NRPN's with SX3

NRPN's with SX3

2006-03-28 by kmxe

ive tried and tried for the past week to control SX3 parameters via
NRPN's to take advantage of the "14 bit resolution". Now, im not
very good with MIDI, so im not even sure if im wording things
correctly. This is the settings ive tried:

MIDI Date Type: NRPN
Send channel: 1
NRPN no.: 1

Ctrl Mode: Absolute 14bit (ive tried all the other just in case)

in SX3 via the Generic Remote

MIDI Input: BCR2000

MIDI Status: CTRL NRPN
MIDI Channel: 1
Address: 1
Flags: R,T

Since i havent done this before, ive basically taken an educated
guess based on me being able to control the parameters via CC's, and
whatever i can find on the net.

i need someone to set the record straight for me, im losing sleep
over this!!!!!

In SX, open the "Devices" drop down menu, select "Device Setup", then in the
left portion of this window select "Remote Devices > Generic Remote".

Then, read the part of the SX help file entitled "The Generic Remote" to
learn how to tell Cubase what to do when it receives information on each CC#
that you want to use to control SX.

Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-03-29 by kmxe

hi eric, thanks for the reply. i already know how to tell cubase
what to do via CC's. ive had no probs with this - it's using NRPN's
that i'm having problems with. i had a guy via MSN tell me step by
step what he does, and i set it up exactly like my first post - for
him it worked, for me it hasn't. i'm wondering if there is a way to
prove or disprove that my BCR is faulty. ive read and re-read both
manuals and cannot find anything else that im not doing. as per my
post, im already trying to set things up via the generic remote.

do you have any ideas as to what I could be doing wrong? if a person
on the other side of the world set up his system which worked, and
then gave me the exact same settings and it didnt work, i can only
conclude that it's either i have some settings or preferences thats
preventing me making this work, or the unit is faulty. if there is a
third possibility - i cant think of it.

Use the process that I described in my previous post in order to set up NRPN
control. Consult the help feature for info about how to set this up, under
the term that I cited in my last post.

Re: [bc2000] Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-03-29 by Erik Bowen

Are you updated to the latest version of the BCR OS? Do you have Java 1.4
instead of 1.5? (You want Java 1.4) Are you sure that you have been
successful in loading the configuration that you designed using BCEdit to
the BCR? The only easy way for you to test is to attempt to control some
other program via NRPN's, and see if it doesn't work anywhere.. if it
doesn't work on multiple systems, then I'd bring it back into where you
bought it and have them check it out, or call Behrenger tech support and
tell them your story and they will probably walk you through testing whether
the unit is malfunctioning or not.

RE: [bc2000] Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-03-30 by Elea

Hi Kmxe

Cubase SX Generic Remote commits mistakes when recording the assignment
script (xml file). I don't know if this is your problem but give it a try:

Open the xml file with Notepad. There are 2 sections: the first one begins
with:

<ctrltable name="Standard MIDI">

And finishes with

</ctrltable>

It defines the BCR/BCF buttons/faders/knobs and their Midi assignment. All
your NRPN buttons/knobs should look something like this:

<ctrl><name>Fader
1</name><stat>2</stat><chan>0</chan><addr>900</addr><max>999</max><flags>19<
/flags></ctrl>

Underlined is the adress for this controller. This is the adress you give
your button/knob when configuring it in BC-Edit (or manually).

In bold, you can see what defines NRPN 14bits controllers. Cubase SX Generic
Remote sometimes does not write these correctly to the xml file. So if you
want NRPN 14 bits you need stat set to 2 and flags set to 19. If you want
normal CCs or other standard Midi controller stat needs to be 176 and flags
3.

Of course this is completely useless if it's not mirrored on your unit.
Let's say you have set the first knob to be a 14 bits encoder in Cubase, but
on your unit it's set to a CC, needless to say things won't work.

