Core Audio/MOTU 828 problems

Core Audio/MOTU 828 problems

2008-05-16 by Tim McLane

Until I got my Intel Mac, I had no problems with audio. Now,
everything is haywire and I don't know what the cause is. The sound
keeps cutting off without warning and there is much crackling, popping
and cutting out which I see reflected in the analog activity lights of
the MOTU. I thought for a while that it was a problem with the 828
until I noticed that when I used Quicktime or iTunes --- no problems.

Then I started getting a Audio Driver Error 25974 --- I don't know
what that means, either, but after searching it seemed that starting
the core audio separately from Logic might help.

I only have Logic 8, Ivory, MOTU ethno and symphonic and Spectrasonics
RMX. Do I need DAE or TDM?

Any suggestions on solving my audio that is cutting out every time I
turn around. I almost bought another audio interface until I realized
there is probably nothing wrong with the one I have.

Let me know ---I've been going through this for weeks and I'm
desperate. I've even considered doing the 1on1 thing and hanging out
with one of the Mac Geniuses --- but I don't know if I want to gamble
their fee vs their knowledge of peripherals.

Regards,

T

Just to chime in, ever since Logic 8 came out, it drops my Motu 828 suddenly as well. I get
crackles and pops [probably looking sync rate] the interface flashes from 44k to 48k and
gets "stuck'. Sometimes a re-boot helps, sometimes not. Some days it works, some days
it doesn't. I also use the Motu 828 for my audio out on the mac [watching quicktime,
streaming iTunes music] the problem happens ONLY in Logic 8. There is not patch [yet?]
on the Motu site. It's possible that the 828 is unsupported or a low priority since they
released their newer boxes..

Thanks, Man.

So, you're telling me it only happens with the MOTU 828--not with any
of their other interfaces? On one hand, though irritating, I have
been able to co-exist with this problem; but on the other, it
certainly doesn't sound professional and it is maddening that I
sometimes have to sit there and wait for a reboot or something. I'd
hate to spend anything on another interface but I'm wondering how
important it is to get rid of this popping and cracking. I just did a
string session and had to make the musicians go back for only one take
---it really wasn't a big deal.

You know, further thoughts are that it has something to do with intel
Macs; I never had any of this when I had my G5 ---- and with one huge
problem after another, I'm SERIOUSLy thinking of going back to my G5.

Core Audio/MOTU 828 problems also

2008-05-17 by Tim McLane

I was wondering: has anyone had any problems with other MOTU
interfaces? I'm considering the MOTU 828 mkII ---but I don't want
more of the same MOTU problems that I've had with my 828. Have you
guys had any experiences with other MOTU interfaces? What interfaces
have worked well for intel Macs AND Logic 8?

TIm,

With my MOTU 8-pre I sometimes get that going on when certain firewire drives are
attached. Some don't cause problems some do.

My popping and crackle is between the interface and a digital mixer. But, I'm pretty sure
it's the firewire variable in the equation that determines whether things go haywire or not.

Maybe that's it for you, maybe not?

Pete

I'm on an intel Mac with Tiger and Logic 8, and I've had a few
problems with Core Audio, where very occasionally when I launch Logic
I get no sound, and if I launch Audio/Midi it hangs. It hasn't
happened lately, and when it did, a reboot fixed the problem. I've
had none of the other problems people here have described though.

I usually use my Firepod, but occasionally fire up the old 828, and
haven't had any problems with it at all. Here's my version numbers
on everything. Do you have the same setup?

Mac Pro 2x2GHz Dual-Core Xeon
Mac OS 10.4.11
Logic 8.01
MOTU Audio Setup 1.4

Audio Prefs: 16-bit, 44.1kHz, 64 sample buffer

I'll certainly try by disconnecting the firewire drives and see f that
helps. I''m so desperate that I'm on the point of getting either
another interface or my old G5 ---

thanks!

Are you guys talking about the first 828, the 828 MK II, or the new
828 MK III??

I'm having problems with the MOTU 828, ie, the very first 828.

Hey Greg,

I have close but not the same:
Mac Mini 1.83 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
Mac OS 10.5.2
Logic 8.0.1
MOTU Audio set up 1.4.7

I"m also thinking that the Leopard OS might be the problem...someone
told me that if I downgraded to Tiger, that might solve problems.
Maybe the Mac Mini is too small ---I really don't know but I'm willing
---at this strained point where my studio is almost not working at
all---to try anything.

Now, if it is the Core audio --- I don't know what to do. Is there
something else I can use?

Re: [Logic_Cafe] Core Audio/MOTU 828 problems also

2008-05-17 by Jon Scordia

Hi list, I posted about this a few weeks ago and no-one popped up with
exactly the same problem, though this all seems related.

I've had problems with an Edirol FA-101 Firewire interface since I
upgraded to an Intel Mac Pro, using Leopard.

The interface causes a Kernel panic if switched on after the Mac is
on, or when the Mac comes out of sleep and the FA-101 is already on.

I was not able to figure whether this was an Intel Mac or Leopard
issue. I found a thread on the Apple Forums (I think) which suggested
that it was a 'known issue' that was caused by a combination of both.
I'm hoping that The coming 10.5.3 upgrade will sort us all out!

By the way, I have an original Motu 2408 interface and PCI card,
rescued out of my old G4 AGP, and am pretty sure that it will not be
compatible with the Mac Pro. Is it still possible to obtain compatible
PCI cards separately?

Thanks!

I totally think it's Leopard. My first solution would be to move
back to Tiger and see what happens. I haven't tried Leopard yet, but
have heard of many glitches using it. That's definitely cheaper than
getting a G5 or new interface, and is the only real difference
between our setups. No way the mini is too small. These intel
machines are so overpowered it's ridiculous. I have an iMac with
original Core Duo, and it runs everything I throw at it. Switch back
to Tiger immediately and I'll bet your probs go away.

2008-05-17 by Gil Gillian

Hi, I may be totally off track here, but, when I upped from 7 to 8
there were various problems with files and structures used by 7 that
are not deleted by 8, but are replaced by other directories. This
would be fine except that some of the core audio and midi stuff looks
at the old 7 files, which caused a few problems until I'd found and
deleted them. The other thing that springs to mind is any drivers -
always worth checking that the latest drivers (relevant to the device
and the operating system) are installed. One other thing, a previosu
post mentioned soemthing about sample rate locking; perhaps a word
clock interface issue? Hope you find the holy grail. I'm using MOTU
2408 with Tascam DM-24 and G5 Dual and it runs faultlessly.

Good luck,
Gil Gillian

Leopard --- I think you're convicted! I have heard this from a number
of people, so it looks like downgrading to Tiger will be top on my
agenda.

Thanks.

Actually, I never had problems when I went from 7 to 8. I did check
all the drivers and to be accurate, it solved a number of problems ---
unfortunately not the big one: the MOTU. So, I'll try Tiger and see
if that works.

Thanks.

Re: Core Audio/MOTU 828 problems also / Intel or G5?

2008-05-17 by Man Parrish

Actually mine is happening on my G5 ever since Logic 8.....!
I think its Logic and not the computer hardware. I CAN listen to other stuff like quicktime
and such. It could also be a system OS [10.5.2] problem, either way, it's apple... lol!
