Velocity or Volume?...I must stop the pounding! GNMIDI

Velocity or Volume?...I must stop the pounding! GNMIDI

2007-01-16 by yadidisklavier

I know that this has been addressed many times by the group over the
years, but unfortunately, all of the posts have only led to more
confusion for me. Please help me by clarify?

I recently purchased an MX100II Mark II. From previous pianos, I
already understand what happens to hammers from constant pounding.

I recently purchased GNMIDI so I could batch convert midi files and
make them appropriate for the DKV. In the GNMIDI convert volume
function, the software gives two choices (radio buttons), one is
for "volume" and the other is for "velocity". There is a "percentage"
choice as well..this is self explanatory and an I believe I want a
value of 80% or less.

Since I don't want to flat line velocity performance within a song,
should I just be selecting the "volume" option?

Thanks!

I haven't used this tool, but I suspect you want to reduce the
velocities, as this is the individual note loudness. I would expect the
volume control to insert controller 7 messages, which I think will have
the same effect as adjusting the volume control on the piano control
unit (on my MPX1Z Mark II this puts the "soft" pedal down)

Give it a try and see what happens I guess!

Good afternoon, everyone.

If memory serves me correctly, the Mark II does not respond to volume
control (controller 7) messages. It does, of course, respond to note-
on velocity messages.

I think that controller 7 was first implemented in the Mark IIXG.

My Mark II responds to volume with the dampening pedal (far left).
Is this going to have a different effect than velocity message? I'm
afraid this is a whole new can of worms for me.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Velocity or Volume?...I must stop the pounding! GNMIDI

Good evening, everyone.

Regarding the message below from yadidisklavier:

We are talking about 2 completely different volume control issues:

(1) It is true that you can reduce the volume of the piano using the
control unit or the remote control for your Disklavier. Internally,
the instrument reduces the hammer velocities little by little as you
reduce the volume setting. At some point, it engages the left pedal
which moves the hammers closer to the strings thus reducing the
hammer velocities even further.

(2) In my post, I was refering to a MIDI message in the the file
itself called "controller 7" or "volume." The possible value ranges
for this message are 0 to 127. The normal setting for this parameter
is 100 for a Disklavier piano. Early Disklaviers (I think Mark II and
before) paid no attention to this message.

Your instrument is actually a Mark IIXG and it does pay attention to
the controller 7 MIDI message. However, you will not be able to
change the controller 7 value without editing the file itself.

Regrettably, many MIDI files found on the Internet have the
controller 7 value set rather high. In addition, the note-on
velocities may be quite high. The result is that the file is much too
loud when played on the Disklavier.

Does this "loud" controller 7 value characteristic apply to MIDI
files that have been recorded on a Disklavier as well if unaltered by
anyone?

Thanks, John

Parting a Yamaha Disklavier on ebay

2007-01-18 by Buddhika Wije

Dear Terry,

Thanks for your email.

If you let mw know your location or in fact your postcode and the country, I may be able to ask a few shipping companies.

I believe it won't be more than 10kg parcel for all the disklavier electronics. The heavy item is the power supply and the solenoid railing which spans the length of the 88 keys. I believe I may be able to ship it for Australian $150 - 200 max. + I may need to get some wood to make a box to crate the items. I do not know what that will cost, may be A$70 or so. I am guess estimating these figures and I will try and give a couple of calls and find out once I get your location details.

With regard to whether it can be fixed to your piano or not, is something that you have to ask a piano tech. Most techs would say no I guess. I believe if you are handy with your hands you may be able to spend some time on the project. Carol B, on this site is very knowlagable. you can ask her. But most of them are service orientated and will not do one of projectsI guess.

My thinking is that, assuming that all 88 keys at the far end where the plungers hit to drive them are not the same cut as in all grand piano's, you may have to move the solenoids to be directly under the individual keys. With the Yamaha system all the solenoids are pre positioned and the housing is pre made. The solenoids that drive the 88 plungers that hit the opposite end of the keys can not be moved to be aligned. However if you can make your own railing with the housing you might be able to work with it.

If however the keys are the same length and at the same angle as the Yamaha GH1 (from which this comes) then I don\ufffdt think it is such a problem.

If you are interested, and if the item does not get sold, I can try and dismantle solenoid railing and post you an impression of the solenoid holes and the railing. Also can tell you at what distance it is fixed from the front of the piano. With this template you will be able to take your key bed out and see if all the keys at the same distance from the front align up with the current solenoid railing.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your interest.

Okay... To wrap this up:

I think the best thing for me to do is to use GNMIDI and edit/set
BOTH volume and velocity to 80 (or something less than 100).

Thanks for the attention this thread has rec'd!
