Both - Some of the sounds will be sample based. You ll be able to tune up/down etc and have a little control but the underlying waveform is what you get -

Just checked the large picture Daniel posted a couple weeks back and there is a MUTE button there. My guess is you hit MUTE and select one of the 16 buttons