So first decide what your unit is going to be like, program it either with
BC-Edit or manually so that the controllers on your xml file will match the
unit's. Then assign these controllers to Cubase Generic Remote either
entering them or using the function Learn. Check the xml file in Notepad.
Then assign functions in Cubase. This is done in the second section of the
xml file. It begins with

<bank name="mybankname">

And finishes with

</bank>

Good luck

Elea

Hey Elea,

Good stuff, the Cubase XML MIDI Primer.

Any tips on MMC with Cubase and XML?
I have trouble getting the transport features working. The sliders and
other controls are fine. Just not the MMC ADAT transport. Is there an
XML file parameters for transport controls?

Thanks,

Steve M

Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-03-31 by kmxe

Hi Elea,

this is exactly what was happening. actually i got some help from
this guy in Canada who has been trying to help me. Eventually he
sent me a template for SX3 as a basic 8channel mixer control.
Needless to say it worked. I compared the 2 .xml files in word pad
and noticed the difference in the flags numbering. when i changed
my .xml file with these same numbers, it worked. ive been trying to
find a logical explanation for this, but i guess there is no logic -
Cubase just screws this part up. Is this a known bug?

anyways, now i have a problem with my push/rotary knob #6 in encoder
group 1. It doesnt matter what i assign it to it doesnt work. im
trying to figure out what could be causing it, but the more tests i
do, the more i think i have a faulty unit.

Another thing, this guy from Canada, set up the 1st 8 push
button/rotary knobs (encoder group 1) to select the audio track
(between 1-8). So by pressing the 2nd knob in encoder group 1, Audio
track 2 is selected. However, it doesnt always work properly. what
sometimes happens is that i press 1 of these push/rotary knobs (say
number 3) and sx3 selects audio track 3, but then it would select
audio track 2, and sometimes bounce back to audio track 3 - this is
all with 1 press of the push/rotary knob. its almost as if sx3
receives a message from 1 of the other push/rotary knobs to select a
different track. i wonder if you could try to set up 1 row of your
push/rotary knobs to select audio tracks, and see if the same thing
happens to you.

i cannot think of why it would jump between selecting tracks.... it
just doesnt make sense.

That's weird. I take it you are using Cubase transport controls to trigger
the Adat right?

Cheers

Hey Elea,

Good stuff, the Cubase XML MIDI Primer.

Any tips on MMC with Cubase and XML?
I have trouble getting the transport features working. The sliders and
other controls are fine. Just not the MMC ADAT transport. Is there an
XML file parameters for transport controls?

Thanks,

Steve M

RE: [bc2000] Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-03-31 by Elea

Hi Kmxe

The xml thing is a known bug. For some reason Cubase Sx Generic Remote
commits mistakes when transcribing the script. It'll probably be fixed in
next version.

About your Knob #6, make sure it is really assigned to the controller you
want. If you haven't changed the Learn/Edit/Store/Exit Function buttons,
check manually in the unit if the assignment is really correct. If not,
reset the unit and BC-Edit and see if BC-Edit shows the correct parameters
when reading your unit.

Another important thing is: do you have the latest Behringer Midi Drivers
and Firmware. Check the website and make sure you do.

The thing you describe about the push encoders happens to mine too. I think
it isn't the unit, I think it's Cubase. And I'll tell you why: When you use
Mackie Control Emulation mode (which I really recommend. After doing
templates and stuff I finally ended using it) it doesn't happen. Mackie
Control Emulation mode uses HUI protocol. When you use the Generic Remote
Mode it happens. I just think the Cubase Generic Remote protocol is not yet
fully implemented and developped. It is very recent too. They'll eventually
fix it.

I've found that the only thing you can do about it is just to wait for it to
stop "dancing around". :-)

Do you use a USB connection? Try using a Midi connection only (S-4 mode) and
see if it happens again. USB connection many times gives errors. I began
having an error from BC-Edit when trying to transfer sysex files. After a
lot of trying and searching I found out that in S-4 mode and Midi connection
only it works fine. So when I want toconfigure the unit I switch to Midi!!

