Problem with BO Printing on Epson 1400

Problem with BO Printing on Epson 1400

2008-08-15 by Tingxi Tan

Hi, I am very new to Black & White and inkjet printing in general.
Recently I bought an Epson 1400, and ordered the black cartridge from
the UT14 inkset to try my hands on BO printing. The ink came today, I
swapped out the OEM black cartridge for this UT14 Eboni cartridge and
fire up the Epson print test page. The black text turns out very faint
and yellowish. I then run a nozzle check and subsequently 3 cleaning
cycles. This did nothing to improve the faint and yellowish black
text. I am starting to wonder if I made a mistake in not getting the
full UT14 inkset. I am sure the experts on this forum can help me out
here, any advise on how I can get BO printing working will be
wonderful. Thanks.

Be sure the air intake tab or plug has been removed from the MIS
cartridge.

I have never tested in the compatibility of Eboni with Claria inks. If
there are nozzle problems it could be that the Eboni is having trouble
with Claria inks.

Hi Paul,

Sorry for being ignorant but which one is the air intake plug? There
are 2 plugs a black rubber one with a flap that is at the lower end
of the cartridge (looking from the top) and a transparent rubber plug
that is above the black flappy plug.

Remove the one with the flap that is closest to the end of the cart.
It's the air intake. Ink can't exit the cart with the air intake
blocked.

Recall also that commercial carts are vacuum filled. As such, these
plugs should be removed before the carts are installed. Otherwise,
it's possible air will be pulled into the cart through the outlet
when the cart is installed and the outlet seal is broken. So, you
may have air in the outlet that will need to be removed. The fastest
way to do this with with a bottom fill adapter and a syringe.

See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Mod_Bot_Fill.jpg

The bottom fill adapters are $0.50 items from MIS.

A sharp scissor can cut the bevel on the end.

Good luck with the system.

Re: Problem with BO Printing on Epson 1400

Thanks for the help, it is working now, however I tested it on a brand
new cartridge. When this one runs out, I will switch back to the
"faulty" one to make sure that it is indeed the air intake plug problem.

On another note, the Eboni works perfectly with Claria inks. The
workflow is also very simple, no icc in the image at all. I just
select the BO curve in QTR for EEM and the default print is more of
less WYSIWYG. Slight tuning from the Gamma and Ink sliders makes the
print more representative.

Banding is a problem though. Larger prints (8x10) do exhibit slight
banding towards the initial part of the print. I have not gone through
extra cleaning cycles to try to fix it yet. Any advises on getting rid
of banding? It is a brand new 1400 so I reckon clog head is not the
problem yet.

Good, I wasn't sure about this. The old dyes were a problem for
Eboni in the 1280.

Banding in the first and last 1" is common with lots of printers.
The printers with the "vertical" head (1400, 220, C88+) and those
with 1.5 pl drops are particularly affected. They really need both
the main and exit rollers to be engaged for best smoothness.

This type of banding is a paper transport problem that will probably
be worse with thick papers and probably cannot be fixed.

If the banding is taking place when both of these rollers are
engaged -- in the central part of an 8x10 -- and assuming perfect
nozzles and good alignemnt, then I'd be more worried that the printer
was not one of the better samples. I only have a sample of one, and
that one can print a very good black only in a 7 x 9 inch print on
letter size paper.
