Watch Out Upgraders from LP 7x Academic!

Watch Out Upgraders from LP 7x Academic!

2007-09-15 by Michael Sirotta

To those who have been using LP 7 academic version, a warning, if purchasing $199.00
upgrade to Logic Studio from the Apple Store: nowhere on the web site is this mentioned,
but users of an "Academic" version of LP 7x WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EXECUTE THE UPGRADE
even though Apple will happily sell you the upgrade package without the appropriate
warning.

There's a lot about this issue now on Apples LP8 discussion board <http://
discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5330274\ufffd>. Some "academics"
have purchased the upgrade, have opened the box, experienced a failed installation, and are
now on the phone with customer support trying to get their money back.

"Academic" owners will simply have to spring for the full version at $499, or, for some
discount, buy a new academic version of the Studio at $449.99 ($50 savings)

Be warned.

Michael

I thought that it was common knowledge that the sole reason that developers
are willing to give discounts on academic versions of their software is
precisely -because- it's non-upgradeable. I guess that knowledge was not as
common as I thought....

Usually true, altho some companies do offer academic upgrades. However, there's a
possible wrinkle in the Logic issue:

>if your XSkey says "retail" you can upgrade; if it says "academic" you cannot.
from a post at the Big Blue Lounge

It seems that some people got a retail XSkey with their academic Logic 7, while others got
an academic one.

I'd love to hear from anyone who actually proved this distinction to be true!

I think that is not only not the sole reason, but not even the
primary reason. Academic discounts are attempts to get to users
early, before they've had a chance to commit to a competing platform,
to make life-long users out of them. Emapple has made way more
money selling me upgrades than they did selling me the original
product. I agree that most of the time purchases at academic pricing
are not upgradeable, but sometimes they are.

It's just a matter of how greedy the company wants to be. I bought
Dreamweaver and Fireworks from Macromedia for a third the non-
academic price, so it makes sense that I would have to pay full price
for the next version. I don't know how much people on this list paid
for their "academic" versions of Logic, but these days at Apple,
academic prices are roughly 90-95% of full sale price. If that
doesn't make you eligible for upgrades, then it would make more sense
for students and teachers to buy competing products that offer either
upgradeability or a steeper student discount.

I'm not saying that I think Logic's academic license IS upgradeable,
just that it shouldn't be a foregone conclusion that it isn't.

Although, I bought 7.0 as an academic version and, if I remember correctly, had to pay an
upgrade price to get to the current version, which worked OK.

Here's another quote from a thread on the BigBlue:

>sticker and there was no "Academic" in the splash when loading.

>Upgraded to LP8 no problem.

This is strange. I definately purchased an academic version and remember seeing
"Academic" in the splash screen in the past. I hadn't noticed recently, but after several
upgrades of v.7 plus two replaced dongles, the "academic" splash screen is now gone and
the newest dongle has "retail" imprinted on the back.

Does this mean that getting a new dongle promotes you to the "retail" class?

Hmmm...

Doesnt have anything to do with the dongle normally. It was all about
the activation code you typed into the dongle at first that determines
whether its Academic/Retail/NFR/etc.. I still have an old blue Emagic
one though, perhaps it was different with the newer white Apple branded
dongles.

I spoke to Apple today because I definately want to move to LP8. I explained the situation
as described in the quoted posting below. I asked if the upgrade offer would work for me
and I was told (with a secretive, but congratulatory tone on the part of the Apple
representative): "Enjoy the software".

Does this mean that those who purchased LP7 'academic' will migrate to 'retail' if they
order a new dongle for $100?

Hmmm... $100 dongle + $200 Upgrade price beats the $500 full purchase price.
Hmmm...
