HI Guys first time here first time anywhere yahoo land. Listen i was brought up on analog tape and outboard synths I bought this bcr 2000 so i could use it to edit the internal paramaters on my roland mks50 and oberheim matrix 6r and roland d550....

I have downloaded and installed bc manager and downloaded the mks50 preset text and syx ex file..But I just dont have enough computer nouse on how now to put that preset into bc manager and throw it over to my new bcr 2000.

I would very much appreciatte someone taking a small amount of time and just go through the basics of setting it up..I have read the manual and its still a bit chinese for me..Please help if you can/...

Simple language and steps to get the bcr contolling my mks-50..once i have done it and understand it for the mks i am sure i will be right to get it going for my other synths...looking fdorward to your help sorry for being a little computer illiterate..BUT i am ready to learn..in return any questions on analogue tape you want answered fire away..Thanks

Hi,

You can use BC Manager in USB or Standalone mode but Mark recommends use U-4 mode for USB and S-1 for Standalone to avoid problems.

Best,

Alex

Hey alex..thanks so much for your reply i was beginning to feel out on my own in yahoo land..Listen i have got the bcr talking to my mks 50..I wouldn't say i am in anyway shape or form across..bc manager but sussed enough out to load the bc2 file then export settings across to the bcr..
NEXT prob..

The bcr only seems to be controlling some parameters of the mks eg chorus on off..but i cant find anything that will change the env times up or down..are these simply not mapped in this mks patch or am i doing something wrong??

thanks again for all help

Re: newbie

2012-02-14 by peterobrian@ymail.com

Hello everyone, need some help setting up my bcr2000 to talk with my mks-50 using BC Manager.

Here's my studio configuration:

-computer

-midi keyboard usb to computer

-mbox 3 audio interface usb to computer

-maudio midisport 2x2 midi interface usb to computer

-roland mks-50 midi in to maudio midi out B

-bcr2000 usb to computer

-bcr2000 midi out A to maudio midi in B

-bcr2000 in u-3 operation mode

so i when i start the bc manager, i go to options/midi devices, enable bcr2000 port 1 and midisport 2x2 midi in b and midi out b on input and output and go to b-control.

then i create new bcr2000, once created, i go to midi/options, and select bcr2000 port 1 for both input and output, press OK and bc manager recognizes my bcr2000 1.10...

then go to presets and import my mks50 sysex file, OK, i can see the preset, then i go to midi/send and the bcr200 start to blick, it seems that the presets has loaded ok in the bcr hardware....

but now when i move encoders on the bcr the mks doesnt do anything.... if anyone could tell me what im missing or if im doing something wrong... thanks in advance...im getting a bit mad :)

Thanks,
J

When you move the encoders, do these encoders (and the BCR's display) respond as intended?
You should realize that when moving the encoders you're always working with the BCR's "temporary" preset (a.k.a. "preset 0").
See questions 43-45 (pp. 94-95) in the FAQ section of BC Manager Manual.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

Hello Mark, thanks for the quick reply

yes, it seems that the enconders work in the right way, i.e. the first encoder in the upper row has a value of 0 to 3, the second 0 to 3, the fourth 0 to 5 the fifth 0-127.... and when i move them i can see the leds and the value change in the bcr display, definitely it seems that is working ok but the mks doesnt do anything... (i.e. the first encoder is the dco range so i should hear a change in the sound)

J

OK, then it's probably a totally different problem.

Maybe you can verify that the BCR actually sends the intended MIDI messages:
E.g. in BC Manager, from the main window, open the "MIDI input messages" window (3rd icon on the toolbar); press "Record" there and start moving encoders.
If the expected messages appear in the window, the problem is definitely not with the BCR's setup (in particular the preset), but with the connection to the MKS or the setup of the MKS itself (maybe the wrong MIDI channel?).

Mark.

