Help! Serious Concern re Possible Defect in Yamaha Grands

Help! Serious Concern re Possible Defect in Yamaha Grands

2006-05-09 by manhattanboy100

Hi, I am about to purchase a brand new Yamaha C2 with the disklavier
feature. The piano arrived at the dealer and it is now set up in the
showroom (for tuning etc). When I examined the piano closely I noticed
that the light colored horizontal wood panelling below the strings is
not perfectly flat and smooth to the touch, but the wood strips have
raised ridges between them, almost like the "cupping" that occurs when
hardwood floor strips become damaged from water. Its as though the
strips are too compressed against one another resulting in raised
edges. Other pianos (both Yamaha and other brands) that I looked at in
the showroom did not have this problem. The boards are flat and
smooth. The salesperson could not explain but agreed to look into it.
Has anyone encountered this? Is this a defect in the piano? Could this
be a moisture or humidity problem? Should I be concerned? Thanks!!

Hello,

I would sure be concerned....and probably pass on this piano and wait for the next one....I just checked my piano and the board is smooth. There are grain lines running the length of the board but it is smooth. Hope this helps. We have had our 5foot 6 for about 10 years with no problems what so ever.

What you are noticing are called compression ridges.
Because the planks that make up the soundboard of the
piano are glued in on all sides, when they encounter
humidity and swell slightly, there is no where to go
and you see these compression ridges. Eventually they
dry out and go away. However, if the humidity was
severe enough, those ridges can turn into cracks. It
is not the end of the world if your soundboard cracks,
but I personally believe there is an eventual loss of
tone. Yamaha does put a 10 year warranty on their
pianos.

If you think the compression is severe, wait for
another piano.

Thanks, I will pass this info along to the dealer. One more thing, I
am really struggling between the C1 (5'3") and C2 (5'8") models -
both will fit well in my home - both come with the same Mark Iv
disklavier and there is about a $10,000 price difference. Not being a
player I really cannot hear the difference. Any advice? Thanks!!

Re: [disklavier] Re: Help! Serious Concern re Possible Defect in Yamaha Grands

2006-05-22 by Carol Beigel

In pianos, bigger is usually better. The C2 is a well-built piano. The GC1
is a cheaper version of the C1. Different materials in the case, piano
hammers and the amount of work put into it at the factory. That is why it
is so much cheaper. Try to get a good deal on the C2. Ultimately though,
you should listen to each of these pianos and decide for yourself!

RE: [disklavier]

2006-05-22 by John Hancock

This is for DK technicians such as Carol or others.

I have been told that the pedal sensor on my "vintage" G1 wagon grand only
records full or half pedal.

I have tested this and it appears that the pedal is grey scale and records
minute movements. If I slowly depress the pedal and slowly release it, the
playback is smooth and continuous right from off to full and back again.

So. Is the pedal on my Mk1 grand grey scale or not?

In pianos, bigger is usually better. The C2 is a well-built piano. The GC1
is a cheaper version of the C1. Different materials in the case, piano
hammers and the amount of work put into it at the factory. That is why it
is so much cheaper. Try to get a good deal on the C2. Ultimately though,
you should listen to each of these pianos and decide for yourself!

Re: [disklavier] G or C?

2006-05-22 by Carol Beigel

This is hard to explain; especially since different models are distributed all over the world, and often "newer" versions still have the same model number! The U1 upright is a good example of a piano that has changed many times in different markets over the years, but still carries the model number of U1.
I can only speak for the G, C, and S models I have seen in the United States. Years ago, Yamaha made a G series of grand pianos that were marketed for home use. That means they were engineered and manufactured to a price point not necessarily the best quality. The C series are better pianos and higher priced; called Conservatory models. Then, there is the best they can do, and those are the S series for those who are willing to pay for a fabulous piano. I once saw an A series baby grand that was wonderful, but it was not marketed in the U.S. It's all about price point and what the customer will pay for.
As everything else in the world, piano manufacturers had to compete in a market where people wanted to buy goods for cheap, so they had to come up with pianos that people could buy for cheaper. The only way to do that is to cut corners somewhere. You get what you pay for, but that is hard to explain that to someone on a showroom floor looking at virtually identical grand pianos the same size but the price points are thousands of dollars apart.
I believe the C3 today is similar to the G3 of yesteryear, but there is no cheaper version of that size piano today. The cheaper models are the smaller grands.
The older G series have the same stringing scales in some instances that the C series now uses but other differences in the piano actions. You really cannot generalize and say the old G series are as good as today's C series.
Today's G series make a lot of compromises in the materials used in the case, how long the factory takes to produce them, how nice the piano hammers sound (usually brighter), how well the piano can be tuned and how long a tuning will last, how fast the materials in the piano action will wear out, and how long the regulation of the piano action will last.