Cheers

Hi Elea,

this is exactly what was happening. actually i got some help from
this guy in Canada who has been trying to help me.

Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-04-02 by kmxe

hi Elea,

i hope its a free update, im not keen on paying for something for 1
little bug fix!

knob#6 - this was kinda strange. the problem ended up being the CC
that it was transmitting. From memory i think it was 38 - as soon as
it was changed to something else, it worked. Are there particular
CC's that SX3 reserve/doesnt like? but in either case, its no longer
a problem.

> The thing you describe about the push encoders happens to mine
too. I think
> it isn't the unit, I think it's Cubase.

perfect! you know what you have done for me? you've saved me brining
this unit to the store i bought it from (more than an hour away) for
the support guy to test it out overnight. at least you've cleared
this up. i was testing it by assigning these push encoders to mute
instead and it worked, so i couldnt work out why audio track select
mucks up.

Mackie Emulation - where do i get this? Ive been trying to find it.
And also this LCD soft display - i would like these (i think)! i
remember reading that the Mackie Emulation was only available for
the BCF.... but if its available for the BCR, and is highly
recommened by users then ill give it a go. can you point me in the
right direction?

thanks for clearing up some stuff... i can stop pulling my hair out
now!

little bug fix!

knob#6 - this was kinda strange. the problem ended up being the CC
that it was transmitting. From memory i think it was 38 - as soon as
it was changed to something else, it worked. Are there particular
CC's that SX3 reserve/doesnt like? but in either case, its no longer
a problem.

too. I think

perfect! you know what you have done for me? you've saved me brining
this unit to the store i bought it from (more than an hour away) for
the support guy to test it out overnight. at least you've cleared
this up. i was testing it by assigning these push encoders to mute
instead and it worked, so i couldnt work out why audio track select
mucks up.

Mackie Emulation - where do i get this? Ive been trying to find it.
And also this LCD soft display - i would like these (i think)! i
remember reading that the Mackie Emulation was only available for
the BCF.... but if its available for the BCR, and is highly
recommened by users then ill give it a go. can you point me in the
right direction?

thanks for clearing up some stuff... i can stop pulling my hair out
now!

Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-04-03 by kmxe

Hey,

i managed to find them, thanks for that. How the hell do you set it
up? Could you give me a step by step on this? ive installed the
programs, but im unsure as to how im to set up each part.

also, with the .NET Framework - does this force your XP to add a new
account to accomodate for this .NET Framework? Ive installed it, and
when i rebooted - i had to choose a user (i didnt set up my PC like
this beforehand)!

after reading the (very brief) instructions that came with the
huskerview, im guessing that i have to change some settings in the
MIDIOX program, which will allow the huskervu to 'see' this virtual
midi port - i have no idea how to do this.

with the mackie emulation - do i just load the sysex file (for
cubase) into the BCR, then add a 'Mackie' remote in the Devices page
in cubase? Ive done this - and the resulting page in the
cubase/devices screen looks bizaare to me. in either case, it seems
i have to have the MIDIOX setup properly first before i can use this
emulation - please help (again)!!!!!

RE: [bc2000] Re: NRPN's with SX3

2006-04-03 by Elea

1-The KVR forum has ALL the info you need. You can always register and ask
there too.

2-I use a BCF2000, so I don't use huskervu (I run it in Mackie Mode), but I
have tried it and it works. I didn't need to make any extra account. The
only thing that happens is that you get that User window when you start up.
Nothing's perfewct I suppose. You can always email Husker and ask him if
there's a way around that. He's a very nice dude.

3-Are you sure you need Midi-OX for huskervu? Is it not Midi Yoke? Email
Husker.

4-For the Mackie Emu Mode with the BCR, try email Namihei. I guess you
choose Mackie Control in Cubase after sending the sysex to one of the BCR
presets, but it's only my guess.

Sorry I can't help you more, but you'll find answers at the KVR

Hey,

i managed to find them, thanks for that.