Re: newbie

Hello,

i've verified that the expected midi messages are sent as can be seen in
the image

http://oi39.tinypic.com/zlwxzt.jpg

also i have connected the mks directly to the bcr2000, without the midi
interface. bcr2000 midi out A to mks50 midi in and i have noticed
something weird.

when i go to cubase and add a midi track and route the out to the
bcr2000 port, the only port where i can play the mks is the bcr2000 port
2, but in the BC manager the only where the bcr firmware is recognized
is the bcr2000 port 1 (in and out)

http://oi41.tinypic.com/9asabc.jpg

http://oi44.tinypic.com/2he9ezs.jpg

any idea about this? maybe it is related to the mks and bcr comm problem

@yatlabatla, i guess you are using a mks50 software editor and the bcr,
and you have midi learnt every parameter of the editor to map to the
bcr, thats a solution but its not what im looking for, thanks :)

Regards,

J

Last news,

i have reinstalled the usb midi driver and now instead the bcr2000 port 1/2/3 i have just 1 port called BCR2000 , so i have configured bc manager with this port but still no comm with the mks.

when monitoring with the midi input meter i see activity when movin encoders and the correct sysex strings in the midi input messages :(

the mks has sysex receive enabled since i have uploaded sysex files to it before...

Re: [bc2000] Re: newbie

At this point I would record some automation into cubase. Then check all the midi settings are correct in cubase and try and get that automation out to the mks. It sounds to me like the problem is between Cubase and the mks. Sorry to hear this is taking so long to solve.

Whenever the BCR is in a U-mode (U-1/2/3/4), the BCR's OWN output (such as the messages intended for the MKS) goes to the USB cable and from there to "BCR2000 port 1" on the computer, NOT to the BCR's "real" MIDI output sockets A and B.

For instance, if the BCR is in Operating Mode U-3, Behringer's USB driver for Windows 7 defines the following devices on the computer:

Input:
BCR2000 port 1 = messages from the BCR itself
BCR2000 port 2 = messages from the BCR's MIDI IN
BCR2000 port 3 = UNUSABLE DUMMY

Output:
BCR2000 port 1 = messages to the BCR itself
BCR2000 port 2 = messages to the BCR's MIDI OUT A
BCR2000 port 3 = messages to the BCR's MIDI OUT B/THRU

I think this explains all the behavior you observed.

To send the BCR's messages to the MKS at MIDI OUT A, there are 2 setups you could use:

1. Put the BCR in an S-mode (1/2/3/4).
However, the USB connection doesn't work in this case, so you can't use Cubase or BC Manager to talk to the BCR or MKS (at least not via USB).

2. Put the BCR in U-3 and make a "soft thru" on the computer, i.e. make a computer program route back the BCR's output to MIDI OUT A.
Maybe you can set up Cubase to achieve this, otherwise MIDI-OX will do this.
(Unfortunately, BC Manager's "Thru" facility currently only works for Channel messages, not for SysEx messages such as the ones you want to send to the MKS.)

For all routing details of the different Operating Modes, see the Behringer manual for the BCR. You might also look at the diagrams in the "Global setup" dialog box (accessible from the "Global Setups" window) in BC Manager.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

Hey Mark!

that works! so i load the preset into bcr then i change to s-1 mode and thats it, i move the encoders and mks responds just right :)

thanks for your help,

Sorry Lem, not me. But what is it you want to do? I'm sure it'll be doable somehow.

Hello!

is there a way if you have a hardware synth connected to the bcr, the synth send the value of a parameter and the led in the bcr goes to the position of that value? (e.g attack in the synth patch is set to 64, so the bcr encoder that is set to attack, goes to the middle automatically when you select that patch)

J

First of all, of course the synth must be able to send its parameter values: either the whole bunch when you select a synth patch, or an individual parameter when you turn its knob on the synth.

Secondly, the encoder/button on the BCR must be defined via the "standard output" protocol (as it's called in BC Manager).
A BCR encoder/button does not respond to incoming messages that address its "custom output" definition; this rules out SysEx (System Exclusive) messages (F0 ... F7).
So effectively the synth must send its parameter values as MIDI Channel messages (typically Control Change or NRPN).

So if your synth only uses SysEx messages, parameter feedback from the synth to the BCR is impossible, and the only way to synchronize the synth and the BCR is to work from the BCR:

You could put different synth patches into different BCR presets, each with different "Default" values for all the parameters.
There are two tricks you can then use:

1. Enable "Request" in each preset (see the "Settings" tab in BC Manager's "Preset" dialog box) and include the correct Program Change message in the preset's "LEARN output".
Thus, the synth will select the corresponding patch whenever you select the preset on the BCR.

2. Enable "Snapshot" in each preset (see the "Settings" tab in BC Manager's "Preset" dialog box).
Thus, the synth will receive all the current preset's parameters, i.e. all your manual, temporary alterations to the patch defaults.
(This works because the BCR remembers the current values of each of its 32 presets even when you switch to another preset.)

Hope this helps,
Mark.