Hi,

Whats the equal version to the G3 now and whats the value of a good second hand one?

I guess the C series is better than the G series?

Thanks

In pianos, bigger is usually better. The C2 is a well-built piano. The GC1
is a cheaper version of the C1. Different materials in the case, piano
hammers and the amount of work put into it at the factory. That is why it
is so much cheaper. Try to get a good deal on the C2. Ultimately though,
you should listen to each of these pianos and decide for yourself!

Re: [disklavier] G or C?

2006-05-22 by Morris Smith

Carol, you really need to do more research on these products. You are so far out in left field trying to advise someone that Gs and Cs are similar. They are completely different instruments. I have seen these instruments grow and improve since the 60s, probably before you were born. Do some more research and then advice and consul people, who know absoutely nothing about instruments, in a more educated manner.

Carol Beigel wrote:

There were any DKVs in the 60s?

Chortle. Just for those who were curious the disklavier debuted in
1982, just ahead of the DX-7 synth. I was an early DX-7 adopter,
it sat for years on top of my Rhodes (until the Rhodes died) and then
of late it was an auxilliary midi controller until the DC5A arrived.

Morris,
We all know Carol from her frequent contributions to this forum to be very knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects relating to the Disklavier product line and technology. She spends a significant amount of time answering questions and basically being very helpul to less knowledgeable people who really need and appreciate her help and support. Through all these contributions she's established a lot of credibility with this group.
So who are you and what makes you think you're an expert on this subject? Your note really had no substance or information relating to the subject at hand -- it was just a personal attack on Carol which was totally uncalled for. If you really have a broader knowledge of this subject, share it! That's what this forum is for: exchange of information. Facts and data please - leave the personal insults out.

That is why it
is so much cheaper. ; Try to get a good deal on the C2. Ultimately though,
you should listen to each of these pianos and decide for yourself!

Morris,
We all know Carol from her frequent contributions to this forum to be very knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects relating to the Disklavier product line and technology.

This is hard to explain; especially since different models are distributed all over the world, and often "newer" versions still have the same model number! The U1 upright is a good example of a piano that has changed many times in different markets over the years, but still carries the model number of U1.
I can only speak for the G, C, and S models I have seen in the United States. Years ago, Yamaha made a G series of grand pianos that were marketed for home use. That means they were engineered and manufactured to a price point not necessarily the best quality. The C series are better pianos and higher priced; called Conservatory models. Then, there is the best they can do, and those are the S series for those who are willing to pay for a fabulous piano.I once saw an A series baby grand that was wonderful, but it was not marketed in the U.S.
Today's G series make a lot of compromises in the materials used in the case, how long the factory takes to produce them, how nice the piano hammers sound (usually brighter), how well the piano can be tuned and how long a tuning will last, how fast the materials in the piano action will wear out, and how longthe regulation of the piano action will last.

Hi,
Whats the equal version to the G3now and whatsthe value of a good second hand one?
I guess the C series is better than the G series?

In pianos, bigger is usually better. The C2 is a well-built piano. The GC1
is a cheaper version of the C1. Different materials in the case, piano
hammers and the amount of work put into it at the factory. That is why it
is so much cheaper. Try to get a good deal on the C2. Ultimately though,
you should listen to each of these pianos and decide for yourself!

I agree!

Carol, in the fist place is a lady, and has been very generous sharing
her knowledge with us.

Since English is no my tongue, I can't explain in fluid words why I
was angry after reading Morris, but I can expect more on this from
others.

Re: [disklavier] G or C?

2006-05-22 by Carol Beigel

My thinking that the old G3 is similiar to today's C3 is based on tuning graphs of the stringing scale. The harmonic structure is interchangeable when tuning the piano. Although I probably did not make myself clear, when I compare the oder G series of pianos to today's C series, I am envisioning myself actually tuning them. Both of these stringing scales tune nicely and have no glaring errors.
However, today's G series have some tuning bugs. The GH1B, no longer made, has been corrected by the GC1 in that the octave C4 to C3, B3 to B2 can now be tuned almost beatless and still sound good with the double octaves C4 to C2, and B3 to B1. These tuning compromises also come into play when tuning a GA1 and GP1.
Anyway, when Yamaha started coming out with these newer G series of pianos, The GH1B, GP1, GA1, GC1 I was told that the older G2 and G3 were now the C2 and C3 stringing scales. That is my thinking why older G series are similiar to today's C series; certainly not the newer G series. I thought I made that clear in my previous post.

this group has generally been quite positive and pleasant. i was quite surprised by the outburst, particularly directed at someone who's gone out of her way to help virtually every person without question. emails have a tendancy to be misinterpreted, but perhaps an apology is in order after throwing forth such statements in a public domain.

