Steinberg does it right

Steinberg does it right

2002-04-23 by Ned Bouhalassa

Having just visited Steinberg's excellent Virtual
Guitarist web site
(http://vg.clubcubase.net/index.asp), I have to
say that they really did a great job of making it
easy for someone to get information after having
purchase the VSTi. I know that most companies
don't have Steinberg's resources, but man, I sure
Emagic would take the time to check out how their
competition is _communicating_ with its clients.
Emagic should at least have a similiar web site
for EXS24, no?

Well...just wait until you enter the Steinberg Tech Support Vortex...and all
these years you thought the Twilight Zone was fiction.

Fair enough, Julie. My point is about Steinberg
setting up a fairly complete site for a new VSTi.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that the company as
a whole should serve as an example to Emagic and
others, just this aspect of the new-product 'game'.

agree, absolutely, even though on my system it eats cpu like
there's no tomorrow - i had half a mind to sample the best
patches in the exs (minimal cpu usage for me) but the 55
squillion megs of sampling kind of put me off!

i wonder if emagic have given any thought to releasing it as a
hardware synth........

Emagic is now coding some of it's plugins for TC Powercore, so there may be
a chance that the ES2 will run off of the card instead of the CPU. I don't
want to get anybody's hopes up under false pretense, but I did read valid
documentation that they are planning compatibility with Logic's more intense
plugins. Wouldn't it be nice if that included the soft instruments? I'd take
that over a hardware synth any day, except on stage in which case I'll take
the ES2 hardware synth--thank you very much. What a beast that thing! -Jer

Mmmmmm... Imagining my computer completely filled with PowerCores... If only
I could just write Bill Gates and convince him to give me .000004% of his
total wealth, and not have to work very hard for the next couple years to
get everything I currently want. :-)

This is definitely getting OT, but with all of the various Gurus that
inhabit this list with access to tons of gear, this is probably the best
place to ask this question: With all of the software synths out there these
days, what types of hardware synths are still worth buying? E.g. what
hardware synths don't have an equal-or-superior software emulation?
Specifically I would like to create very 'alien' sounding sounds. Not harsh
metal-scraping-ear-blistering 'alien' sounds.. nice cute little friendly
alien sounds, e.g. those found in a lot of of Aphex Twin songs. :-)

Re: [exs] (OT) hardware synths

Nord Modular. I use Reaktor a lot, but the Nord is less work to set up
( albeit less flexible, ) and does sounds I can't get w/ Reaktor. It's
the only hardware synth I've hung on to other than my old Korg Prophecy.

Thanks for your suggestion :-) I remember reading about the Nord and Nord
Modular when they were still in their first incarnation, I'll definitely
have to check up on them and see what the latest and greatest version has to
offer.

Oh yes, I am definitely going to get "Atmosphere" ASAP as well :-)

That's cool, I didn't know SoundDiver (or the ES2) could randomly generate
patches, sounds like an awesome feature. I will definitely need a physical
keyboard that has aftertouch in addition to awesome sounds at some point
though, so the SupernovaII and Access VirusKC/Indigo2 all look mightly
tastey. Is it safe to assume that SoundDiver can create random patches for
most synths?

You might consider Spectrasonics "Atmospheres." Soft again, but probably
very appropriate for your needs. I use my outboard Supernova for a lot of
sounds like that. Waldorf outboard synths have nice and soft stuff, but both
include some pretty stalwart and strong lead synths despite their affinity
for the less abrasive. I am a Mac user and use SounDiver to generate random
patches. The Supernova responds very well to this, and many "alien" sounds
are easily, randomly generated. I think the ES2 has a random patch generator
as well built into the interface (I hope I'm not getting my soft synths
confused, but that's what I remember). -Jer

I don't think I'll let go of my Kawai K5000 or my Prophet 5.

I've never heard a softsynth do K5000 textures. Maybe Absynth or Reaktor
might????

As for the Prophet, the soft version (Native instruments) doesn't come
close.

I've still got my ASR10 sampler for 2 reasons. I have a big library which I
guess I'll eventually convert to EXS using Translator for Mac (Is it out
yet?) and the other reason is that the ASR's Effect algorithms are excellent
and nothing else comes close to some of those sounds....

I've still got my Yamaha RM50 mainly because it has good audio to midi
triggers.

You guys beta testers? As far as I can tell, it ain't out yet. If you
did pick up a copy commercially, please let me know where you got it.

(talking about ES2)
> You guys beta testers? As far as I can tell, it ain't out yet. If you

A recent thread on the LUG went like this: Someone said they were shipping,
someone else wrote back and said 'shipping' was too strong a word because
they were not due in stores until (I think) May 1st. Then Markus or Michael
said that EVOC and ES2 *were* shipping for sure, though of course he didn't
specify *where* they were being shipped (e.g. to local German stores only,
or world wide).. So it looks like it should be available pretty soon from
the regular Emgaic distributors.

The people talking about ES2 could be beta testers, or they could be using
version 5.01 or 5.10 of Logic, both of which are not downloadable updates
unfortunately. Most people got 5.00 when they first got the 5.x upgrade, but
a few people did get 5.01 which contains the ES2/EVOC demo (and can be
'activated' once its possible to buy them)... also anyone who bought a Logic
Control was shipped version 5.1 on cd which adds Logic Control support and
'accidentally' fixes a few other problems (that will be fixed in the free
5.2 update everyone can download when it's ready). 5.1 also contains
ES2/EVOC.

No, no, no. You can use the ES2 for free in Logic 5 for around 2.5 months,
which should be enough time to make the purchase by then. EVOC works (and
works quite nicely) for around a month on my machine... Jer

We did a bunch of the stuff in Atmosphere with the K-5000 (and Absynth and
Reactor for that matter)
