That reminds me of a question: does the P3 respect Song Pointer?

I was going to say that MIDI sequencers (the software multitrack kind)
have been syncing to MIDI clock for years - nay, decades - but I
forgot that these days they do audio. I don't see why they shouldn't
still sync to MIDI, since I suspect they run their audio soundbites in
some kind of constant rate "fire-and-forget" mode - I think Performer
has an option for configuring this - and the audio between multiple
tracks should be locked in a sample-accurate manner anyway.

But having said that, the whole concept of an audio sequencer locked
to MIDI feels decidedly iffy. (On the other hand, SMPTE lockup can't
be that different, and it often translates down to a MIDI transport
protocol in any case.)

Multitrack software thatll sync *to* the p3?

2005-08-16 by Julian

With this talk of logic and sync problems earlier...

I just want some computer software to multitrack on to. Thats my primary concern.

I like the interface of the latter versions of cubase (sx and the like) but most of these type of things will only act as a sync master when using midi clock, not as a sync slave.

Now id *really* *much* prefer to use the p3 as the clock master.

Does anyone know of any software with a nice interface that will sync to external clock? I believe acid will, but, and please dont ask me exactly why, but i find the unchangeable font that it uses hard to read.

Thankyou, Julian

I think Ableton Live will. But remember that it will probably start at
the beginning of the track everytime you hit start on the P3.

Demo is fully featured, but no saves, at www.ableton.de

Reason syncs nicely to the P3 too, but that particular peice of software
won't allow you to record multitrack audio. Yet.

Oops - Ableton was the one i was talking about when i actually said acid...

It looks as if itll do the job, but i just find it hard to see. I know you
learn your way arround things, but its an irritation.

I gave up on that. I just play now - in one pass - and sod the sync. I
sync stuff later in Wavelab by eye and ear. Works really well
actually.

Yep. MIDI clock is not really stable enough to sync a DAW from.

Cubase VST does. But if you need audio in your DAW then few more
recent programs will allow this kind of sync...

It ignores it.
Since P3 is loop based, with potentially 8 different polyrhythms across its
tracks, and self-modification of pattern lengths and positions as well as
accumulated offsets on note, velocity and auxes, it would be an arduous task
to calculate where everything should be at an arbitrary point during
playback.

Colin,

Ill tell you what would be real nice -

A menu where you can set the song position, and then whenever the p3s play
button is hit the relevent data is sent out simply counting on from this
manually set position.

When stop is pressed, it just resets to the position set in the menu, and
then starts counting on at the correct tempo when play is hit again.

That would allow anything to be synced to the p3 fine, would it not?

That's what I thought, but I thought I'd ask.

However: since it presumably responds to START (as in: go from
1|1|000) then it has some notion of resetting (in terms of some kind
of global bar sync)?

I seem to recall from somewhere that it treats CONTINUE as START, so I
guess one can record a P3 into a software sequencer just by lining up
to some notional first bar line, whereever it might be in the piece.

I suppose I'm just going to have to buy a P3 to find out...

That makes sense; if I were recording a long piece of music, and
wanted some hot P3 action from (say) bar 201|1|000, I'd turn that
option on, stop the P3, locate to that bar, and hit RECORD...

ableton live offers some really tight sync... it's even got parameters you
can monkey with to make it as tight as possible.

bleep.

There is an option to treat continue as start, but in normal use, P3 will
continue from the global bar position is was stopped at in response to a
continue.
The 'start on continue' option was requested by a user of some PC sequencing
package for reasons I can't really remember - I think it was sending a
continue when restarting from a bar position.
Not having used a PC based sequencer in anger for years, I'm not too well
clued up on their peculiarities.

Colin

Is the 'suspended start' mode still on the TBI list, as discussed
back in May 04; where the P3 would track incoming midi clock but
would not actually start running until you hit start and then it
would start on the next global bar or beat.

I'd really like that feature, as currently the P3 always starts each
time I hit play on my AW16G multitracker which is set as master.

Cheers

it is true that the P3 will return to Bar 1 every time you hit run...

however, if you are in Ableton Live and set a loop point...Ableton will seamlessly loop
between these points while your P3 is running the show...

Great discovery from last night: if you have Reason running through Rewire...Reason will
loop too without problems with the P3 as the master!!!

(this is absolutely huge...anyone who is a bigtime Reason user knows that...when syncing
to the host software such as Logic or Ableton...Reason will quite often stop once it hits the
end of a loop point...i love Reason and this issue was just killing me...it seems using the
P3 as the master has solved it!!!)

p.s. Within this setup...you can also load software plugs such as Reaktor and it will
perfectly sync as well (which as...as you might have guessed by now...also been a problem)

What the P3 is doing to my setup is just so splendid! if you are thinking about buying one
do it!!
