....but it doesn't fit prints into "standard" precut mattes. Less paper wasted with 11X17 full format than 11X14 full format, too. I find 11X17 opens images up FAR better than Letter, while costing a lot less than 13X19. Still, a 4000ppi scan of a fine chrome can be shockingly better at 13X19 than at 11X17 (35mm Astia, with the right lenses, looks like 120 format)....wish I had a bigger printer than my 2200. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "ginnylady33" <ginnylady33@...> wrote:

I'm using a Pentax 6X7, not 35 mm. I am not limiting myself to 11X14. It's just a size that I use for certain images and a size that many people prefer to purchase. I did not want to make this a debate about which size is best. That issue is a matter of taste and tastes vary greatly. Ginny, I didn't mean to be provocative, sorry. If your marketing's grooved into 11X14 for some reason (economical frames/mattes?), and if 11X17's not satisfactory (waste 3" of paper), maybe roll paper's your answer? I shoot 6X7 as well...gorgeous format. Thanks for your comments. As a clarification, I didn't mean to assert that 11X17 is not satisfactory. I use that size a lot. It is readily availalle. I asked about 11X14 because it seems a size hard to find. I never meant to imply that the other commonly found sizes are unsatisfactory. I may be wrong, but I believe it has nothing to do with photographic printing. The size is based in offset printing. It fits an 11 x 17 spread with room for bleeds and all printer's/registration marks. I think it has a European basis, but that's just because it's referred to as "Super B" or "Super A4," and Europeans name all their sheet sizes with letters, rather than with inch dimensions like we do in the US. Their standard page sizes are different than those we use in the US. -- jonathan wills _______ wills design portland, oregon, usa