Hi to all,

I am the one who asked the question G or C? and should be the one who should be affected, if at all, by Carols comments. G,I did not realise that such a simple questionwould turn up t be this....!

I have noproblems with her comments and do not see why anyone else should.

I have been a member of this group for about three years and enjoyed it. She and others like her has provided me with wealth of information over the years. I do go byCarols comments even more than , say a sales person at Yamaha.

So I think I agree with Mr Fraser and an "Apology" is in order to this wonderful person who has spent a lot of her time answering all our "good, bad, important, or not so important " qiestions.

Thanks again and best wishes to Carol and keep up the good work, we are behind you.

Does anyone know where I can get information on the Mk1 dk grand? I'd just
like to find info on the sensors key hammer and pedal. General stuff that
the manual doesn't talk about. It's a 1992 vintage.

I'm in the UK and don't know if there was any difference or if I'll be able
to find any info.

be affected, if at all, by Carols comments. G, I did not realise that such
a simple question would turn up t be this....!

I have no problems with her comments and do not see why anyone else should.

I have been a member of this group for about three years and enjoyed it.
She and others like her has provided me with wealth of information over the
years. I do go by Carols comments even more than , say a sales person at
Yamaha.

So I think I agree with Mr Fraser and an "Apology" is in order to this
wonderful person who has spent a lot of her time answering all our "good,
bad, important, or not so important " qiestions.

Thanks again and best wishes to Carol and keep up the good work, we are
behind you.

Budd

this group has generally been quite positive and pleasant. i was quite
surprised by the outburst, particularly directed at someone who's gone out
of her way to help virtually every person without question. emails have a
tendancy to be misinterpreted, but perhaps an apology is in order after
throwing forth such statements in a public domain.

Thanks for your adviceCarol,

Carol, you really need to do more research on these products. You are so far out in left field trying to advise someone that Gs and Cs are similar. They are completely different instruments. I have seen these instruments grow and improve since the 60s, probably before you were born. Do some more research and then advice and consul people, who know absoutely nothing about instruments, in a more educated manner.

a Late reply!!

Well carol, The great thing that came about from that callous email
from Morris is; 1- You are A Consul and 2-How much the group cares
about you. Keep up the great and generous help!!

many times in different markets over the years, but still carries the
model number of U1.

were marketed for home use. That means they were engineered and
manufactured to a price point not necessarily the best quality. The C
series are better pianos and higher priced; called Conservatory
models. Then, there is the best they can do, and those are the S
series for those who are willing to pay for a fabulous piano. I once
saw an A series baby grand that was wonderful, but it was not marketed
in the U.S. It's all about price point and what the customer will
pay for.

The only way to do that is to cut corners somewhere. You get what you
pay for, but that is hard to explain that to someone on a showroom
floor looking at virtually identical grand pianos the same size but
the price points are thousands of dollars apart.

piano actions. You really cannot generalize and say the old G series
are as good as today's C series.

in the case, how long the factory takes to produce them, how nice the
piano hammers sound (usually brighter), how well the piano can be
tuned and how long a tuning will last, how fast the materials in the
piano action will wear out, and how long the regulation of the piano
action will last.

Re: [disklavier] White DGC1

2006-08-05 by Buddhika Wije

HI,

May be Carol can help me with this question.

I live in Melbourne Australia and hoping to buy Disklavier mark 4 and looking to get t in white. However it is impossible to find one in white and was told by the local agent that Yamaha has to do a special orderfor me and I would have to pay an extra $5000 (Australian $'s) on top of theA$28,000 for the piano which I thought was far over the top. Is it the same in USA? Also if it is more cost effective to order from aUSA dealer, will I have problems in Australia? I realise that I may need a voltage converter. Would I have problems with the warranty and what sort of warranty does the USA buyers get?

Thanks for your help,.

BUDD

I can't go into the economics of the issue, etc... but I can answer the
technical question. A US market
disklavier will work fine in Australia. The power supply is your
typical 120/240V 50/60HZ switcher.
All you need to do is swap out the power cord (again your typical
iec-style computer cord).

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
