OT firewire vx pcmcia

2004-12-30 by Julie Larson

Hi everyone,
I hope you're all having a great holiday season. I'm looking into a
buying a new audio interface for my powerbook. I need to keep things
fairly portable so I think I've narrowed it down to Motu's 828MKII, and
RME's Hammerfall multiface/cardbus. Is there any advantage to pcmcia
over firewire or vise versa? Thanks for any input.

One issue to consider is that Cardbus is a soon to be obsolete feature on
laptops. PCIe has a cheaper and better alternative so you might find that the
cardbus adapter will not work with new laptops within a year or so. Firewire
might be less solid as an interface but I think it will be around for a long
time as a port on new hardware. RME's Fireface is possibly worth considering if
you were going with that companies products although it is more expensive.

I suspect that the forthcoming obsolescence of both PCI and Cardbus (PC
Card/PCMCIA) goes some way toward explaining the plethora or Firewire
interfaces on the market these days - that and the desirability of connecting
the same audio hardware to desktop and portable systems and the fact that you
don't need to crack open the case and install a hardware card in the case of a
PCI card.

Cardbus RME works really well for me on PC and for lots of Mac users too from
all reports on the RME company forum.

Regards,
Murray

I'm using an 828 MkII with my Powerbook and it has been flawless.
Great routing features and it sounds good also. There are other
options such as the Mobile I/O which sound better but also cost more.
I believe that people have reported good things about the RME solution
as well. Performance has been great for me thus far and the drivers
are stable on OSX.

Fernstudio

I have Hammerfall Cardbus and Fireface

I get better performance out of the Cardbus system (I can run more
complex mixes on it...)

Agreed, I'm running the drives on the cardbus and the performance is
better than running both audio interface and drives on the same bus.

And for the 40 bucks I paid for the PCMCIA Firewire controller it was
really cheap too.

So I would suggest a Firewire audio interface and a Firewire PCMCIA
controller to get another bus.

Cheers
Hans

Hi Gareth,
Thanks a bunch for responding. Are you running your hard drives and
your Fireface on the same bus as Hans suggested? Or, all things being
equal, are you simply getting better performance from pcmcia?

Thanks,
julie

Sorry, you misunderstood. I was suggesting exactly the opposite.

Again:

Buy a FW interface and run it of the internal built-in FW port

Get a cheap $40 PCMCIA FW controller (this is a little card that will
add more FW ports to the PCMCIA) and run the drives there.

If I'm still not clear, please ask again.

Cheers
Hans

Thanks Hans,
I'm sorry. My message was ambiguous. I understand what you're saying.
I'm not sure if I understand what Gareth was saying.

I understood Gareth to say that he was getting better performance with
his PCMCIA cardbus interface than his 800 Fireface interface. I'm
trying to determine if the inferior firewire performance he is
experiencing is caused by running his firewire interface on the same
bus as his hard drives.....or if PCMCIA is just better in his
experience?

I really appreciate all the help.

Julie

Hans is certainly giving good advice - and I purchased a PC card
Firewire Interface so I could get more Firewire busses

However I *still* find that I get better performance out of the
Hammerfall Cardbus Interface

Perhaps the Driver for the Hammerfall is more efficient?

I should add that I am really pushing the capabilities of the system
here - running 48+ tracks and more on my laptop as well as a TC
Powercore and loads of internal processing.

I would like to use the Fireface for this work (more i/o and future
orientated) but I did extensive testing at the start of the 2 LP
mixing projects I am doing right now and could not get the same
performance out of the Fireface as out of my old Hammerfall/CardBus

As always others may report a different experience.

That may very well be, and can only be found out by trying...
sorry... I seem to misunderstand too a lot of the times... :-)

Thanks Murray,
I've been burrowing around on the web trying to find out more about
this....I think I should hold off on a purchase until after MacWorld.
I'm really not sure that firewire is up to what I'm putting through it.
I'd like to hear more though. When you look at the numbers they
really aren't comparable.

julie
