Heeere's Emax!

Heeere's Emax!

2010-10-05 by dutchbeats

ok i finally got one of these bad boys from the toronto kijiji and i just wanted to know if it's possible ever to use a cf card drive with it(it's a model 1000). the board versions are:

PCU PCB: PC327 Version 2, Revision C

Analog PCB: PC326 Version 3, Revision C (assembly revision b)

Panel PCB: PC319 Version 1, Revision E (assembly revision e)

it doesn't have a working disk drive so i have to get a new one and also there is no lcd screen since he accidentally broke it and then removed it when he replaced all the led lights(i did the research here and know which replacement to get from rs). otherwise it looks mint and i only paid $80!

looks like replacing the lcd might be tricky since i think i'll have to remove the keys and a few other things to get at it. i noticed some weird red contraptions underneath where the lcd must be soldered and was wondering what they are. looks like some sort of clips or something... maybe i don't have to solder just stick the pins in and fasten the clips?(if in fact that's what they are)

no more lurking for me! also glad to finally upgrade from my trusty mirage after 20 years of dedicated use, although i will still use it :)

Rev2 means it can be upgraded to SCSI, if it doesn't have it already (is IC6 by the SCSI connector populated? if not, you would have to get a kit).
Then you could add a CF drive.
You can get a PCD-50b here:
http://psism.com/scsi50band60b.htm

You can get a replacement floppy or change to a slim floppy using a converter PCB....

To replace the LCD, you remove the main logic and then the button panel PCB. You don't have to remove the keys, IIRC.

The "red contraptions" are connectors that the LCD pins pass through.

You don't have to solder that side, but will probably have to solder the pins onto the LCD for a "header".
The LCD display pulls off straight, not to the side or anything like that (ie- they don't clip together)

Regards,
Ted

Yes, sure: the SCSI kit from Ted, combined with the PCD-50B allows The Emax to boot from CF card.
Ted is also selling a small board which allows you to install a "laptop" sized floppy drive on top of the CF drive. Both of them together fit in the original floppy drive hole in the front panel.
I have this set up, but to be honest, I'm not using the floppy drive anymore :-)

It's a gamble, but the group would very much appreciate it if you would do the test :-)
It all depends on the IDE/SCSI adapter board and IDE CF card board they have been using in that device...

Let us know :-) !

Re: Heeere's Emax!

2010-10-05 by dutchbeats

not so sure now!...it appears i might have been hornswoggled. when i turn it on all the lights except for load all and enter stay on as well as the disk drive light. when i put a disk in it makes a faint whirring sound but that's it. is this because there's no lcd and there's a short circuit or something? actually the enter led flashes for a split second the instant the on switch is flipped but otherwise it and load all are the only ones not lit.

i meant to say vfx drive not eps that he had been using. i've tried that one and the mirage and so far only the mirage drive is showing any sign of life.

That doesn't look to be SCSI at all, just IDE.....

Re: Heeere's Emax!

Thanks for the info and looking forward to buying a kit. In regards to the all lights on, is it normal for all the lights to always be on and more importantly, is it possible to use an emax without the lcd. meaning, will it even be able to boot at all or will it freeze with the lights on like it's doing now?

The Emax should boot without a display. It doubt it has any way of telling whether it is connected or not.
That would require additional electronics which have no other use.

Thanks! I will buy a kit and floppy converter as soon as i fix the lcd and also will get that flash drive from psi. IC6 is empty and the boot ROM is 24-pin IP349 and IC49 is IP344. Time to start learning how to solder.

Just curious, I don't mind booting from disk but can it be set to access the os from the flash for the functions? That's the main reason I want a flash drive so that it doesn't keep accessing the floppy while I'm using it.

  Cheers!

Re: Heeere's Emax!

2010-10-06 by dutchbeats

I just answered my question thanks to the emulator archive. In the diagnostics manual on page one it says:

'The bootprom diagnostic tests are invoked each time the emax is powered up....on power up, all led's are lit, as each test is passed, an led is turned off.'

It then lists the different meanings of each light and for the dynamic allocation light it says the unit will lock up if it is unable to initialize the lcd... Back in the clear! :)

Re: [emax] Re: Heeere's Emax!

The acard- perhaps but you would need to convert from 68pin to 50 pin.
The ide cannot say- maybe, maybe not- since it is a laptop IDE it would also need to be converted to plug in to the acard....

Seems kind of kludge-y to me- a total of 4 pieces to make the connection...

would this cf drive
<http://www.addonics.com/products/flash_memory_reader/ad44midecf.asp>
work? also, the acard aec-7720UW model uses ultra wide scsi connection
and is cheaper than the 7720U but will it still work with an emax? i
looked through the data base already and the W version has not been
listed.

all of this just to save 40 dollars by not going to scsiforsamplers! the cf drives there are 'currently' $139 but they also sell an mpc 2000xl cf drive for $69 since it the mpc uses ide already. therefore there is no acard 77xx type connection in it and doesn't cost twice as much, but, he offers an upgrade kit if you have an mpc with the cf drive already you can get this kit and it (if i'm guessing correctly) will contain the acard bridge. for some reason i'm thinking this drive will work with emax with the 'kit'.

but i'd have to pretend i have an mpc that's the only catch...lol

forgot to add that the xl upgrade kit is for if you want to go scsi instead of ide since the ide can only support a certain drive size. so then you get the kit and it has a ide scsi bridge.

do you think the special mcp 2000xl scsi upgrade kit they sell is just an ide to scsi bridge though? it probably costs 70 dollars i'm guessing, bringing the total price back up to the normal cf drive price d'oh!

Re: [emax] Re: Heeere's Emax!

yes but be aware not all ide to scsi works with emax

the scsi cards used in the akai are the idsc 2/r and dont work with emax or ensoniq the 7720u work with emaxes but dont with ensoniqs

the idsc 2/r work with kurzweils with out latency

but the acards and the iscde12 work with kursweils but have a 5 seconds latency will trying to access drives andf folders and samples

do you think the special mcp 2000xl scsi upgrade kit they sell is just an ide to scsi bridge though? it probably costs 70 dollars i'm guessing, bringing the total price back up to the normal cf drive price d'oh!

on the eiii forum esynthesist(hey!) said that the R-IDSC-E/R works with

also what about the yamaha V769970?

but as of yet i have not been able to source a copy

as for the yam it would be easier to find a needle in a hay stack

Re: Heeere's Emax!

Ooops. Be careful, a few weeks ago I connected the SCSIForSamplers drive again to my EIII and did some extensive testing, and to be honest it had problems - the EIII could not (always) save banks to the CF card, neither the OS. This drive uses that old R-IDSC-E/R board; I was going to replace it by the Acard 7720U now.
The drive works fine however on the Emax-II.
It doesn't work on the Emax-I.

...I have the old firmware IOData board, but it doesn't work with the Ensoniq EPS Classic. Unfortunately that was the original reason why I bought the CF Drive - anyway, I'm using it now with other samplers.
I will simply put one of those HxC SD card devices now in my Ensoniq and live with the slow speed compared to the SCSI devices :-)

Thanks to everyone! One last question promise, does the plus os have the se functions in it? Also, can the se os boot with the cf drive or does that require the plus os with the scsi selection feature?

Plus OS is SE + HD support

That is what I normally ship with the SCSI update kits, as I assume you normally would have updated to SE already....

Thanks to everyone! One last question promise, does the plus os have the se functions in it? Also, can the se os boot with the cf drive or does that require the plus os with the scsi selection feature?
